I grew up listening to this album and I even had the "Instant Karma" single months before the album was released. Now that it has been remixed and remastered I can hear things I never heard before. The clarity is amazing, John's voice is up front, the bass and drums 'connect' in a way that wasn't heard on the record albums of my youth and these songs don't have the 'dated' effect, each sounding more fresh and more alive them I've ever heard them before.
Most of the people who purchase this album will be familiar with the songs, but the blessing of this 2 disc version resides in the outtakes and rehearsal versions that perfectly depict how these songs came to be. While the basic structure is clearly there already on most of these tracks, you can still hear how they are being worked out. The decision to place these tracks onto this version is the sort of thing that makes this version 'more special' than just having a new copy of this JL/POB recording from my youth.
This album is definitely John saying "I'm not a Beatle anymore" and it's pretty clear that few, if any, of these songs would have worked as a portion of a Beatles record.
And I'm one of those persons who is glad to have Yoko's involvement. She was there, she knew John intimately, she saw these tracks being recorded and her allowing us back into the vault isn't, IMO, her just squeezing out more money. She's sharing John and I'm glad she did. She is responsible, not only for this release, but also for the tracks that appeared on the Anthology releases, tracks like "Free As A Bird", "Real Love" and the final Beatles record ever, "Now And Then", NONE of which would have seen the light of day without her involvement and I am grateful for that. No one would accuse Olivia or Dhanni Harrison of the same as they deal with George's catalog and I'm not going to do it for Yoko.
One last note to thank RAREWAVES-IMPORTS from the Amazon Marketplace. Their great service, great price and quality packaging are to be commended.
John's voice is at the center of every track and he uses his phenomenal vocal power differently for what each song demands. On "Mother", he nails down the progression of his scarred youth and where he was currently - full of howls of pain. The fiery angst of "Well Well Well" and "I Found Out" showcases John's fuzzy guitar stabs and are key to its punk rock foundation. He sings with the most delicate care in his ballads "Love" and "Hold On John". And, in "God", he really drops the boom on his past and gets a fuller knowledge of himself. It's also the song that John really put his own safety on the line.
"Plastic Ono Band" is amongst the most open music ever recorded and it's the consummation of Lennon's vocal talents. He painted a superb portrait of the inside of his soul, which he could only express through rock music because it had always been the central experience to his life. Sometimes songs that test an artist's sanity are useful for others. My ears have never really left this album. The three bonus cuts on disc one, "Give Peace A Chance", "Cold Turkey" and "Instant Karma" integrates very well. The ultimate mixes sound crystal clear. And it's convenient to have my two personal favorite political pieces from John, the razor-sharp analysis of "Working Class Hero" and "Instant Karma" on the same disc.
The second disc, consisting of outtakes of everything on the first disc, has value too. Even in these run throughs, John's vocals convince me that his singing is practically peerless. The unspliced version of "Working Class Hero" is from his "Anthology" box set with that delightful crack in his voice towards the end. It's as great as the original. And, I just might prefer this version of "Cold Turkey". Experimentation perfected.
