The best dog-friendly hiking backpack on the market

Without a doubt this is the best dog-carrying bag on the market for hiking. It is super comfortable for our dog (who sleeps comfortably curled up half the time she's being carried in it and tries to crawl in whenever she sees the bag laying around), has space to carry water bottles and a water bladder and other gear as needed (not a ton, but far more than other brands) and has additional straps to help distribute the weight from your shoulders. It is world's better than the K9 Sport Sac, for example. We also love that it's so discreet and we can zip the dog in and take her around with nobody thinking for a second there might be a dog in there!

With that said... if you're a serious hiker... it's no Osprey -- which is to say, while this is unquestionably the best bag on the market for carrying a dog, it still pales in comparison to non-dog hiking backpacks. It could really benefit from a more sturdy frame to help better distribute the weight because my shoulders were absolutely killing me by the end of our 8 hour hike. While it can (and does) accommodate a water bladder, it lacks the little hook to hang the bladder on (an easy fix - hopefully it can be adjusted in the next version) so the weight of the water bladder is mostly distributed to the bottom of the bag. We are so happy to have found this bag so that our dog (14 lb shih tzu) can accompany us on long hikes -- just hoping the technology develops a bit further so that my husband and I don't have to draw straws for who has to wear it/her in the future! :)

First I want to let you know that this is an exceptionally well made bag. Kurgo has put a lot of thought into the design, and it is clear that they are listening to and addressing customer complaints. I do a lot of research before purchasing products and I combed through the Kurgo reviews. There were complaints about the inner poles being useless and the floor support pad being made of cardboard. I can reassure you that Kurgo has addressed all this. The inner poles locked into place and the floor was very solid.

With all this said. Ultimately I returned this pack because it didn't meet my needs. Again... it is a great bag.

Who is this for? Great bag for anyone hiking with a largish-small dog (think mini schnauzer, pug, etc.). This would work great for a hiking back where you enough pockets and space to bring along essentials for both you and your pup, like water and treats. Also the pack is very comfortable.

Why was this bag not for me? I wanted to use this bag to socialize my havanese puppy and keep him safe from negative interactions and parvovirus. The bag design did not meet my needs. The puppy tried to crawl out the top hole while walking and the tether was too long to prevent him from getting his top half out the opening. When the top opening is closed, the puppy can't really see out of the bag as the mesh material (which doesn't help with socialization). I ultimately ended up returning this bag and getting the Reddy Pet Carrier Backback. The Reddy is perfect for socializing as the puppy can see out of the mesh panels when laying down, and is still a classic backback design (unlike many of the backpack carriers on here that look like a mesh box with straps sewn on). The Reddy backpack has less pockets than the Kurgo and is not as serious of a hiking bag, but is enough to do the trick, with space for dog bags, keys, snacks, and a water bottle. Big bonus points that is looks like a backpack more than a pet carrier. It would also work well for hikes. There is at least one Amazon seller selling this product at the time of this review. But is is made and sold at a big box pet store, which you can find with an internet search.

Highly recommend the Reddy as an safe and easy way to socialize your puppy or as a comfortable way to bring your small dog everywhere with you.

Not perfect, but possibly the best option for some

I use this for a 4kg rescue cat. I think it’s overpriced, but it also seems to be the only pack of its kind on the market, so for me it’s worth it. Mostly I really like it, although when I use it I'm often finding ways it could be improved, and I’d buy an improved version.

The good:

Function - I travel regularly between two cities with my cat, a 90-minute commute that requires biking, walking, and several buses. Although I travel light, I generally need to bring a laptop and a few other items. This bag is perfect for that, and also inconspicuous and looks like a normal backpack. Pets are allowed on the bus, but my cat prefers not to have a lot of human attention, so he likes that he can see out the side vents, but people don’t notice him. The laptop compartment is roomy, although it won’t fit too much more than a laptop before it starts to intrude into the pet compartment. The pack is well-ventilated (at least for a cooler climate), and still keeps the cat dry in a light drizzle. It has a convenient number of pockets. I’m a smaller woman (47 kg, 162 cm) and had to adjust some of the straps to the shortest settings, but it’s not uncomfortable and I can wear it on my front as well.

Cat rating - Cat is obsessed! I have to hide this to keep him from constantly trying to claw his way in, so instead he finds other backpacks in the house to curl up on. Granted, my cat was already excited about his carrier, and he likes to snuggle under covers and is not claustrophobic. Mileage may vary with other cats. I use additional padding in the bottom for longer trips. He can lie down, but there's not a ton of space left over, especially if I'm packing other stuff.

Durability - I’ve had the bag a few months and it seems to be holding up well, even with abuse from the cat, who protests not being in the bag by trying to shred holes in it. As a result there are some minor perforations and runs in the fabric/straps, but it’s only cosmetic.

The not-so good:

Support - The hip straps really aren’t great. The pack doesn’t have a fully padded or detachable hip strap like the typical hiking pack, despite this pack being in a similar price range. Because the hip straps don’t actually fully encircle the hips, only the sides and the front, and the pack has no internal framing, the backpack tends to slide down in the back and hang off the shoulders, even with the hip straps fully tightened. If my pet were much heavier, this could be really uncomfortable.

Security - I feel like this doesn’t offer much protection from bumps or from falls to the side, although for a more solidly-built animal than my little cat, perhaps this isn’t such a concern. The outward-facing part of the bag is soft and collapsible, and so the inner area is kept open during use by the weight of the cat in the hard base pulling the bag moderately taut against my shoulders. On the bus I’m always worried about people elbowing or pushing against my cat, and a bike accident could be catastrophic. The optional support bars add very little structure, aside from preventing the bag from completely folding in half. A better design (for cats or small dogs, anyway) might include plastic sheeting or boning inserted in the outer panel, top, and sides of the backpack, to give some reinforcement. I also don’t think the fabric is waterproof, and perhaps it should be at this price point.

Price - I feel like it's good quality construction, but for a similar price you can get high-tech hiking backpacks with super light frames, waterproof fabrics, etc., while this is just a regular backpack with some extra padding and clever design elements. I feel they're able to price it like this because for whatever reason, most pet backpacks lack space for human storage.

Tardé casi un año en hacer esta reseña, la mochila la compré para mi perrita poodle de 17 años ya que.ya no podía dejarla sola en casa, ella ya nos dejó pero le heredó la.mochila a mi perrita más jóven (una westie)a la cual le encanta, ella solita se mete en ella, hemos hecho viajes, salidas, paseos con ella y sigue como nueva, súper recomendada, facil de limpiar, con muchos bolsillos, y una correa para agarrarlos por dentro, estoy tan contenta con ella que compraré otra. Está muy bien hecha pero mi bulldog francés de 11 kg no se siente muy cómoda ya que el espacio es un poco reducido, me gustaría que le dedicarán menos espacio a una laptop y le dieran más espacio a lo que es, una transportadora de perro. Quién quiere llevarse una laptop cuando va a cargar su perro en el cerro?!

Our one Frenchie has back issues and can't walk for too long, so we were in the market for a sturdy backpack that we could put him in to go out and about if we're away on a weekend trip. He's about 24 lbs, and he seemed quite comfortable in the pack? He wasn't fighting to get out, and even when we put him down on the ground afterwards and opened the bag, he wasn't rushing to get out. So it seems like a win! I like the reinforced bottom for support, and it's a nice looking pack! I'm not sure we would use the same pack to put other things in, as there wasn't a ton of extra room, but that's ok. Its main purpose is to carry our dog. We're keeping it!

This bag is the perfect size for my dog who is 5lbs/2.3kg. It's big enough so she can sit comfortably in it, and small enough to be convenient for me to carry around. Great for public transportation, or some more difficult part of a hike. But I wouldn't leave her in it for extended amount of time. The only thing I wished was more padding on the straps so it's more comfortable on our shoulders. This is the best backpack a found for my dog, but I don't think a dog much bigger than her would be fitting comfortably in it.
