The Pulitzer Prize and Drama Critics Circle Award winning play―reissued with an introduction by Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman and The Crucible), and Williams' essay "The World I Live In."

It is a very short list of 20th-century American plays that continue to have the same power and impact as when they first appeared―57 years after its Broadway premiere, Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire is one of those plays. The story famously recounts how the faded and promiscuous Blanche DuBois is pushed over the edge by her sexy and brutal brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski. Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the '40s and '50s.

Who better than America's elder statesman of the theater, Williams' contemporary Arthur Miller, to write as a witness to the lightning that struck American culture in the form of
A Streetcar Named Desire? Miller's rich perspective on Williams' singular style of poetic dialogue, sensitive characters, and dramatic violence makes this a unique and valuable new edition of A Streetcar Named Desire. This definitive new edition will also include Williams' essay "The World I Live In," and a brief chronology of the author's life.

When reading the novel, A Streetcar Named Desire written by Tennessee Williams; the storyline takes the audience on an emotional roller coaster. The play follows a young and troubled school teacher that is from Laurel, Mississippi; her name is Blanche DuBois. Blanche was moving from her home to New Orleans with all her belongings. There she would move in with her younger sister Stella Kowalski in an apartment that Stella shared with her abusive husband Stanley. When she arrived it was not all the happiness and joy of finally being reunited with her sister, she came bearing bad news. Their family home, Belle Reve, was taken from them after losing every last one of their relatives. This is just a humble piece of what this astonishing play has to offer to us readers. A Streetcar Named Desire is a scathing and cruel indictment of what occurred in American culture after the war. It deals with the harshness of domestic violence, rape, and also emotional abuse. Tennessee Williams had an exceptional talent when it came to playwriting. He had a gift with words that is hard to find in writers these days. He also had a marvelous gift when it came to telling stories not many people have. Williams constructed this play brilliantly, every scene allowed me to visualize and understand the different points he was trying to communicate to all his readers. He never had trouble connecting his audience to his work; when people read his literary works of art, they intently fell in love with his choice of words. He also made it difficult for me to choose which characters I felt worse for, while it is obvious that Blanche is the victim I also felt empathy for Stella. I have read many plays in school but nothing compared to this phenomenal play. I could feel his love for writing when reading his play. I understood his pain in the words he used to express how he felt in his life. Out of all the plays I have had to read throughout my middle school and high school years, I think that this has been my favorite by far. Although it is emotional and chaotic it is essential in the modern world that we shed light to the issues shown throughout the play because many of the tragedies that characters face in the play are unfortunately still occurring to a numerous amount of people in the modern world. One of the quotes that stood out to me was “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” (Tennessee Williams, A Streetcar Named Desire). Not only was this ironic because Blanche did not ever receive the sympathy she deserved. But I also see an important lesson behind this, which is that I can not always depend on the kindness of strangers, I have to learn how to be kind to myself before anyone else. I also wanted to add that this book came in perfect condition and in one day so shipping everything was perfect. I really recommend buying this book and I hope that you enjoy it just as much as I did. Happy Reading!!!

A riveting tale of narcissistic alcoholism showing the true psychopathy of a man willing and able to drive a woman into the mental institution through rape and still have a family down south. This story is for real.

As a student, "A Streetcar Named Desire" (this paperbook edition) has been a captivating exploration. The characters' intricate personalities and the play's poetic writing style create a thought-provoking journey. The edition's annotations and essays amplify the experience, fostering deeper insights into its timeless themes. It's a must-read that has enriched my understanding of human complexities and societal dynamics. Even if you are not a student and looking for an interesting read, I simply cannot recommend this enough.

Streetcar isn’t played out yet! This reading comes some 30 years after my first and the play really holds up well. The people are easily recognizable not as icons or stars but as flawed individuals. I listened to an audiobook as a I read along and the audio play failed to convey much of the action. Seeing the words on paper was devastating. “What have I done to my sister?” Stella will hear herself ask that for years to come.

A true classic. A quick read as well. Read in one day while my boyfriend steam cleaned the carpet and I was confined to our bed for a couple hours amongst all our overturned furniture. Reads like a short story which was great because I dislike plays quite strongly. A little slow to start but push through and prepare to be engrossed in Blanche's jaded view of the life, invested in what happens to her and her sister and surprised by some of the developments along the way! Also, a great vocabulary booster. Would strongly recommend for a moderate reader who wants to increase their skill. This book is not suitable for children due to content (13+).

A masterpiece. Tennessee Williams may be the best contemporary playwright America has ever seen (may he rest in peace). The story is flawless, and the stage directions are so specific and meaningful. Every word is filled with intent, every color is painted through the text, and the message is timeless. The relationships the characters share are well flushed out and highly sophisticated. Williams even describes the music playing during scenes. I hope you read this over and over again, just as I do. A timeless classic, a masterpiece of American Theatre.
