What is an unlocked phone? An unlocked phone is a device that is not bound to any carrier or plan. It allows you to choose your phone first and your carrier second. Upon selecting a plan, simply insert the carrier's SIM card into the phone and you're ready to go. If you decide you want to change carriers down the road or want to take an international trip, it's as simple as replacing your existing SIM card with a new SIM and activating your new plan. |
What are the benefits of an unlocked phone?Freedom: Choose the carrier with the best service or price. If you find a better deal later, you have the ability to change to a different carrier. Travel: Take your phone internationally and use the carrier of your choice. It's as easy as inserting an active SIM card. Selection: Choose the phone with the features you want, whether or not your carrier sells it, and get more service options without a contract. |
How do I set up my unlocked phone? The first thing you’ll need is a SIM card for your desired carrier. When activated, the SIM card will let your phone connect to your carrier’s network. If you decide to upgrade to a newer unlocked phone in the future, you can easily remove the SIM card from your old phone and put it in your new phone—just make sure you get the right size of SIM card (nano, micro, or standard) for your phone. If you want to use your phone while traveling internationally, you can easily buy a SIM card for a carrier that operates where you’re traveling. As long as it’s activated, you can just swap SIM cards when you arrive at your destination. |

Build quality is solid, nice weight and battery life is great. I can go a whole day (3 email accounts, black stack, what's app, face book, BlackBerry Messenger, Crack berry etc..) and still have More than enough power left with out needing a charge !
Why I like the LEAP:
- Voice assistant is loads better than the Z10
- Voice assist works when 1/8" plug is in use (like old car stereo)
- good price
- (I have big hands) bigger but slimmer than my Z10 with 3800mA large battery
- battery lasts all day, sometimes I let it go for 36 hours, I almost never plug it in throughout the day
- 10.3.1 is faster than 10.2.1 even though Leap and Z10 share same hardware
- leather/plastic dimple backing is not slippery, aka never slides off pants
- no physical buttons, everything is mostly swipe driven
Gripes on the LEAP:
- keyboard is still great, but would have liked to see something new in 10.3.1
- still getting used to the new icons in 10.3.1
- no WebM support in browser (use AVPlayer for that)
- volume +/- and pause rockers are a little snug, Z10's were much easier
- Amazon app store is not GooglePlay, but you can find APKs of slightly older GoogleMaps and side-load
- starting to navigate when deep in a city, native map struggles to find location, side-loaded googlemaps locates right away
- Voice assist is not Google Now or Siri, but it does the simple things
- I don't use the "notes" or "Remember" app, but people have said it changed pretty radically
My uses:
- Emailing, zipping docs
- Apollo (aka Pandora for Blackberry)
- Music player
- lots of web browsing
- Native maps app
- side-loaded older version of APK google maps as backup
Built Quality - plastic body doesn't give you a premium feeling as those found in iPhone or Samsung's premium phones, but it never feels cheap. It is a solid phone on your hand.
Camera - Simply, it sucks. Initially, I thought it's the stock camera app didn't excel. I purchased another high rated camera app from the Store but frankly the photo quality doesn't improve significantly. It's just not sharp enough. The worst thing is that the camera fails to focus quite often.
Security - this is where this phone excels. Blackberry surely can keep its reputation with OS10. For most apps, you can control what functions to be allowed or denied by the apps, such as camera, mic, files, emails etc. This is not true for Android or Windows phones which only let you know what the apps will have access, but never allow you to individually pick which ones to give access right. Furthermore, if you lose your phone and anyone attempts to enter an incorrect password ten times to unlock your phone, the phone will start wiping its data. Peace of mind assured.
Battery - Non removable, but really good battery life. For me, I can recharge it every two days. I use the phone primarily for checking emails, WhatsApp messages, surfing the Web.
Storage - It has 16 GB, but it also supports up to 128 GB micro SD card. That should be enough for most people for storing documents or multi-media files.
Apps - Very limited. Windows phones have even more apps than Blackberry Store, not to mention iPhone or Android. However, major apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter are available. I personally do not need to use many apps in my phone or play games using my phone. If you need to be entertained by tons of games, then you will be deeply disappointed.
Call quality - really good. This phone has two mics so it can pick up your voice nicely. Its volume is very loud at its max level so it's less likely that you have an issue to hear the other side even you use your phone in a noisy environment.
Blackberry Hub - it's a single point of accessing all your messages, such as emails, text message, notifications from apps etc. so you need not open each app to read or compose messages. However, one thing that annoys me is that you need to actually open the messages or mark them as Read (by tapping on the envelope icon) to get rid of the notification. Otherwise it will always show as new messages arrived.
I hope by listing the pros and cons would help someone who don't have a chance of using this phone, especially those who are curious about Blackberry OS10.
Top reviews from other countries
At the time of writing, the Blackberry Leap is $106.99. At that price, this is a steal. Even if you don't use it as a phone. Just compare it to any of the cheap Android devices available for sale. At a hundred bucks, many of them have terrible screens, useless operating systems, and feel cheap. The Leap has nice build quality, looks good, and runs smooth.
The obvious kicker is the fact that BB10 is a dying operating system. And the app store is basically dead. So this is unfortunate. You can set up your emails, and calendars, browse the web, send text messages, watch video, play music, and so on. But everyday now apps are no longer being supported. Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp... There are work arounds, but it's a pain. If you plan on getting this phone as an actual phone, do not go into it expecting you will be able to use all these things.
Regardless of all that, it's still an amazing value for this phone. I bought it at $118.72, and thought it was a great deal. I don't actually plan on using it. It's just a spare. But even with all the regular features that are no longer usable on an older device like this, it still has a ton of value.
I bought Leap and received it on July 6, 2015. The reason is simple, I need a handheld device with security features to replace my Palm Vx which was died on me recently.
After playing with it for a week, I really like it. Because I do not use it as a phone; I won't give comments.
The reasons I like it are:
1) The way BB OS 10 organizes emails in the Hub. It chooses folders to sync, and sends LED notifications when receives emails. I setup rules in Hotmail to put emails to specific folders before I read them. I was embarrassed when I missed a couple of important emails recently, because Apple's email app and Microsoft email app failed to give me notifications for the emails under 'idle' folders, they also just label the numbers of new emails by the inbox and the active folders. I have to go over folders to ensure I do not miss new emails. So BB OS handles emails very nicely.
2) Another great feature about the email organization is that you can file emails away to folders after reading them.
3) The predicable keyboard. A predicated word shows at the top of the next letter I want to type. The predication can even provide my email addresses. It is very efficient and accurate.
4) The tile design of the home page. I particularly like 'Remember' app and 'Calendar' app. The schedules tasks are clear and simple. Other than that, Kindle app stays where I left with, and be ready for me to continue reading. So far I could have 8 tiles on the home page, I wish I could have more tiles.
5) BB Blend. I could access different email accounts at one place, 4 Hotmail accounts, and one iCloud account. There is no need to log-in and log-off between email accounts.
6) BB link. With this feature, I am able to access to files on a PC. That creates flexibility and possibility. I could read documents, watch videos, and so on.
7) Bedside mode. This is a nice way to save the battery. Again I do not use it as a phone. I use it to organize my emails, tasks, and private memos. I just leave it in the bedside mode. Leap has not consumed much energy in this mode. It is about 2% for overnight.
8) The off-white screen. The color can be changed. The off-white is set and it is better than the cold white on Apple devices and Samsung Galaxy S III.
9) The advanced interaction. I like 'Lift to Wake'. I leave it to the desk, and it wakes up when I pick it up.
10) The lock screen notification. The incoming emails and schedules tasks are listed clear and simple.
