An Incredible Prime APS-C Lens for the Price

An Incredible Prime APS-C Lens for the Price
Frankly, I haven't been overly excited by the crop of inexpensive (read "cheap") Chinese lenses. However, a recent release from a new company called TTArtisan caught my attention. They have released a 50mm f1.2 APS-C (75mm full frame equivalent) prime lens.  The lens has a clickable aperture ring. (Many of the inexpensive lenses have aperture rings that are not clickable. Great for videographers. Not so great for those of us who shoot mostly stills.) The lens appears to be well made. Except for the plastic rear cap, the lens has an all metal and glass construction. Even the lens cap is made from metal and it screws on the lens instead of using those awful spring loaded caps. And the price is amazing low!I received my copy today and, frankly, not expecting much, I took a few quick shots outside late this afternoon.  (See the attached JPEG photos from the original RAW files.)I was impressed with the ease of use on my Fujifilm X-T4. Even though the aperture ring is placed uncharacteristically at the end of the lens, I found it not to be an issue. The focus ring turns smoothly and with the right amount of friction. Being able to open the lens to f 1.2 was an advantage as some of the locations were heavily shaded from the late afternoon sun.Although this isn’t the sharpest lens that you can buy, it is amazingly sharp especially when stopped down. How they did this for this low of a selling price is pretty amazing!

The lens, for the money, is one of the best values today. It’s sharp, the bokeh is pleasing, and the all metal construction means it’s quite durable. You’re basically getting vintage Takumar quality without the radiation. It’s a manual lens with really good physical traits and pairs exceptionally well when using a focus assist like focus peaking. The aperture ring has good clicks without being unreasonably loud. The value of this lens can’t be overstated.

The lens itself is solid. It takes better photos and has better focusing control than many vintage lenses. It's not as good as Fuji's lenses, especially with contrast. The lens body and glass visually looks fantastic as well. But after about a year and a half the lens has oil leaking on the aperture blades. So while it feels like it is built like a tank, I have to wonder how long will it really last for?

To say this is worth the money is an understatement. Although I’ve only taken a few test shots on an XE-2, this beefy lens is gorgeous. It’s sharper than I would expect for the price, focuses within 2 feet, and the focus and aperture rings feel great. It’s difficult to not get excited about this buttery 1.2 lens for under $100. Plus you get a soft lens case and air blower!

I've spent quite a bit of money on system lens. For $98 (what I paid)... you can't beat this. I am highly pleased with what I got. Hefty weight, solid build.
Disclaimer: It is manual focus only. But focus peaking makes finding what you want easy and quick.
With it being manual, it forced me to understand my camera better and improve my photography.

I’m a retired pro photojournalist. I ordered this for my Fuji XPro2. I really wanted to like this lens, if only because unlike most Chinese lenses out there it has clicked f/stops Unfortunately it was a real let down as an everyday useful walk around lens. It has a great build and focus and aperture rings are excellent. Sadly it has a horrible aperture blade design that gives you really ugly geared looking bokeh.

If you only shoot wide open it’s ok, Just a tiny bit soft but very usable as most are at this price range. If you don’t have any light sources in your background that create circular bokeh, you’d probably be ok most of the time. Beyond f/1.2 though, bokeh gets progressively more ugly.

Spend about $20 more and get the 7Artisans 55mm f/1.4 and I think you’ll be much happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great value for APS-C portrait!
Reviewed in Canada on September 1, 2021
Having used the lens in all sorts of conditions, I have been pleasantly surprised by its sharpness wide open, and how easy it was to focus on the Fuji X-E2s. The ring is a bit stiff, but for such a fast lens, it's actually perfect to make precise adjustments. Nothing feels loose, everything is very well greased. The image is very sharp in the center, where it loses only very slightly on the very edges of the corners. The aperture ring is clicky (finally!) so for us photographers, it's great. Half stops throughout.

Something that I enjoy less are the aperture blades profile. It doesn't f/1.2 and f/1.7, but from f/2 to f/5.6 it produces a weird shape to some out-of-focus elements (IE street lights on a dark evening, LED's,). For critical use, use f/1.2 at night (why wouldn't you) or go all the way down to f/8, where it is very sharp for the price.

Pros and cons of the lens:
Pros:
- Very solid in hand
- Great image quality
- Excellent value. Under 200 for this good a lens is hard not to recommend!
- Build quality is comparable to what it was 60 years ago, which means worlds ahead of the plastic bodied lenses we have today

Cons:
- Manual focus can get tiresome
- Quite heavy. It can throw off the balance ever so slightly on smaller cameras (Fuji X-E & X-A Series, Sony a5100 & a6000 Series, Canon M100 Series, those kind) but that's to be expected
- The screw-on lens cap, albeit very solid, is the absolute worst thing they make. Either make it slip-on, or just include a plastic clip-on. I throw it in my bag without one because I have a filter on it.

I do recommend the lens. It's great fun, and a fantastic performer for portrait and general use. Deserves its 5 stars!

I bought a prime lens previously for around £400 and just didn’t do what this lens does. Very happy! I use it on my Fuji Xt-1.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is a very good lens at a good price
Reviewed in Australia on January 7, 2024
The build quality is impressive as is the image quality with the following caveat. It is a manual lens and the camera has to be set to use it's potential, that is use focus peaking which is easy to do on my Fuji cameras. If you are just used to auto focus read the camera manual to find out how to that! Focus is critical with a 50mm lens, take your time and the results are good and I like the images with Fuiji simulations that have a character of their own

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice portrait lens.
Reviewed in Canada on July 22, 2021
Very nice portrait lens if you are use to manual focusing. Great clicked aperture ring! Smooth focus ring properly damped. Solid metal construction. Nice look. Feels a bit front heavy on my Fuji X-E4, I guess it would be better with the Fuji grip added on camera. More easy to handle on my X-T2. Hard to beat for the price!
