The Start of ELOs Classic Era — But What's with that Horrific Cover?!
4 Stars
The Start of ELOs Classic Era — But What's with that Horrific Cover?!
ELO started to catch their groove on this album. Nothing here is as glorious as their later classics — "So Fine," "Turn to Stone," and "Evil Woman" to name a few — “Showdown” and “Ma-Ma-Ma Belle” are among the group’s better efforts, and the rest of the album shows their promise as one of the premiere bands of the post-Beatles era. Few artists were better at blending pop sensibilities with progressive bombast than 1970s Jeff Lynne, and this is where it started for him and ELO.Now about that horrific cover. It could be the most inept excuse for album art of any major artist. Ever. It's not just that it's ugly — there have been plenty of ugly album covers. It's that it looks like they didn't care or even try. Black background and two pieces of horrible clip art. That's it. Granted, the band shot on the original cover wasn't exactly fine art, but at least it made sense, was done professionally, and was of the era. On this one they didn't even bother to blend in the square, horribly out of focus photo of Lynne's face. It literally looks like they created it in Microsoft Word. Whoever did this (I can't imagine Lynne had anything to do with it) should be embarrassed to have put it on the market. I almost considered deducting one star because of it.Buy this for the music, then print out a copy of the original cover and stick it in the case. There. Fixed.

Younger people should perhaps buy these CDs and actually experience real song writers, real musicians and performers that can still out perform in every way the production line bands of today. Excellent in every way.

I remember buying this LP when it first came out. And I love it today just as much as I did all those many years ago. Hearing Showdown for the first time on the radio was hard to describe back in the early seventies. It was so different from everything else. Getting the LP home and hearing "In The Hall Of The Mountain King" was even more exhilarating. I had only heard Grieg's version. And Ma-Ma-Ma Belle I remember listening to in the barracks at Fort Campbell. Everyone loved those songs. A classic album re-mastered by the master himself, Jeff Lynne. What a great ride this album is. All 9 tracks. If you love ELO and don't have this in your collection, you really should. Do yourself a favor, add this to your collection. The price certainly is right.. Thanks to Amazon and Mr. Lynne.

Ok this is ELO's third album. For any ELO fan this is a must have. I bought it to back up my original 1973 album that I still play. For a lot of us Vinyl or CDs are the best media for music. CD's are dirt cheap now compared to when I started buying them in 1984. Can't go wrong with this purchase.

This isn't my favorite elo cd but it's a great one. I must admit that I like side two or the last tracks better than the rock opera on the first side. That being said you know that elo is a prog rock band and you expect things like that from that type of band. Elo makes music that should last far into the future because it's just great. You get two 'hits' here the top forty 'showdown' a real classic radio track and 'ma ma belle' which also was a hit. that's very good for any cd however unlike most cd's this one isn't a collection of songs only, the first group of songs are interconnected and run on a theme. This band could always pull off grand ambitions and that just makes ELo all the more remarkable. I like the remasters on all these elo releases and I would say those who harping on sound issues aren't listening to the same recording I heard. At least in their own heads.

Finally got one where the case wasn't broken in some way. Amazon knows not now to ship jewel cases. Not going to hurt the album with a bad rating just because of poor shipping. Love ELO!

Borrowed this off of a friend back in the day but not listened to it since. Not actually an ELO fan, but fond memories - Ma Ma Belle is superb - and the simple production works well, not cluttered, busy and too clever like a lot of contemporary stuff.

Rapid service and a quality product, recommended.
