I programmed the remote in about 10 minutes. My TV is an Insignia with Roku built-in and luckily there was a predefined code for that set-up. For my sound bar, I used the "learning" mode and was able to get that set-up in just a couple of minutes by using the remote for the sound bar.
I then tested it out. The sound bar functionality worked perfectly. The Roku TV setup worked fine except the power button didn't turn the TV off & on and the "A" button didn't go to Amazon Prime. No problem. For TV power, I just went into manual mode and set it up by using the Roku remote. For the "A" button, I manually set it up by following the instructions on how to customize the "app" buttons. Very easy, worked like a charm.
This remote is a big improvement over the Roku remote. It's still pretty small but much more comfortable in my hand than the Roku device. The buttons have a good feel to them and are laid out well.
Not sure what is causing the negative reviews because it worked perfectly for me. I highly recommend it. I'll update this review if I run into any significant problems down the line with the device.
Basically, there are 24 buttons that you can program to learn any IR device. The learning process is simplicity itself, as long as you have the original remotes. In my case, I taught the TV power, input and channel up/down buttons in order to view OTA NFL games. I kept the Roku presets, and then taught buttons for blu-ray play transport, pre-amp volume, and streamer play/pause. It performs the required functions flawlessly.
The remote has a good size form factor, and intelligent button layout. The required 4 AAA batteries (not included) give the remote a nice heft, and the buttons give a satisfactory click when depressed. My only niggle is with the ergonomics - the volume control buttons are set a little too low, so they aren't directly under my thumb when I palm the unit.
I have some concern as to how the back light affects battery life, and have only had the remote for a few days, so I can't speak to device longevity.
All in all, a compact, attractive and functional solution if you have limited needs, and don't mind taking a bit of time for set up.
Edit: Just changed the batteries, so I got about seven months of fairly heavy use. Good job.
Great remote! Worth the money! For us controls a Roku, Sony and JBL.
Everything works beautifully, with one manageable exception. The play/pause button functions only as a play button (read on for why... this may not apply to you).
Here's what I did and the results:
I started with my TV and my original working remote that came with the TV. Through this entire process, I never had to hunt down anything in my TV's settings area. It was all pressing buttons on the two remotes.
First I followed the instruction's "simpleset" instructions. These instructions are an attempt to set all the buttons on the remote, together in one action, to the needs of your tv. I held down the TV Power button + Back button until the ring blinked yellow twice. Then I held down the Power button (for LG). You're supposed to hold down power until it works. The remote has a long list of possible LG configurations, and every three seconds it tries a different one until one works and it turns the TV off. Each time it tries one, the ring blinked red (I think, my memory may be vague there). Mine worked on the second code it worked, so the TV turned off and I didn't have to hold down the power button for long. However, when I then tested the remote, only the power, volume, and channel buttons were working. Nothing else worked, which would have made the remote useless to me.
To get the other buttons programmed, I headed to the section of the instructions called "Learning". I pointed my two remotes at each other and followed the instructions. It didn't seem to work at first because I'd skimmed the instructions and did it wrong .. more times than I'd like to admit. I won't repeat all the instruction here, but you press some buttons to begin learning mode, then for each button you need to program you press that button on your remote, then press the equivalent on your old remote, and the new remote blinks green. When you're all done, you have to hold down the TV power button to save. If you don't do that, it won't save the new knowledge and will forget everything.
My play/pause button
My old remote has a play button and a separate pause button. If you have an LG TV, that seems to be the standard remote. This new remote though has a single play/pause button. That means that I couldn't use learning mode to teach my new play/pause button to be an actual play/pause button. So, I taught it to just mimic my old play button.
On Netflix, that works fine -- if something is playing and I press play, it will pause (smart, Netflix!). On Prime, hower, if something is playing and I press the play button, it doesn't do anything. How're, the OK button will pause a playing video.
So, some workarounds are required for the play/pause issue. But otherwise super pleased to have a simpler remote!

Not so with this remote! It’s super solid, easy to set up, feels high quality in every way. Plus, as a bonus, since the 4 batteries are 2 serial/2 parallel, if you’ve only got 2 batteries, you can still use it haha
10/10 highly recommend.
