Ordered from GameRoomsWithStyle, came in the mail 1 1/2 days later. Was shocked at how fast it came. Packaging was great. A lot of people are complaining that it doesn't run on windows 7, don't know what they're talking about. I've got it on multiple computers and it runs completely fine. Only issue I ran into was one of my laptops had a un-supported video card which was causing the game to crash when I hit new game. I just downloaded a file called d3d9x.dll and put it in the the fallout directory and it started up right away. A lot of people are having issues with their computers since they don't physically have a video card (and are blaming their OS for it), their using a GPU which is part of their processor, which is unsupported by Fallout. Putting that d3d9x.dll file into your directory will force the game to see that you have a designated video card. I had no need to use Games for Windows Live, and no need for steam. Infact, other then needing that .dll file you don't even need the internet to play this game on windows 7.

As a fan of the original Interplay games fallout 1,2 and tactics, I enjoyed the turn based combat and story driven game play, I wasn't sure that Bethesda would deliver in that area, but not only did they manage to find a plot that followed the old canon but also they introduced V.A.T.S. in a new way allowing a semi-turn based combat for those of us that are not as quick or skilled with the gamepad. I enjoyed the inclusion of old non-player characters, such as Harold and Dogmeat. This made for some nice moments of nostalgia and also solidified Bethesda's place in the Fallout universe. Overall 5 out of 5 for an excellent game with both story line and control.

Fallout 3 doesn't run on Windows 7. It crashes every 3 to 5 minutes. Bethesda's has yet to come up with a solution to get it to work on my Dell XPS 8300 machine. Amazon should make it clear that this is a Windows XP game.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTICO!
Reviewed in Italy on March 16, 2016

5.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Want To Set The World On Fire...But Windows 8 Will Give It A Try
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2013
WARNING! THIS REVIEW MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!

First off, I just want to say that as a complete rookie newcomer to the whole Fallout saga, but a big fan of Bethesda's other titles such as Oblivion and Skyrim, I love this game. This why I'm giving it 5 stars overall, because it just deserves it. I have the wonderful privilege of being able to play it on Ultra graphics, which for a game released almost five years ago now is still holding up very well to standards and initially blew me away when I first stepped out into the Capitol Wasteland. The game itself is huge (I'm guessing that I've barely scratched the surface at about 42 hours game time) which is to be expected when you take into account the size of Oblivion and Skyrim. You can happily wander the wastes for hours, running into various locations of interest, towns (what's left of them) and wastelanders, most of which lead to quests of their own that can influence your character's place in the world through gaining good or evil 'karma'. The weapon selection is vast, and I come across so many new varieties that my character can't physically carry them all! Saying that, it can be hard to find ammo at times so economising how much you use against enemies is essential to survival. From what I have seen of the story so far, it is very good - cliched in its structure perhaps, as it very much along the lines of 'have a great childhood with dad, dad leaves, go find dad (or try to repeatedly), find dad, realise life is a lie, dad dies, etc. etc'...but the characters and quests are gripping enough that this commonly used storyline is scarcely noticeable under all the awesome combat and survival it takes to master the wastes. The combat system with V.A.T.S (Vault Assisted Targeting System) is unlike anything I've ever seen in gaming before and really quite innovative as you target a Mutie's head, get a critical hit, and watch it explode in a mess of blood and brains. I also love how hard I have to work to survive. The satisfaction of killing something nasty is alright and all, but try doing that when you're out of bullets...and in the metro system all alone...with no Stimpacks to heal those ghoul-bite boo-boos...then you go to work! It's the case of kill 'em with a switchblade or drink irradiated water from the toilets (taking the rads) to boost health. An extreme scenario, but one that made me laugh when I actually had to do it! What I love about Fallout 3 is that the survival element never comes across as frustrating, unlike Metro 2033 where you never truly know when to change those pesky gas-mask filters...

Additionally, the Game of the Year Edition in particular is excellent value for money, as for only a few quid more than the standard edition of the game, you're getting all the add-on's. This literally adds hours of extra play, and I haven't even touched one of them yet. New locations, new enemies, new weapons - it's all worth it. I understand from trawling around the forums that some are better than others, but for this price, who cares?

There's so much more I could write about the game, but it's already been done far more succinctly than I could ever write it, so here comes the really realistic part of my review: Windows 8. Will it run? Yay or nay? Well, the answer is, in my case, somewhere in between. Personally I love Windows 8; I've never had any problems with it, it was easy to get used to, and it always seemed to seamlessly mold itself around each game I installed on my laptop. I thought that Fallout 3 would be no different, as it plays The Sims 3 with no problems and that game is only about a year younger. I was wrong, but not drastically. For the sake of anyone else who might encounter these problems when installing and playing on a Windows 8 computer, I'll highlight the issues I've faced (and still facing.) The installation was initially very good, as I put in disk 1 and it installed the main game beautifully. The only message that did pop up was one warning me about 'compatibility issues', but I had had this message before with other games so it didn't really bother me at first. Then the first obstacle occurred: installing the DLC. This was made more difficult by the fact that my computer didn't want to autorun the disk. I had to go into my computer (which admittedly was no great hardship) and go into the disk itself to run it. Then it didn't seem to want to recognise that I'd actually clicked on it to run it, and my computer froze several times before it decided (miraculously) that it wanted to install. A little tip after installing the DLC is to go into Data Files on the Fallout 3 launcher and check all the boxes are ticked for the DLC, otherwise the game will assume they aren't installed. After that I was ready to play! But oh, wait, where's the icon? That's right, Windows 8 refused to offer me the choice of whether there was an icon on my desktop or not. Usually my games do this automatically, but nope, there was simply no sign of it anywhere. I searched through the files on the computer but couldn't find anything that would serve as an icon on the desktop, so I have to open my laptop's disk tray with the disk in it and close it again for it to want to run the launcher. Once again, it's no great hardship but it would make it easier if there was icon on the desktop or at least a tab attached to the metro screen. This is something that I will be looking into later, but I've been enjoying the game so much I haven't really thought about it! All of this may sound manageable, and really it is, but then I've consistently had problems with the game crashing and freezing during play. I don't know whether this is the high graphics settings I've got the computer on or not, but it should easily be capable of playing this game at this level, so I can only assume that it doesn't like the OS. My advice is save often, and if you find that it always freezes at a certain point, exit the location or avoid the situation that causes it, and it shouldn't occur. Saying that, I know many people with Windows 8 who have not encountered any problems at all, so it's an unpredictable situation to assume that everyone's going to have problems.

Overall, if you have Windows 8 and think you can deal with any of these potential issues like I can, then it's well worth getting this game as it's very enjoyable and just as good, if not better, than Bethesda's other titles. Not only that, but if you have a Xbox Live account, you can connect to that via Windows Live and unlock achievements as if you are on the 360, which I found to be great seeing as I am generally more of a console gamer than PC gamer.

PS: The company I ordered this game from, PC-Software, were excellent and dispatched the game just hours after I had bought it, in the late afternoon! It came the next morning via post, so I am extremely happy with their service and would definitely try to buy from them again.
