    There are notable differences between a genuine GSWF filter and the one I received. The biggest difference being that the installation handle is not parallel to the shelves after installation. All filters up to this point have had a horizontal handle and not a 45 degree angle such as this one.The genuine filter that I removed was made in Taiwan and had a decal for a label. This filter is “made in USA” and is printed directly on the filter. There are several typos on the label. (See photos) The genuine filter has a Uniform Plumbing Code shield while the suspect filter has an NSF circle.The safety seal when removed left a film on the filter that could only be removed with a razor. Under the safety seal, the center is white and not blue like the genuine GE.The installation adapter is only pressed fit to the body and not plastic welded like the genuine GE. There is a small gap between the adapter and body.Installation went fine, the box looked legit. Buyer Beware!

    This is the 3rd time I have replaced the filter in the 4* years that I have owned the fridge. Cost is cheaper here and service was excellent. The GE filter actually lasts about a year depending on usage. As long as the flow is good the filter is working. Just remove filter when light first appears, give it a quick shake and rinse in the sink, re-install and reset the light. If flow is still good use it until the light illuminates again. I have not tried the generic ones but have gotten good use from the branded ones at a much better price with free shipping from Amazon.

    Update: Light went on in December almost to the day from when I switched it out last. Tried the trick of removing filter, shaking it and running the opening under tap water. Re-installed the filter, re-set the light and went about my business. It is now March and the light has yet to come on, flow and taste are still good.
    Could it be that the change filter light has a built in timer that comes on regardless of the condition of the filter? I'm just saying.
    I will buy a new one here once I am convinced the old one actually needs replacing.

    these filters seem to eliminate the strong chlorine taste and smell in our area .. the filters last a long time and they do what they are supposed to do. they are a bit expensive and when you order be careful. other filters are also presented that look identical at a lower cost . just a one letter difference in model number. if you don't notice that, you will get filters that will not work ... make sure what you are getting is the right one .. GE-GEWF looks identical to GE-GSWF but they are not compatible. its easy to get the wrong one since they are listed along with the desired one as if they are an option. . Amazon is great at fixing such a mistake but its better not to make it to start with. i haven't used the after market versions because of some reports of less than perfect results. we have always had perfect results with the GE brand filters. no need to switch since the difference in cost isn't worth the risk for me..
