ATSC is free over-the-air digital HDTV standard for North America and requires an antenna for reception. There is no monthly fee for ATSC HD TV. Plex, Hauppauge's WinTV v8 app and Windows Media Center support ATSC TV.

Clear QAM is digital cable TV.

Clear QAM allows users to watch unencrypted HDTV stations from cable TV without a set-top box. Clear QAM TV is not available on all cable networks, so check with your local cable TV operator for clear QAM availability. Hauppauge's WinTV v8 app and Windows Media Center support ATSC TV.

    I got this working on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS by following the "TV tuner install with PPA" instructions on Hauppauge's website. I use Kaffeine to scan and watch channels in the U.S. and it works just fine!

    Works great, two tuners so you can record and play different channels. As other tuner commentators have noted, you need an antenna, but I’m nearly 20 miles away and I just have a cheap flat antenna - try a cheap one before you think you need a big roof or attic antenna. The one included also worked, but it was a little lacking. Also, when I used the little amplifier that can with the antenna, it overloaded the tuner and I had to unplug and reboot. You need plenty of storage space to record, I got a 500mb ssd and it seems more than plenty for my needs using Plex.

    I purchased this to receive the clear QAM channels from DISH that are provided by my apartment complex which does not provide a way to record the channels. This device (and PLEX) allow me to record the channels as I choose. The only issue I have with it is that when I scan the channels the over-the-air channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and CW) are marked as protected, even though I know that they are not. I am fairly technical but have not been able to edit the EPG so those channels are not blocked. Overall, a perfect choice for my purposes.

    Did just as advertised, software and registration went right through. Only downfall for me was the antenna. Yes, it's a digital antenna, but it is the Analog equivalent of a coat hanger. I tried it in two locations on the edge of the metro, and it didn't pick up a single channel. Had a chance to hook it to a friends 10" x 15" flat panel outdoor digital antenna, and it picked up 58 channels less that 75' from where I tried the included antenna.

    If you are going to use it in a metro area, you're good. But if not, plan on an upgraded / amplified digital antenna as a must do upgrade.

    I purchased this after wanting to watch OTA TV on my phone on the go. I knew this was one solution after hearing about it years ago from a few tech youtubers. It does work with the channels app and plex on the sheild but not good. The channels app didn't have audio. Something to do with a dolby license on the shield. The plex would connect the tuner but not for long. I could set up live tv/dvr on plex and watch but it would always lose the tuner and give an error to check tuner and antenna. I checked that both worked independent of plex so it has something to do with the turner, plex and sheild working together. I will find another solution because this is NOT IT. DO NOT BUY!!! Oh hauppauge tech support might as well not exist.

    I needed to add surveillance cameras to my PC. My cameras are sent to an ATSC cable transmitter throughout the house along with over the air signals. My PCs are windows 7 Professional. I had some trouble trying to get the WINTV sticks to work with my old operating systems. Because I am not a computer wiz, I used Hauppauge's chat to try to get help. After some simple trials to get my system setup, they offered an appointment to use Teamview to get on my machine to debug the problem. They quickly found out that I needed a security update from Microsoft and they gave me a link to obtain it ( Microsoft does not support windows 7 anymore ) They then installed the update and installed the Hauppauge WINTV dual on my machine. I was very happy. And they gave me an email clearly stating how to install it on my other identical machines. ( which worked perfectly ) I have rarely seen this kind of customer service before. Computer problems are very hard to diagnose and the people at Hauppauge stuck with me until they solved the issue. I am thankful for their service.

    If you're going to plug this into a PC, you most likely want it in the back in one of the fastest usb ports. The problem is, the IR for the remote is on the tv turner so the tv turner has to be in the front of a PC in order for the remote to reach it and even then, the remote is hit and miss at times.

    If the IR came as a separate usb device and the remote was made bigger and more powerful, this would have been a 5 star tv turner for the price.

    I always wanted the function of being able to pause go back or record live tv with ease and this device accomplishes this splendidly. I bought a coaxial cable splitter and I have my existing wall antennae going to a powered signal booster, and from there it goes to the splitter, and from there it goes to my TV in my living room and to my computer where the Hauppauge is connected. Having the splitter allows me to turn on my TV and recieve a signal on it like any normal TV would. However, since I have my computer hooked up to my TV it doubles as a computer monitor so I can watch TV using the Hauppauge in my living room on my TV or in my bedroom on my computer using one of my two monitors. I have not had much success though with the remote. I think I hit a button on it one time and it actually responded but beyond that I don't think it's worked at all, although I have not done any troubleshooting to figure out what might be wrong as I don't care much about that yet. Just very happy that I have a relatively inexpensive way to have the previously mentioned features it affords me (Particularly so I can watch my favorite sports teams and go back and watch plays over if I think I saw something to complain about XD).

    Seems to work best most in powerful and memory loaded computers. At first looked easy enough, the install download from Hauppauge for win 10 didn't work. None of the computers recognized the 1657 as an USB device, even in Device Manager. Toying around and getting nowhere, I noticed another page on the website side small file extra driver for win10 (wintv-solo_dual_quadhd). In desparation installed it. That did the trick. It recieves channels just as well as my existing TV, but now I have a dual channel DVR. Intuitive user interface and smart TV Guide. I can pause anytime and resume live channels. Well worth the money.
    15 jan 2023 Update: Still operating well, the HD is the standard compressed version not as good as over the air uncompressed HD. The recorder surprisingly can record programs through name recognition. Records daily/weekly series of a show even if they move the schedule around.

    What a waste of money this was, I don't exactly know if this is an Australian problem or I'm just unlucky, but it never worked at all and there was no customer service to attempt to even fix my issues.

    I use it to replace hauppage video capture card. Image quality it's over hauppage. Make a very nice job, no configuration to do. Plug and watch, that it.
    Negative point: it's just a video capture card, not programmable for a specific channel or time to record, you need to be use the Windows scheduler an change channel manually.
