+Low performance impact
+Low false-positives
-Annoying nag messages
I did much research before choosing an antivirus. While I had previously used a free AV that worked great, I was forced to purchase a "name-brand" AV that my workplace approves for their work-from-home VPN. I have used the "big-name" antiviruses, and in my opinion they are garbage. After checking reviews and detection ratings from independent labs, Kaspersky seemed have the best combination of high virus catch rate, low false positive rate, and low performance impact. Personally, after switching from my previous free AV, I have notice no performance impact, which is great.
The reason for the -2 stars? Firstly, windows always pops up an error saying "Your virus definitions are out of date!" and "You have no virus protection!" PLUS Kaspersky pops up a "You are not protected!" when Kaspersky is doing its auto-update process. My old AV didn't trigger this. There is nothing to worry about, but it does sort-of nag you until the update is finished. some of these alerts can be turned off in Windows settings, but in my opinion these shouldn't be triggered in the first place.
Secondly, I made this mistake of downloading the free trial before purchasing the key from Amazon. Boy, does that trial bug the ever-loving heck out of you to buy it! I had the free AV before that popped up a daily "request" to purchase an extended version, and that was tolerable. Kaspersky's messages were constant and intrusive. I had planned to use up the full 30 days of the free trial before inputting the key to get that extra month, but the software nagged so much I couldn't stand it.
Overall, it has good protection and features. However, I will probably try another when the 1-year is up.
I'm a long-time user of AVG Free. Until recently, I've been happy with AVG. But I decided to bite the bullet and try a commercial version after AVG Free had trouble removing a Trojan and also appeared to be a bit of a performance hog. To remove the Trojan using AVG, I even tried booting the computer to an AVG Rescue CD to run a full scan from the rescue environment, to no avail - although AVG detected the Trojan, it could not remove it. I could have contacted AVG Support and paid them $80 to try to remove the virus for me. Instead, out of frustration, I moved on to Kaspersky.
Some initial impressions re AVG vs Kaspersky. I like AVG's UI better, plus it seems to have more granular controls (more features that you can turn on or off) than does Kaspersky. That said, I don't mind the clean (almost minimalist) interface provided by Kaspersky. It's highly intuitive. Also I like Kaspersky's virtual keyboard - great idea and very cool. During the full scan, Kaspersky listed the number of files scanned in addition to an estimate of how much time was left to complete the scan. Great, I thought! AVG never gave me a time estimate. However, as it turned out, Kaspersky's time estimate is not terribly accurate. It initially said it would take one hour to complete the full scan - actually, it took almost 2 hours. Once it reached "99% complete", it said the scan would finish in < 1 minute. Well, an hour later (and an additional 250,000 files scanned), it did finally complete. Yes, minor annoyance, but still annoying. Setting aside these niggling issues (and I bet I'll run into more as I explore Kaspersky), we come to the....
Ultimate Bottom-line - Kaspersky appears able to not only detect Trojans and other viruses, but remove them as well! Sort of what you'd expect from an AV product. Sometimes you do get what you pay for. That said, I may return to AVG at some point, but for now I'm happy with Kaspersky.
