i've had my ipod for several years now. Recently it started acting up and only playing sound from the left side speakers of whatever device it was plugged into. After using a butter knife and a screwdriver to get the back plate off (the most difficult step in the process), it was fairly simple to disconnect the two wires holding the battery and the jack/hold switch bits on. Other than dealing with the absolutely minute screws that hold this component in place, it was incredibly simple to replace. Now, after about fifteen minutes of work, my ipod plays like new.

As an aside, be aware that some sellers for this item are located at very different parts of the globe. I almost bought from a seller in hong kong, with a delivery estimate of 2 weeks. Instead I bought from a closer seller and had the part in 2 days with the 3-5 day shipping option.

The old headphone jack on my 160GB iPod Classic (not sure which generation) stopped working properly, so I decided to try to fix it to avoid buying a new iPod. I followed the guide "iPod Classic Headphone Jack & Hold Switch Replacement" on ifixit, and needed some thin prying tools and a very tiny Phillips head screwdriver. I have very little experience fixing electronics, but was able to install the new headphone jack without too much trouble. The most difficult parts were separating the front and back of the iPod and inserting the new headphone jack ribbon properly. Just takes some patience and a careful hand. My iPod now works just as it did before.

I mean, it works... problem is that the hold switch's plastic switch piece either broke off or wasn't long enough to extend into the actual switch, so the unit doesn't actually put the unit on hold at all.

BUT, the headphone piece works and the clicker sound works too and that's really why I bought it. OK, I bought it mainly because while installing a new drive in the unit, I didn't hold onto both halves well enough and the ribbon cable snapped on the original..... But it seems to work well enough to where I can play music from it... so that's a good thing. Better than waiting for an eBay seller to send it from China or to have to wait for it to get here 5 days later.... it's convenient, but what I'd probably do is to order them from eBay and keep them on-hand since you'll end up needing them in a pinch and waiting for delivery hurts. :) I ordered drive cables, clickwheels at about 3x at a time now.... this one I didn't have in stock so I had to order it from Amazon.

Anyway... not 100% great and I bet I could fix the hold switch if I had to with some plastic and Krazy glue, but if yours is showing as "locked" when you get it, look for a little blue toggle in there at the top of it and just slide it to the left.. you'll be good then. A screwdriver can hit it pretty easily.

So, I live under my iPod... it is my pacemaker and joy. Thus, I was so sad when, while listening with headphones, the headphone jack was bent and left me with sound only to the L side of my headphones and car speakers (which also uses the headphone jack port). I did my research and read how difficult accessing the innards could be... but, what the heck. I bought a set of micro-screwdriver tips and a set of plastic opening tools. Then I tried... YIKES, they aren't kidding - it is tough to break into this thing! But I am tenacious and kept at it... found that razor blades with the safety edge and the plastic spudgers worked best for me. Alrighty - I am in! Carefully dismantled the parts, removed my headphone jack assembly and placed new one. I really wanted to test everything before putting the back on (because if I had to crack into the case again, I would probably cry!). Oh, well, life is series of tests and experiments, right? Well, flibbety gibbet and fudge! Now I only have sound on the R side.... HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!

This was a great find. My audio jack was broken on my iphone classic 160 GB and this fit perfectly. I didn't install myself but paid a professional to do it. Just makes sure that you have the "thin" version of the 160 GB ipod. Mine was the late 2009 model, you can check your specific model on Apple's website by using the serial number finder . I don't think this will work for the "thick" model but I can attest it worked perfectly for mine. Thanks!

Not enough information. There are two different sizes of Ipod classic, thick and thin, this was the wrong one.
