If you are a basic to intermediate photographer, you are going to have a lot of fun and satisfaction usig these lenses.
Anyway, these lenses are well worth the money. I see people spend more and take worse photos. I absolutely love these lenses. I recently upgraded to the 5d mark iv and I’m sad I can’t use the 10-18. I took some great photos with it.
The only thing you gotta look out for on the 10-18 is if you’re using an nd filter or polarizer while closer to 10mm. You will get some natural vignette from the lens picking up the filter.
Full speed ahead. Affordable and worth it.
Fast forward several years and I started looking for ways to get a little more serious about photography as I was taking tons of pictures of the kids and they were just ok. You know good but not great. That's when the adventure into camera lenses began and I was almost put off immediately by the cost. In many cases, the lenses cost more than my entire camera kit with the two lenses it came with, but I persisted and I'm glad I did.
The 50mm lens in this kit alone is worth the cost of the kit. While a fixed lens and although you have to be prepared to step back a bit for larger subjects (group photos, etc.) the images that you get on this thing - WITH NO EXPERIENCE OR TRAINING - are AMAZING. During my research, I learned that the blurry background we'd originally got the DSLR for is called bokeh. And while the kits lenses do produce some bokeh and the subject of the photo is clear while the background is slightly blurry, this lens takes it to a whole nother level. With this lens the subject is crystal clear and the background is often blurred to the point of looking like its been post processed in Photoshop or something.
The 10-18mm lens is great as well for wider shots. It gives you a nice range between the zooms offered by this kit lenses the cameras typically come with. Images are clear, autofocus works well, and unlike the 50mm you don't have to walk all the way across the street when taking a photo of a larger subject.
Long story short - if all you have is the kit lenses that came with your camera - get this kit! We were able to save a couple bucks by buying one of the Used ones listed under the "new and used from other sellers" section but now that I've seen the results of this kit, I would gladly have paid full price for it so we could've gotten the original packaging, manuals, etc.
The 10-18 is good for lanscape shots and dramatic wide angles with the fish eye effect at 10mm. I used it for photo and video on my trip in Italy and got some amazing landscape shots and videos inside cathedrals. My only issues with it are that it is not particularly bright at 18, and it's a little bit too warped for my taste at 10mm. On my SL2 at 10mm it is just enough to be noticable and curve lines, but not quite enough to be an artistic fish eye. I will say that the build quality on the 10-18 is probably the best out of all of the APSC lenses that I own.
If I could go back and make the decision again, I would probably just buy the 50mm. Not because the 10-18mm is a bad lens, but because I could then spend the money I saved on a better camera body. If I was going to spend 1000$ on camera equipment, I would buy a full frame camera like the EOS RP. Just that camera body with this lens would be great for street photos, portraits, and narrower landscapes. That being said, if you do already have a crop-sensor camera, you are doing yourself a disservice not to own the 50 1.8.
