So, I needed to retrieve some old data from three different HDDs that I had removed from my kids computers over the years. All were SATA interface drives. This worked perfectly and saved me the effort and trouble of having to mess around with connecting these drives to the motherboard directly. Once I got the data I needed, I was able to format the drive without incident. This was on a PC running Windows 11. My adapter was the USB-C version.

Fast File Transfers with Minor Design Issues

Purchased this to improve the speed of searching through files on my collection of old hard drives - some so old, I have yet to find a SCSI to USB interface to access them. For the IDE and SATA drives, everything worked well, but some the drives are mounted with spring clips on the side that made it easier to secure them in an old beige box without having to mess with screws once the drive was in place. The problem is, the clips on the SATA drives extend over the power switch on the adapter, making it a challenge to turn it on once connected. Would be more convenient to have the power switch on the top of the adapter, next to the disc clone switch. That said, was able to search the drives much more quickly than with the USB 2.0 adapter I purchased years ago. It still works, just slowed by its old tech limitations.

Only problem is I didn’t buy 2. More on that later. I’m cleaning and clearing out old hardware and as I run across hard drives, internal DVD writes, and Sata Hds , I get mixed results when installing in PCs, USB ports, etc

I had a very temperamental 8 year old LG DVD writer. I thought it was dead after tinkering a bit.

Not only was it not dead, I rediscovered why I purchased it in the first place, it’s very very fast and this adapter allows it to be. This does work with Windows 11, w/o any additional drivers. Previously with the LG drive, I tried many setups and could not get this old LG to wake up. Once connected to this device via SATA connection, Boy, it more than woke up..

I can read data DVD disks at up to 70mb/sec. Yes 4.2gb / min. That’s a LG thing first, then this adapter does the rest..

I should have purchased 2, as when I have a second device connected, connections drop. But again I’m transferring tons up data from dvd to hard drives at high speeds.

For me, a second unit would be best.

I like that you can turn on and off the unit. Windows views this as a usb device coming on and off line. It has No problem with that.

This also help me discover when I have a bad drive/device equally and quickly.

I've tried "nicer" versions of SATA to USB adapters, but I'll trade 'sleek' for functional any day. Many of the dock-type units simply don't work, or don't work consistently. I keep one of these in every service vehicle. IDE isn't often needed anymore, but why would you go with a SATA only unit when you can have IDE 3.5, 2.5 and SATA all in the same unit? Bottom line, is this little unit works. My only complaint...if you can call it a complaint, is the size of the DC adapter. It would be nice if a thinner, flatter unit with foldable AC tangs were available. It would be much easier to slip in a laptop or tool bag.

I just bought this to test on a 20 year-old laptop IDE hard drive.

First of all, the slots are confusing because I had to use one that omitted using the last two pairs of teeth. It just would not fit on the 3.5 even though, with all the teeth, it appears to be the same size ... save for one pair of teeth skipped on the third end. Go figure, or go check the figure.

Once it connected to the right slot (front end opposite of wires), it worked. However, the box did not come with instructions except to tell me to scan the barcode to go online. The URL on the card would have been nice since I wanted it on my desktop and not my phone and transferring the link via email was time consuming. Luckily, the Amazon website had a link to a manual which had the link to the software which has a different manual altogether. Exhausting!

I was able to see my hard drive finally, but, like others, the connection was erratic, and it kept getting disconnected.

The software is to restore the drive as an original PC. I did not use that since it's a 20 year-old computer. I would not recommend trying that if your connection is faulty. However, for simple file extraction, it got the job done.

My piece of advice is if you're extracting data, do not do a cut, but a copy/paste to be safe and then use a file comparison tool (e.g., WinMerge) to see what files are missing or different upon any disconnect.

I had an old IDE internal drive that was pulled from a PC years ago and which had data that might have had some value. This little unit made it really easy to inspect the contents and transfer them. Just plug in the power supply, then the external drive and the (supplied) power connector, followed by the USB cable and presto!

For SATA drives you don't need the power connector. Small and large connectors are supported.

The USB cable is a bit too short for my purposes. I suppose that helps to ensure the maximum transfer rate, especially over USB-C. The USB-C port on my Dell desktop PC is a bit too high for it so I have to put a book under the unit and drive to elevate it a bit.

Be sure to decide whether you want a type A or type C USB cable. There is a different Amazon SKU for type A. Either way, the end that connects to the UNITEK adaptor will be a micro-B SuperSpeed connector.

If you have external drives lying around, this adaptor is a great way to harness them for backups or other purposes without the hassle and expense of an external drive closure. I have one of those at home (from StarLink) and it can be a pain getting the drive in and out of it. Sure, it's a better option if I want to use it daily -- but it's limited to SATA drives. For occasional use this UNITEK adaptor is more flexible, easier to use, and smaller to store.

It also comes with One Touch Backup software on a mini-CD, though I haven't tried it. The adaptor has a convenient Backup button on it that initiates the backup.

I had a number of old IDE hard drives I needed to search for some missing files. Product was exactly as advertised and even included the bridging cable for the HD power supply. Plugged it in, turned it on and presto, the additional hard drive appeared on my computer. Great product, great service.
