Set in Oregon in 1885, this is the story of Indigo Wolf, daughter of Hunter of the Wolf and his white wife, Loretta, from Comanche Moon and Comanche Heart. When she was younger, Indigo fell in love with a young man who broke her heart and betrayed her trust, telling her she was just a "squaw" and good for only one thing. Though his attempted rape was thwarted by her uncle, Swift Lopez, Indigo is still scarred by the experience and wary of men who are attracted to her. She has become her own woman, tending to the wild animals of the forest, wearing Indian dress and helping her father with the mine.

When a series of mine accidents have her father, Hunter, laid up with injuries, along comes Jake Rand to offer his hand at managing the mine (though he seems to spend little time doing that). In reality, Jake is the oldest son of a wealthy owner of mines, many of which were purchased when the mine owner was in trouble, as Hunter is now. While Jake originally came to purchase Hunter's mine, when he finds out his father may be causing the mine accidents, he comes in disguise to learn the truth. He didn't count on meeting the bewitching Indigo who soon has him forgetting he has a fiancé back in Portland. And he shakes Indigo's world, too. ("The moment she first saw him, she had sensed it--an inexplicable something, a strange feeling of recognition--as if her destiny had finally come calling.")

As with the first two books in the series, Anderson has captured the time period and the Comanche culture with practiced expertise. She makes it look easy when it isn't. We see Wolf's Landing and it's unusual blending of cultures from Jake's point of view, a stranger to this part of Oregon. Jake is impressed by the love he witnesses in the Wolf family. He has known poverty as well as wealth, but he has never known such simple joys as the Wolf family shares. So when an unusual happening forces a "shotgun wedding" to Indigo, Jake steps up to do the noble thing even though Indigo rebels at the idea of marrying any man.

Anderson tells the story of Jake and Indigo beautifully with elegant dialog and believable twists and turns. And wonderful secondary characters! I loved the family priest, Father O'Grady. He and Jake have a very funny conversation about Indigo that had me laughing out loud.

It's a great read and I recommend it! I do, however, suggest reading them in order.

The Comanche Series:

Comanche Heart, 1991
Indigo Blue, 1992
Comanche Magic, 1994

Jake and Indigo, two people from two different worlds 🌎.

Indigo has Indian blood running through her veins, Jake is a White man who is finding his life isn't what he wants.

She is afraid to give herself to a white man because she has been hurt terribly by white men.

Read this story and find out what true love ❤️ is all about!

Indigo Wolf is the daughter of a white woman and a part Comanche man (see Comanche Moon for their story). Jake Rand comes to town, a wealthy businessman disguised as a mine foreman, to investigate the mining mishaps that he thinks were caused by his father. He's fascinated by Indigo, who's a wild spirit to his city-slicker self.
I learned a lot about mining which seems to be a trademark of Ms. Anderson's books (not specifically mining but she adds in a lot of historical detail which I appreciate and like). The story is good with lots of drama and romance.

Having never read the Comanche series by Catherine Anderson, I was surprised at how I fell in love with Indigo in this wonderful story. I have always had a soft spot for any Indian lore, as I know I was from some tribe in an earlier life. More than likely Havasupai. The way in which the author has the main character walk between two worlds, her Comanche and the Western one, adds great depth to this book. By far one of my favorites.

Wonderful story

After reading both Comanche Moon and Comanche Heart, I was eager to read Indigo's story. I was somewhat disappointed because parts of the story just didn't seem plausible in light of her family history. First, I cannot imagine Indigo, having been raised by Hunter the Wolf and Loretta (interracial marriage) having some of the stereotypes and fears she held. I could understand Hunter and Loretta having them, as parents brought up in a different time. Clearly, all of our racial problems have not be solved, but the series has lead me to believe that Hunter's story is about pride and honor in the midst of the racial prejudices. I did not see much of this in Indigo's character.

Nor did I find chemistry between Indigo and Jake. Yes, I could grasp her sexual fears in light of her earlier attack, but her character was made to appear submissive. I liked Jake's character, even though I did not understand his patience with Indigo -- and was pleased to finally get to the well-written confrontation he finally has with Indigo. It was a great summation of racial prejudice, low self-esteem and the fear that often accompanies both.

Again, this was not my favorite in the series, though it was a good read. I just think it could have been better.

Indigo Wolf is as special a character as her half Comanche Father, Hunter Wolf. The unpretentious realism Catherine Anderson is able to create in this strong, wounded, drifting in the wind heroin is nothing short of remarkable. Seeing her face and conquer all her enemies great and small, watching her come into her own with an honesty, maturity and tenderness that will bring out the love we all long to hold on to is beyond refreshing. It is like dancing on clouds lighted by the moonflower of eternal love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Viertelblut-Comanchenfrau Indigo erkennt sich selbst
