About the Author

Dan R. Lynch has a degree in graphic design with an emphasis on photography from the University of Minnesota Duluth. But before his love of art and writing came a passion for rocks and minerals, developed during his lifetime growing up in his parents’ rock shop in Two Harbors, Minnesota. Combining the two aspects of his life seemed a natural choice, and he enjoys researching, writing about, and taking photographs of rocks and minerals. Working with his father, Bob Lynch, a respected veteran of Lake Superior’s agate-collecting community, Dan spearheads their series of rock and mineral field guides―definitive guidebooks that help amateurs “decode” the complexities of geology and mineralogy. He also takes special care to ensure that his photographs complement the text and always represent each rock or mineral exactly as it appears in person. He currently lives in Madison, WI, with his wife, Julie, where he works as a writer and photographer.

Dan R Lynch has written numerous field guides, monographs, and kids' books on rocks and minerals, with a speciality in agates. He got his start by growing up in a rock shop run by his parents where he began learning the nuances of rock and mineral identification from a young age. After earning his degree in graphic design and photography, he combined his love of art, his interest in the natural world, and his geological knowledge into a series of books that aim to help new collectors and hobbyists "decode" the complexities of the earth sciences and mineral identification. By taking a "from the ground up" approach, Dan's books quickly and concisely teach novices the important terms and concepts they need to know so that they can start enjoying the incredible geology underfoot. Above all, Dan has made it his aim to communicate science honestly and factually; to dispel anti-science myths and misinformation with easy-to-understand language, an objective viewpoint, and photos that he hopes will inspire wonder in the natural world.

This book is great to have in your backpack. It has clear color photos of just about every rock you could think of coming across in California. The pages are strong and coated so they're easy to wipe down and keep clean. I don't normally like spiral bound books but this one is nice, compact, the pages turn easily. Glad I purchased this book.

I'm in the woods a lot so I needed a small book to carry with me to help identify rocks. This book is very basic but for a quick look it's very handy it atleast gives you am idea of where to start and what it may be. I would recommend

I give it 4 stars for the cost and photos. It's missing a lot of rocks and minerals. It's a nice layout and handy to keep in the glove compartment. It's excellent for someone just learning or a beginning California Rockhound. Intermediate to advanced Rockhounds or people with a strong background in earth sciences will be a bit disappointed. Well worth having, or a couple of copies to give out to friends kids. I do recommend adding this to your reference library.

Good guide to have for quick reference. Use it when we have no internet service. My 14 year old uses it with ease.

I tried using this to identify river rocks in the Sierras with my kids, but the descriptions are just not sufficient to identify anything. The photo quality is poor, and the whole thing is really short. I regret this purchase.
