Product Description

Jack's Gritty Mix for succulents, cacti, and Bonsai

Jacks gritty mix ingredients

Jacks gritty mix intended use

Jacks gritty mix instructions

Jacks gritty mix features

Ingredients

1 part each. Bonsai Block(1/4 inch ball clay), Monto Clay(1/4 inch montmorillonite clay), and Pine Coir(unscreened pine bark ranging from dust to 3/8ths inch). Zero additives or dyes.

Intended Use

Gritty mix is a good fit for the most of the 30 thousand species of succulents and cacti that exist. Gritty mix is not a good fit for standard houseplants, Thanksgiving cactus, Christmas cactus, Ponytail palm, snake plant and some vine type(string of xxx) succulents in most zones.

Instructions

Remove as much of the old potting soil without damaging the roots. Position the plant with one hand. Pour soil around and into the container to set it. Water well the first time then when completely dry. Slip-potting is acceptable if the old soil is also a gritty mix. Fines are important and should not be removed.

Features

Ultra-fast draining. Bag sizes range from 2 quarts to 24 gallons. Every batch is washed with several hundred gallons of water. Color may vary slightly due to natural variations.

Trusted By Serious Bonsai Artists Since 2008

As a passionate succulent and cactus enthusiast, Bonsai Jack Succulent and Cactus Soil - Gritty Mix #111 has become my go-to choice for providing my plants with the best possible growing environment.

The first thing that stands out is the fast-draining nature of this soil mix. It ensures that excess water quickly passes through the soil, preventing the risk of root rot and maintaining optimal moisture levels for my plants.

The composition of the Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix #111 is a standout feature. It consists of the perfect blend of components, including grit and pumice, which mimic the natural soil conditions found in arid regions, making it ideal for succulents and cacti.

One significant advantage of this soil mix is its ability to fight root rot effectively. The fast-draining properties prevent waterlogged conditions that can be detrimental to the health of succulent and cactus roots.

The optimized pH level of the Bonsai Jack Gritty Mix is another highlight. It ensures that the soil provides the right balance of nutrients for my plants, promoting healthy growth and vibrant colors.

In conclusion, Bonsai Jack Succulent and Cactus Soil - Gritty Mix #111 is more than just soil; it's the key to thriving succulents and cacti in my collection. With its fast-draining properties, perfect composition, root rot prevention, and optimized pH level, this soil mix has become an essential component of my plant care routine. I have been try so many different medias for my house plants, most of them are succulents. Finally I found that this is the best . I mix with potting soil, perlite and succulent soil to repotting, and planting new plants. So far I see all plants I use this media seems doing well. Now I am in mission to repotting all the plants with this mix as spring is here. I already got 3rd orders, 2 gallon size. With 2 gallon size, I can not complain the cost.

I saw this particular soil blend mentioned on a blog about succulent care and best ways to grow them. I'd been having some trouble with new succulents I'd had shipped to the *very cold* Northeastern US and kept losing them to drafts and lack of sunlight (despite using a grow light and keeping them away from drafty windows). So I looked into a better soil and decided that despite the very high price for such a small bag...it was worth a shot.

We got about 17 new succulents and a few Cacti to plant all in different styles and sizes of planters....some in groups, some by themselves from a new seller on Amazon and didn't want to risk losing all of our plants again by using the "branded", cheaper succulent soil we'd tried the first time. The only problem was that 2 Quarts of this soil wasn't quite enough, so we used gravel on the bottom of the very large/deep pots....then a tiny bit of the *old* branded soil that we thought had contributed to our troubles with the last succulents (just to fill in) and then used this entire bag of the Bonsai Jack soil as the primary on all of them. The bag was empty after planting 17 succulents and cacti....but we feel it was worth it because our succulents are still thriving a few weeks later. We ARE using 2 grow lights now and are watering more frequently because the Bonsai Jack soil isn't clumpy or dense like branded types are. It doesn't have the dreaded "peat" blends and is basically like a fine, dry mulch.

We are finding that this "mulch" style is much better for our succulents, but since it allows much faster and more efficient drainage....we are also finding we need to really keep an eye on the plants for limp pieces because we water in smaller amounts at a time, but more frequently with this soil. We water 2 times per week minimum using this, but we're talking a few squeezes of a water bottle....not "spraying" or saturating them. Overall, I'd say if your plants aren't growing well/are suffering....get this! It really helped us keep all 17 plants (so far) without losing one when we'd previously lost 4 out of 4.

But I cannot give 5 stars because the price seems pretty outrageous to me. I understand this is hand-blended and contains no fillers....but it's not like it's treated with some sort of expensive hormone or magic dust. It's still just soil. I'd purchase again, but only in an "emergency" mostly due to the pricing. And would recommend that if you *can* perhaps line the bottoms of larger pots with the cheaper stuff and some gravel and then use this for the main level. Even a coupon on occasion to "stock up" would be great. Overall, this is top notch stuff, though so if you want the "good stuff" you have to open up your wallet!

My order was exactly as pictured. I do not have a green thumb and have killed probably 8 plants in the last year. I finally realized my problem was the soil. I was using Miracle grow potting soil and it would cause water to stay in the soil FOREVER. I finally bought this and mixed it into the soil and now every single one of my plants is thriving. I have an english ivy, pink polka dot, and several snake plants that are all growing babies. I'm super happy with this product and will purchase again.

This soil is perfect for succulents and bonsai, great drainage, even mix of particulates, and easy to look at. Its unfortunately quite expensive (At the end of the day, its a bag of soil...). That said, I will either be purchasing this again in the future or trying my hand at making my own soil.

I’ve had it for maybe two months now- from reading the reviews I thought it would be a much smaller bag (everyone’s biggest complaint) but it wasn’t as tiny as I thought originally. I have about 7 succulents and I mix the bonsai mix with cactus soil and I still have half the bag left! Just make sure you mix it with the cactus soil so it will last longer too- so far it’s working great for me !
I’m sure if I used the mix straight up and had huge pots for my succulents then it wouldn’t go very far.

To all the new succulent enthusiasts (just like me), you will never overwater your succulents again. You will need a pot with drainage hole tho. So far all my succulents are growing new roots and so healthy. The only thing is that you have to water more often than soil mix. The product is a bit pricey but worth every penny.
I highly recommended this product.
