Inspired by his rock idols, Robert taught himself the guitar, the harmonica, and a strange instrument called the autoharp, which he played to an audience that was easily pleased. |
The songs were poetic yet powerful, and he wrote them under his new name: Bob Dylan. |
Without trying, he became the voice of a generation eager to change the world, putting down in words what millions of people felt. |

About the author
¡Hola! My name is Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara and I’m a writer and creative director from Barcelona. When I was a little girl, I used to read books under the covers with a flashlight once my mom had turned the light off. I always wanted to be a writer… but when I grew up, I ended up in advertising. It was a lot of fun though; I loved working with directors, photographers, designers, and I also wrote scripts, documentaries and texts for all kind of things.
Then, I decided to self-publish a book that had been in my mind for a long time. One day, one thousand copies of the book arrived at my home – I had no idea what I was going to do with them! I opened a little online shop, offered them to some pretty stores in my neighborhood and, one by one, I sold them all. Soon, publishing houses started to approach me to write books, but I was working on another idea of my own: a series about little people with BIG dreams.

They are meant to be a starting gateway for the younger generation to become aware of the great people of history and popular culture. They hope to inspire the kids to become intrigued from these books, then find out more for themselves and see who really inspires them. Because from this book of Bob Dylan, I can sense that the message is: Find out what you are good at, and become great at it, no matter who you are. They emphasized that Bob was an intrinsic who didn't really fit in with the general society, but that didn't stop him from realizing his true calling and passion, and became great at what he really loved. They even emphasized that he dropped out of college to pursue his dream.
I feel this book, and Bob Dylan, can relate to many people who are not like everyone else, not like the general society, who doesn't want to conform. You can be who you are, you can be your own individual and still succeed in life, and I think that is a very powerful message to give to kids. Empower them while they're still young, even if they're not good at school or what you want them to do or be. Find out your kid's strengths, and empower them so they may realize their dreams and skills when they grow up.
The book itself is very high-quality, bounded very good, and the pages are really thick - so thick that I kept trying split them to make sure I didn't miss a page. The illustrations are beautiful, very watery and whimsical, something kids will love for sure. The words are not so big or highlighted, leading me to think these are books for parents to read to their kids, and then show them the drawings after, and not for them to read alone. The length of the story also leads me to think these are for kids ages seven and under, as it is 28 pages long with full page drawings and little writing.
Overall, a good collection to read to your kids, or even for your coffee table. The cover alone really stands out.
PS- I had no idea Bob Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman.

The readability of this book is amazing - I can read this to my five year old and have a slightly decent conversation with my six year old and then in a year or so he will be able to start reading this book on his own.
Art - the art is lovely and simple - but keeps your eyes moving to see everything
Story - the story is simple enough but also complex - It is honest goes on to show how the she persevered though her individual struggles.
With all that being said - this is an excellent book! And each and every one of the little people, BIG DREAMS books introduces your children to a different sport, career, art style, instrument and a life they could also live!
Bob Dylan has been my favorite singer for basically my entire life - reading this was a great introduction to his life in very simple terms. These books are so great because after each one we read we get to see videos/art/pictures/listen to music by the individual. My kids were quiet impressed that he could play the harmonica, guitar and sing at the same time! My daughter even dug up her harmonica and played us some tunes!
The illustrations spread out over most of the paper and are expressive although simple, not drawn with great detail. Much of the color palette is earth tones. The covers are sturdy and nicely bound. Paper is thick and good quality. The print is easy to read.
I was a little disconcerted by the pictures of album covers by other musicians since some of them were recent and I felt like I had jumped forward from the time of the narrative.
At the end of the book there is a two page bio written for adults or teens, and I was glad to see that it mentioned that he was influenced by Woody Guthrie. Meeting Guthrie and studying his songs was so important in shaping Dylan’s music.
The book was manufactured in Guangdong, China. There is a symbol showing that it used paper from responsible sources.
