I have only done a few tests and will be shooting music with it in a club tomorrow night. Everything looks great so far, plus it will work just fine on the 5D3 as well. Canon really needs a FF body with touch-screen focus. I am looking forward to that. Loving this lens so far!
Time passes and during that time I sold my 24-70mm f/2.8L lens to finance something else because I seldom used it. I only used it when I had to shoot a group somewhere other than outdoors in the sun. I thought that my 24-105mm f/4L would be enough. I was wrong.
I recently had a group shoot, outdoor in the early morning. No problem, right? Just take the f/4. Then it clouds up. Long story short I got the shot but it got me to thinking about investing in another f/2.8 wide angle lens.
Doing my research I came across a lot of possiblities but I did not want to spend a $2K on a lens I would not use more than a couple times a year. Plus I did not want to add another heavy lens to the bag, because if they are heavy I tend to leave them at home! Which is bad.
This lens being on sale brought it to my attention, as I doubt I would have paid full price for it. But it is perfect for my needs. It is very sharp with great color reproduction and very light weight. It is small and does not take up much room in the bag.
So from my 2 sessions with it so far this is a very good lens. I highly recommend it.
Also, while it is not as sharp as the EF 24-70 f/2.8L II in the corners at f/2.8, it is MUCH smaller and lighter than that lens. And, at f/4 and above (where you'd most likely use it) it basically matches the performance of the EF 24 f/2.8L II and EF 24 f/1.4L. In fact, in some ways it exceeds them in terms of being much less prone to flare than either of the more expensive L lenses.
Thus, I am quite impressed with this lens. It is not the best quality 24mm that exists, but it certainly is the best under $1000 and it offers a level of portability that higher priced 24mm lenses do not.
My biggest issue with the lens is how noisy the autofocus is. In a quiet room, a shotgun mic pics out the whirring very easily, and makes in camera audio unusable. This is especially disappointing because it is the perfect focal length for making videos with your camera on a desk or tripod. I wanted something wider angle than the 50mm 1.8 because you have to put the camera so far away to get good framing, and I wanted something that was fast and had image stabilization for handheld video. If I could go back and make the decision over, I think I would just settle for the non-IS APSC 24mm lens. It's probably not worth the extra couple hundred dollars and being able to carry it on with you to the full frame world. That being said, it's a descent all-around prime for street, landscape, a little bit of portrait, and a surprising amount of semi-macro photography.
I use the Canon t3i.
