DisassemblyRemove the cylinder head bolts with a 15-mm deep-well socket and ratchet. Because the Modular engine is a torque-to-yield engine, all cylinder head bolts must be replaced. Do not reuse them. |
Selecting PartsThe best overall DOHC head for any DOHC build is the FR500, except for the 2000 Cobra R head, which you will likely never see at a swap meet. Ford produced a handful of 2000 Cobra R heads, most of which went on these cars from the factory. This makes the FR500 head an excellent value if you’re searching for a super-high-performance head. |

The Machine ShopTorque-to-yield the main caps during line honing according to the spec in the Ford Service Manual. Torque main caps to 22 to 25 ft-lbs, and then 85 to 95 degrees per a torqueto- yield gauge if you’re using new Ford main cap bolts. This sets the main caps for line honing. |
AssemblyVerify piston deck height to confirm the amount of space when the pistons reach TDC. Most engine builders check the number-1 cylinder only. I recommend checking all eight and recording the measurements. This information gives you true TDC on all eight cylinders. Being redundant leaves nothing to chance. |
Break-In and TuningEnsure all wiring, hoses, and belts have been properly installed. Be prepared to shut down the engine if it loses oil pressure or coolant, or experiences some other problem. Once you’ve fired up the engine, allow it to run for at least 30 minutes at 2,500 rpm for proper piston ring and bearing seating. Idle speed alone doesn’t do it. |

Very detailed book, straight to what you need to know, and there is all you want to know related to the topic. All the technical information and detailed step-by-step made this book a key piece of my build. Highly recommend if you are planning of rebuilding one of this engines and make it a fun project.
