J.R.R. Tolkien was born on 3rd January 1892. After serving in the First World War, he became best known for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, selling 150 million copies in more than 40 languages worldwide. Awarded the CBE and an honorary Doctorate of Letters from Oxford University, he died in 1973 at the age of 81.

I love this all in one volume. I am using this copy to collect as many autographs from the actors as possible. Sadly the book had no packing. Some damage to the dust jacket and some to the bottom of the pages. I won't return as this copy will be handled, read and loved. But for anyone collecting this book for their collection prepare for yourcopy to be slightly damaged on arrival.

So this is a lovely book, of course, and I appreciate it in one tome of reasonable size that feels good to hold and read. I realize that to accomplish that the paper needs to be a bit on the thin side but these pages are a bit TOO thin for my taste. It's a necessary evil, but it's still an evil. Besides that I think the binding is a little weak with the front cover becoming slightly unbound just from regular handling and reading about half-way through fellowship, so take it as you will. Besides that it's a great edition with some nice illustrations and an appendix loaded with additional nerdy information for people who really want to dig deep.
