I was blown away by how much this game took over my life. At a 105-hour playtime for my first go (with virtually no level-grinding) it definitely gave me my money's worth. I usually get pretty attached to JRPG characters, but I didn't expect to be as involved as I was with this cast. I went from hating some characters to absolutely adoring them by the time the game was over, and every character's side story had me itching to meet with them again and again to see what happened to them, always to the point that I wanted to go out of my way to help them (as you should, given the protagonist's goals and personality).
The story is an extremely on-the-nose view of society at times, and it was riveting to see certain problems escalated on the supernatural scale. There were a couple scenes that felt unnecessary or dragged on too long, but that literally made up less than 2% of my runtime overall so I can't even fault it for that.
Also, it should be worth noting that I am not good at strategy games and I usually don't like them, but the gameplay never felt unbalanced or too over-the-top challenging as SMT has come to be known for (with the exception of one boss, but a quick Google search assured me that everyone hates this boss and has issues with it and there were some helpful tips to get around it). As I mentioned above, I did almost no level-grinding, with my one exception being that I did so for a bit before trying the very first boss just in case (I was still scarred by getting absolutely flattened by vanilla P4 enemies in the past). But the game does a very good job of balancing fights in between scenes so that you don't have to go out of your way to power yourself up; as long as you don't just run past everything in a dungeon, chances are good you'll be at a comfortable level for each boss.
I could go on all day about this game, but suffice to say I got a lot more out of it than what I was expecting. While I have nothing against P4, I thought P5 was an improvement on the series in every way, from the battle system to the social aspects to even just the likability of the main cast. The number of plot twists in this game is staggering, and the fact that they are all GOOD plot twists is even more amazing.
TL;DR if you're waffling on trying this game and the points I made appeal to you, I say go for it, especially if it's on sale like it was when I lucked out and bought it. I would definitely recommend P5R over the original, also, given that a lot of the content I enjoyed most is only available in this version.
And as a final side note, once I finished the game, I looked up the "censorship controversy" that a lot of these reviews ramble about... and please, pay them no attention. The scenes in question weren't even "censored," the translation was just changed slightly to have a more acceptable cultural annotation than what's considered okay in Japan. These kinds of changes are made to every single thing that gets translated into English, and they never get called out because they just don't matter (like this one). If you're honestly angry about that insignificant change, you're too sensitive to be giving your public opinion about anything.
The story is amazing. No spoilers, but it's deep and interesting without being overly convoluted.
The gameplay is simple without being simplistic. It's easy to understand how to win battles, but there is a lot of substance and variety in the moves to give you complexity if you want it.
The music is seriously one of the best in video game history. Go find the soundtrack on YouTube, if you don't fall in love with it I genuinely question if you have a soul.
The only reason I'd say you shouldn't play this is if you've already played P5, because while this does have extra content, I can't say it's enough to justify buying a whole separate game. Otherwise, this is the version to buy and play.
My first play-through was about 161 hours long, so I definitely got my money's worth.
I do recommend you avoid the "free DLC" that you can download, at least on your first run though.
Some of it *literally* breaks the game, changing how you build your summons and making things unnecessarily complicated at the end game. As I understand it, this is a known gimmick the developer has used for years.
If you insist on getting any DLC, be aware that it is locked to your account and cannot be disabled after you realize your blunder.
I saw some people review it, and they said it was so much better that it's worth playing through again, and this is the issue with me. I've played through the original about 5-10 times already, because I loved it so much. Then I buy this, thinking it's going to revitalize the original. In my opinion, it's just the same, with an extra few things, which don't really change the game dynamics that much, but are fun. Definitely, the final chapter and the new characters are really great additions. I would see it as mainly the "true" version of the game, but not too different from the original. Maybe this doesn't make any sense. Oh well.
I personally feel it should have been sold as an "add-on", not a new game entirely. I feel duped.
Then P4G dropped on PC.
It was the best memories and music all over again. While I had ignored Royal, it was time to go back. Save for Mona, the characters in 5 never really got me. The story spun up fine but stalled about half way. The visual style was cool - at first - then wore me out. P5 is a good game and a good Persona game, but just misses the high mark.
Royal I think, doesn’t actually do much better. While Maruki is slotted in well to the OG story, the end doesn’t pay off his themes very well. The ‘extra content’ for the third semester feel just as much if not more forced than Marie is P4G. Mementos wasn’t my jam before but a few hours is mandatory in there all over again. Also Okumura’s palace and boss fight are still the low point of the game. So much in Royal feels like a Christmas Special from an 80s TV show that isn’t really necessary. The game is still an Atlus product where a few bosses are too easy and a few are just insanely hard.
In my first review of P5 I said I still missed my friends and music in P4. I still do. Persona 5 Royal is extra toppings on the burger challenge sandwich, but I’d rather get a beef bowl in Inaba.

The truth is, when I played Persona 5, I thought it would be a near insurmountable task to make a better game. Even the menu screens were polished beyond belief. The music was superb and groundbreaking, the setting and thematic choices were incredibly attractive and fitting, and the artstyle was profoundly stylish. The game itself was above average, as was the story; definitely room for improvement in those departments.
That's where Royal shines. More character depth, more room for the game to grow, and most importantly: actually fun dungeons. Yes, even the dungeons known to be notoriously bad and boring in the base edition were made truly fun in the Royal remaster (at least, in my opinion). The characters went from incredibly to extraordinary in their execution, and the introduction of psychology was a brilliant idea for a game which involves diving into people's minds; one that was well executed too, but for reasons I can't say as it would be spoiling the game.
Needless to say that the Royal remaster of Persona 5 took an already superb game and improved upon it, turning it into a leader among games which cannot be overthrown, at least not for a very long time. Now, if they could only improve the character models a bit more, then I'd have no room for any complaints whatsoever. That's pretty much about the only negative I can think of, and it's not that they're really even that bad, they're just not as stellar as the rest of the game's aspects.
