I got this to help with external SATA SSD drives that I have to be more portable. This item fits the needs and a little more by not requiring power for my SSD. The included power supply could be for things like bigger HDD or CD drives but for most SSD it'll likely not be required.
There's a little pin-hole blue LED on the device which appears to show just the communication activity and power. It only comes on during USB power, not for external power. Flashing happens during read/write access.
In terms of speed, max speed seems to suffer with this against a reference 2-bay. In "real world" usage this is not a significant limiter as most access falls in the random category where it does match. It's clear there is a USB limit for this device despite using the same exact drive and same exact USB3.0 port. larger video/etc file usage is where this will suffer. But, give what was said before about the simplicity and no need for external power the convivence is there to make up for this limit so it's a minor issue for me.

Have a very old SATA drive in a drawer?

This is a wonderful and simple to use tool to connect to the old SATA hard drives you have at the bottom of your file cabinet from old computers long since thrown out. Simply plug the SATA connector, which also has a DC power cable that you connect to power and then plug in to your PC like a thumb drive basically and up will pop the contents of the drive. This allowed me to go through 6 or 7 old HDDs to determine if they contained any important documents or anything else. This can be used by almost anyone without requiring a strong knowledge of computing. I couldn't recommend this any stronger.....
