We sometimes forget how good a lyricist, arranger and musician Billy Joel is. I am backfilling my collection of his releases and revisiting 52nd Street reminds me of the above mentioned qualities. It also takes me back to the days when this was first released. And what days!

Big Shot; Honesty; Zanzibar; Rosalinda's Eyes; Until The Night? Wow! And don't forget My Life; Stiletto; Half A Mile Away and the title track, 52nd Street. just super music that I think holds up well over time.

The material is well known. Billy is great. The sound itself is better than the original cd issues. It sounds like they went back to the tapes. It's an engaging listen. It has a feel of the Columbia studio where he and his great band recorded it. I recommend this and the other rock Mastersound cds like Chicago and Bob Dylan. They sound very organic. Not at all brickwalled but louder than original 80s Columbia Sony cds.

I first came across this album on vinyl when I was a kid; still many years after its first press date and well after Billy Joel had released greatest hits 1 & 2 as a double album. I came across it at a garage sale, and thought it would be a good addition to my slowly growing collection of memorabilia.

It was some time before I found what was (and still is) known as a 'record player.' I put this on thinking that because I had the 'greatest hits' and one or two other releases from Joel, I had no surprises coming.

...I was wrong. As is the case with most of Joel's albums outside the greatest hits compilations, there is so much on this record (CD, Tape, whatever format you buy or have) that slips under the radar. Once a person gets past the first three songs that are well known (big shot, honesty, and my life), Joel uncovers something of a rawness and less polished genre that is almost a completely different Joel both musically and in word. Zanzibar speaks of a struggling musician that when considered perhaps lacks the ability to go too much further than he already has gone, but with it comes an acceptance and a certain comfort. This sets the tone for the rest of the album, with Joel singing about this egde on which he lives socially, financially, and vocationally.

How songs such as 'Stilleto' and 'Until the night' vanished from Joel's later catalogue is beyond me. I believe they are better songs than classics like 'uptown girl' and 'the longest time', which I find myself invariably skipping whenever they arrive on a playlist. 'Rosalinda's eyes' and 'half a mile away' sing about an escapism that has more power and sway over the listener than much of Joel's more charted hits.

When considered, this album receives very little kudos as a valid contribution to Joel's career. It is almost an alternative release, especially if the three openers are removed, which is not a stretch to suggest as they appear to come from a completely different place and perhaps from a fiscal point of view needed to be on the album to satisfy those who wish to make money. For my money however, it is albums like this 52nd Street that make Joel such a treasure to listen to. I put this album on, as well as releases such as 'the nylon curtain', 'innocent man', 'songs in the attic', 'the bridge' and 'storm front' well before I would put on any hits compilation. It's the songs that don't appear on these compilations that are the heart of Joel in my opinion, and that's what I seek in an artist - not how they made their money, but how they struggled as an artist before making their money.

I said in my title, all that glitters isn't gold. That is reference to the more popular songs on this particular album. Hits? Sure. Great songs? Definitely. Do they shine brighter than the rest of the album? No way.

This is a great album and the cd works great! I listened through it and no skip’s whatsoever. I docked a star because I bought it new and the case came cracked! I didn’t dock too many stars for that because I bought it for the CD, not the case. Just a little disappointing seeing as I paid full price.

"52nd Street" has a wonderful blend of pop and jazz - which should be saying something because I am not a big fan of jazz. Billy Joel is one of the best recording artists of all-time. He can write any genre of music. He can make jazz sound accessible which is not an easy thing to do. Not every song has a jazzy feel like "My Life", "Half A Mile Away", and "Big Shot". I would call these songs pop/rock songs. "Until the Night" reminds me of a Righteous Brothers song. One of the most gorgeous and underrated ballads he's ever written. The song gives me chills. My only gripe with this album is the title track. Sounds more like an interlude than a song. It's a good track for what it is, but way too short. "Rosalinda's Eyes" is supposedly about Billy's mother. It's a beautiful and heartfelt track. The chorus is full of emotion. "Stiletto" is my personal favorite. Starts off jazzy (awesome saxophone) and turns into a rock/pop powerhouse. There's also an impressive piano riff throughout the song which is highly addicting. Pure sexiness. The most jazzy track is "Zanzibar". It's got a cool melody but the only thing I don't like is the trumpet solo - which is ironic since Billy is holding a trumpet on the album cover. Of course the BEST song on "52nd Street" is "Honesty". It always brings a tear to my eye. His vocal delivery is stellar on this track. I love Billy Joel. He is the best thing to ever happen to pop music. Buy this album today. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars il secondo gioiellino di Billy Joel
Reviewed in Italy on March 6, 2021
Come arriva "Zanzibar", "Stiletto" o "Until the night".
Chiedetelo a mia figlia.
