I looked at a ton of drills and decided on one of these styles. They are the smallest and lightest duty corded drill that come with an optional hammer setting. I eventually bought a DeWalt DW511. I used it for about a week before I returned it and bought this Milwaukee being reviewed. The DeWalt had its pluses but the motor had a strong smell to it, the fit and finish was a little lazy and I got the overall impression that it wouldn't last the test of time. I could have been wrong there but that what what my intuition was saying.
Things I like about the Milwaukee:
+The fit and finish is about perfect. No jagged edges or gaps, nice cachunks from the switches, great fitment between chuck and key. This to me indicates a high level of build quality all around.
+Its very solid. This comes at a price of more weight than equivalent competitors (like the DeWalt, which was very light for its power). It gives you the impression that it could be dropped off a few ladders.
+The depth rod and the handle can be adjusted independently. On most drills, including the DeWalt, you have to loosen them both at the same time. On this drill you twist the handle to loosen the handle, and press a trigger to move the depth rod.
+The chuck key is mounted on the power cord and can be used that way, but it is held on with a little rubber sleeve over the crossbar. This means you can easily remove the key from the cord if you want, and just as easily slip it back on. It works well for those times you want the key in your belt, or are at maximum reach with the cord.
+The trigger lock is reliable, easy to use, and unobtrusive. The DeWalt's wasn't.
+Clever use of rubber on the body mean useful grips abound. I had some awkward spots and a few tight squeezes, but always found a way. I particularly like the one high up on the back that allows you to pinch the drill and hold it that way.
Things I don't like:
-The hammer setting is good, and I used it to great effect, but I get the impression that this drill won't do intense hammer drilling for long periods of time. I would view the hammer setting as something to be used sparingly. I think this is just the class of drill as opposed to a fault of this particular one. I felt the same way with the DeWalt.
-The secondary handle works well but it doesn't seem to be at the same level of quality as the rest of the drill. It doesn't quite line up straight when screwed down, and is a simple spring steel clamp encased in a bunch of plastic. This is one area where I thought the DeWalt was better, its secondary handle was more comfortable and more solid.
-Continuing from the last point, the depth rod has a problem with it: it can't handle much pressure before it slides backwards. I actually ruined a decent bit because of this. I was drilling into wood that was mounted to cinder blocks and was using the depth rod to tell me where the wood ended and masonry began. Now I remember to not put much pressure on that rod. It's more of a visual indicator than a solid surface.
Good drill, not perfect, but I think its going to go the long haul.
