Take some time to get the right boxes clicked while installing, and then you'll be enjoying this modem
I have to admit that it took me awhile to get things right, but with a few dozen attempts, I got everything set properly for my AT&T ADSL internet connection.Once everything was set properly and we were online, the number of errors received while uploading files to the cloud went from numerous (old modem) to practically none (new Netgear one). This was really nice, since every time an error occurred, the file would start uploading from scratch again. That annoyance is now a thing of the past. One of the mistakes I made while setting it up was failing to set the modem to its bridge mode since we are using it with an external wi-fi router. Once set to the bridge mode, things all fell quickly into place.Although there was a short period that I thought it was never going to happen with this modem, once I got all the right boxes clicked--- it's a wonder. In sum, we are very happy to have this as our new family modem. Fast and low error rate. My advice: simply get through the installation steps, and then enjoy it!

Works, is fast, is low cost and small.

I had quite an ordeal getting the thing to work, but you can thank my DSL Internet provider CenturyLink for that. I read many reviews and took notes and tried to prepare for setting this up. Yes, I was sweating.

Of course, it didn't work. I just couldn't get the internet even after a good two plus hours of trying. Then I used the old router (From CenturyLink that I am paying $10 a month for) and went online for some looks around. I saw a firmware update on Netgear's website and installed it. Still no internet though, and another another hour of frustration. However, this new firmware displayed more messages and all, including a message that I had the wrong PPPoE name and password. The old firmware never gave that message. I, of course, didn't believe it and tried again and again.

Then, I went back to CenturyLink and did a chat session and got the PPPoE name and password again. AND IT WAS DIFFERENT!!! I very carefully wrote the original down and it was unusual in that the name had a "@quest.net" suffix. This time around, the name was the same except no suffix. the password was the same too, "password123". (okay, just kidding about the password) But it was the same as before.

I just knew it would work now, but after setting back up the Netgear modem, it didn't do anything. It was bricked. I tried over and over, power up and down a few times. Then, I used my trusty safety pin and reset the modem. (I did it several times before getting the proper name and, of course, it didn't help) Well, after a reset, and entering the right name and password, it said the Internet was up! But, of course, my computer didn't load anything. Just before jumping out of the window, I restarted my computer. . . .

All smooth sailing now. Everything works. If I had the right PPPoE name up front, I probably would have been up in under a half hour. Instead, on and off, it took most of the day.

I purchased this modem in the hope that it would solve the problem with my current modem/router losing the signal on an almost daily, sometimes multiple times a day, basis. The produce arrived, and although it was labeled as a new unit, the package was missing the phone line filter.

But I had read the reviews about problems getting it to connect, in particular with CenturyLink DSL, and had decided I would take a chance, prepared with the PPOE login credentials that I received from Centurylink. The modem came, I connected it and the Netgear Genie popped up, despite fact that there was no internet signal, and begin the setup process. I chose to allow the Netgear Genie do the automatic setup, finding the credentials it needed. I repeatedly received an error stating that the DSL cable was not connected or not connected properly. After over 15 attempts (no exaggeration) using this setup method, I gave up. I then used the manual setup option. I entered the PPOE credentials, again at least 10 times. most of the time I still had no indication that the modem was connected to the service. On a couple of occasions, the internet light turned green, but I had no internet connection. I called Centurylink to confirm that the unit was connected to my service, which they did. Then they advised me to contact Netgear to address the connectivity problem.

The first time I called Netgear, they informed me that because the internet light was not on, I had to call my service provider to fix that issue. Even after I had explained that at one point the modem showed the line was connected and active, and CenturyLink confirmed this (CenturyLink also stated that there were errors showing in the line as well) they persisted in telling me to contact my service provider. I did and confirmed the login credentials (which were the same as before). I tried again to set up the modem after resetting it. No connection... and again... no connection. After about 3 more attempts I had a green internet light. I called Netgear to then see if I could get them to walk me through finding out why the internet wasn't actually working. After almost an hour of resetting and powering off and entering and re-entering the PPOE login information, it still didn't work. Even worse, the Netgear customer service person told me that it was clear it wasn't the Netgear modem that was the problem. Yet I had explained to her (at least 3 times) that when I plugged the DSL cable into my Actiontec modem/router, my internet connectivity was restored. She again stated that it was clear that it wasn't the Netgear modem that was the problem. I made it clear that she had no understanding of the issue.

So, after 4 days of spending hours trying to get this item to work, it's time to send it back for a refund. I gave it my best effort and repeatedly, it failed to work.

We purchased this to replace our Century Link modem that was turning on and off itself all the time. We have High Speed DSL through Century Link. This modem worked great. I did have to call them and get a user name and password to set up the modem. This username and password is not something associated with any of my other sign ons or something needed anywhere other than for modem setup. The customer service was happy to provide it and setup up was easy. I do have a separate router (which is necessary if you want to connect multiple devices to the internet with this modem) so I set this up in bridge mode using the instructions provided. This modem is working great and solved the problem of my internet turning on and off all the time.

As I have many, many Netgear products, it is safe to say that I am a firm believer in the quality of Netgear products. This DSL Modem is no exception. Very easy to follow the 4-step Quick Start install instructions. I live in Canada and the drop-down menu in step 1 included my ISP provider - all bases covered. It has provided flawless performance ever since, being connected to a Netgear Orbi mesh-network router and satellite.
