    Get's Fast Internet Speeds
I replaced my previous Netgear, since it was only designed to get certain speeds. I plugged this in and got the advertised speed. The only negatives are that it does not have a separate internet port & plug weight. All ports are grouped together with the same color. The power adapter is a little heavier and actually fell out of the wall socket first time.I was able to get up and running in minutes and liked that the WiFi settings came pre-configured. Still a lot to learn and leverage from the new Netgear features.I recommend this Cable Modem router for those that are looking to get 500mps + internet speeds.Note: If your speed goes down from 500+ to less than 100 mps, do a factory restore. I noticed that turning on blocking domains reduces the speed a lot. I used speedtest and got 550 mps (depending on load). The fix for this is to turn off the block sites. Potentially another fix would be to get a new firmware, but that might be controlled by your ISP.Search for: When “Block Sites” set to “Always” or “Per Schedule” , internet speed drops about 70%.

I’m very happy with my NETGEAR Nighthawk. It’s a vast improvement over my former modem/wifi router. I get a nice signal throughout my house. My download speeds did improve quite a bit, though my upload speeds stayed the same. I’ve only had it for a week, but so far it’s seems to be a great product. Its setup was also fairly simple using the associated app. The only thing I found frustrating was that I had to log into the website of my internet provider and manually update IP address because. The app just kept telling me that it was set up and then I would get an error message that modem could not be connected. It took me about 20 minutes of troubleshooting to figure it out. Once it was up and running it’s worked flawlessly.

    Style: 800Mbps, DOCSIS 3.0Verified Purchase
The main reason why I upgraded to this modem/router combination is because of the higher bandwidth throughput on this hardware vs. my old stuff. Recently I upgraded to a higher data tier through my ISP (Comcast Cable) to the 200+mbps plan. Even though my old router and cable modem setup was awesome and supported DOCSIS 3.0, I was limited in data throughput capabilities compared to the new data connection I was going to be receiving. A quick lookup on my old equipment verified what the limitations were. As a result, for some time I was operating at an actual much lower bandwidth with my new plan simply because my old equipment was bottle necking. This had to change! And it changed DRASTICALLY after I upgraded to this device.

In order to really optimize the speed from this device you would need to have a data plan in excess of 120mbps. Otherwise there is no point in spending this kind of money. However, with that in mind, there is a secondary concern you should be aware of: the speed of your wireless device. If you plan to get insane wireless speeds, your wireless solution must be able to support better wireless standards such as the "n" standard and the "ac" standard. Additionally, you can enable both the 5ghz spectrum AND the 2.5ghz spectrum on this modem simultaneously. Each spectrum also operates on it's own SSID. So I added the "5ghz" tag to the end of the name of my 5ghz spectrum SSID to differentiate it from the standard 2.5ghz spectrum SSID. This allows me to identify that network so I can connect supported devices to that one, which will allow those devices to run at a faster wireless speed. If you have devices that support both spectrums, both SSIDs will show up on their network configuration tool so that's why it's important to label each spectrum uniquely to differentiate it. Some devices support 5ghz, some do not, but take advantage of it if you can with this modem. As an example, I have a Windows Surface Book laptop that supports higher wireless speeds and the 5ghz broadcast spectrum. With my new data plan I can download at close to 8MB/s. Downloading 10GB worth of data can take me less than 20 minutes at times. Love it. And that's not even on a wired connection!!

Both functions in a single device: finally! A modem and router combination. Even though most cable modems are dumb pass through boxes, the router side of things is a necessary, but additional, expense and can take up more room on a shelf/table/desk where your primary internet is hooked up. That's why condensing both into one device is a great idea from an expense point of view and a physical space requirement one.

This modem features a decent set of advanced networking functions. I am not a huge fan of the network interface tools on this box, but they are okay. Nothing to write home about. Typically don't have to do any port forwarding as much anymore or setting up static LAN IP's, etc. etc. because I'm not much into that side of things these days. I let DHCP handle it, for the most part, and I don't need to run DMZ to make any of my gaming boxes function properly in multiplayer on my LAN. Although, you CAN set up DMZ if you want the best performance.

This is also a good modem for people who just want plug-and-play. You don't even need to mess with the onboard controls if you can't be bothered with that type of stuff, because there is a remote activation feature available through many cable providers including my ISP (Comcast) that takes care of activation on the device. It's pretty easy and painless. You can even do it wirelessly on your laptop, no need to plug into the device! Simply open up a browser page once the device is full powered on and booted up, connect to the default network that it spits out, and load up a webpage. You will then be prompted to go through the activation process. However, I still recommend calling your ISP if you have any difficulties. Sometimes there may be some back-end work that they will have to do in order to get your signal to come through. Personally, I did not have to call, but you may.

Overall, I am incredibly happy with this new modem. It has a nice look to it, there is less clutter because I am having to use less devices to accomplish the same goal AND it's a super fast solution for those higher tier data plans. With 24 wireless channels available for use, I doubt you will ever need more if you plan to use this for residential purposes only. Could not ask for anything more!

12/11/2017 Update: Still getting the run around from NetGear. Have found numerous reviews indicating that there is a design/manufacturing defect that is wholely NetGears responsibility. DO NOT BUY!!!

11/17/2017 Update: Still not working. After insisting that the voltage on the cable was the problem, Comcast added an amplifier/repeater to reduce the voltage. Now they are saying that they might not be able to do anything.

    Update 3/23/2017:
After almost a month, and endless hours with NetGear customer support, I still go thru the same thing almost every morning: Everything is fine initially, then, about 30 minutes later, some sites (always the same ones) are no longer reachable. If I wait, after about another 30 minutes, the connections are restored. If I don't wait, and reboot, I also get the connections back. However, this still takes 15 minutes or so. After the reconnect, everything is fine for the rest of the day, unless I go out for a few hours; so a configuration, wiring or hardware problem is unlikely. It seems that inactivity causes the connection with a specific set of unrelated sites (possibly those using IPv6) to be dropped.

I got NetGear's approval to exchange the device, but the only free way to do that was to send the unit first, at my expense!!! And they didn't extend the warranty for the missed time!!!

Amazon technical support tried hard, but I think the problem is outside their ability to address.

One of the other reviews indicated that firmware should be at 2.xx. I'm at 1.xx. Now I have Comcast coming to do a firmware update. (Strangely, they were able to do that remotely with my older equipment.) I should not have to have discovered that for myself. Didn't NetGear know? Why were they hiding it???

Even if this resolves the situation, poor quality control, unhelpful and time wasting customer service, and a failure to admit a problem puts NetGear on my bad list, since they never mentioned firmware. This is from a customer who owns a half dozen NetGear products.

What follows was written in the first 24 hours, which I withdraw, but leave for the benefit of readers.

I replaced a NetGear WNR3500 router and an Motorola SB6210 cable modem with this single device, the AC1900. The replaced devices are about 10 years old, and while still fully functional, they are slower, less secure, and offer fewer features than current equipment. Here's what I found, compared to my previous setup.

    - Installation was fairly easy. Do follow the quick start guide.
    - Changing settings on the AC1900 does not require a full restart, as it does the WNR3500. Settings changes take place nearly instantaneously This is helpful, especially during initial setup where it might take a few iterations of changes to get things just right.
    - Restarting is rarely needed, apparently; it's a bit early to tell. That is a good thing, since it seems to take about 20 minutes. It looks like it has to renegotiate with the cable company every time the power drops. At the wrong time that could be VERY inconvenient.
    - The really noticeable improvement appeared on streaming services; the new responsiveness is lightningly fast.
    - In addition to DOCSIS 3.0, the AC1900 supports iPv6, a more secure protocol with many, many more IP addresses. (Did you know that we are running out of internet addresses??)
    - I saved shelf space, a electrical plug, a power cable, and a ethernet cable by replacing two boxes with one that performs the function of both.
    - You can set up a separate, isolated guest Wi-Fi hotspot for guests. This would be ideal for a small business.
    - There isn't a good explanation of ReadyShare, so I plugged a thumb-drive into the USB port, and, voila, I was able to access the drive from a computer on the LAN. Someday, I might try a multi-port USB adapter.....
    - One phone app seemed to not like my password all of a sudden; the same password worked fine on the web. I'm still working on that.
    - I would have thought that they would have combined the access control list with the attached devices list on the configuration pages, by now. They have almost the same information.

Granted, the replaced equipment was so old and slow that any upgrade to current equipment would have produced similarly excellent results. If your are in a similar position, with old equipment, I would recommend an upgrade, if not to this, to anything current.

2017/05/15: After almost 3 months and a replacement, I still have to reboot it almost every day, and NetGear has no solution.

Had a large cable company's modem for decades. Cutting back on expenses so investigated wifi routers to stop paying the monthly rental fees. This took a bit to set up, but after a bit, and I think I had to google the instructions, I figured it out. I think it was confusing because I still had the cable company's wifi names floating around, plus there is a regular netgear wifi, then a 5g netgear option. So I learned a lot about what device needs what speed, ect. It's been about 2 years and the router is still working, I think I bought this used too. The app takes me a second to remember how to navigate it. But, as long as the wifi works, and the whole, un plug to reset also works, I don't need to get in the app hardly ever.
