This tent literally saved my life.
5 Stars
This tent literally saved my life.
I don't write many product reviews. I'm just too busy doing other things. But in this case, I'm going to take the time to review this tent that has literally saved my life on a few occasions. For background, I work as a backpacking guide for an educational organization in Montana. I'm often out for 3-12 weeks at a time in the summer and fall. The courses I teach take students out into a variety of rough landscapes - the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Glacier NP, the Great Burn WSA, Upper Missouri Breaks, and the GYE. I need a solo tent that can handle extreme temperatures during both seasons, is supremely waterproof, that's fairly lightweight and easy to set up. The Elixir 1 has ticked every single box.Pros:- the quality of the materials are the biggest pros for me. Everything feels extremely durable. The fly and floor of this tent are twice as thick as many other one-person ultralight tents, which of course means the tent as a whole is heavier but supremely waterproof. This saved me more than once when we were caught in extended periods of hard rain. On one occasion, we were caught in so much rain that the cirque started to slide. Several tents were pushed down slopes by mud and every single tent flooded...except mine. I was bordering on hypothermic having spent 3 hours counting between thunder and lightening strikes to determine whether or not to keep students in or out of tents. If my tent had flooded and my sleeping bag had been soaked through, I'm really not sure I could have re-warmed myself.- The pole system is elegant and very rigid. I spent several nights in winds exceeding 40mph and the tent barely shook. Especially when guyed out, this tent is rock solid.- The weight and packability are fairly good and more than worth it for the superior materials- This thing is roomy for a one-person. I'm over 6' and can stretch out completely without touching the tent walls. I can also sit up inside and change clothes/read without my head being cramped. It's also wide enough to where I was able to store most of my gear and clothing in the tent next to me, which was an advantage during those heavy rains and muddy camps- That being said, the vestibule is very roomy - plenty of space for my pack and extra gear- The gear loft pockets are very convenient for small items- The general aesthetics of the tent are excellent - classic MSR colorsCons:- I used the footprint on every occasion for extra protection. I do wish the footprint's rivets were designed to where the tent could be moved with the footprint attached (otherwise, when you pick up the tent to move it, the footprint just falls off and it's a pain to reattach)- The default stakes should be replaced with MSR Groundhogs. I do this with every tent. If I was MSR, I just wouldn't bother manufacturing any other stakes. The Groundhogs will save you some weight, they don't bend, and they're way stronger than the hook design.- While the colors look sharp, the white tent fabric does show every spec of dirt and mud. Some backpackers take pride in their gear looking filthy. I do not. They could replace the white with a grey that would hide more dirt.- Ventilation is fairly good, but it could be better with an additional fly vent or two.All things considered, this little tent is just perfect for the price. Serious kudos to MSR for designing a bombproof tent for all conditions.

Setup: The two poles being connected to each other is a little awkward at first, but once you get accustomed to it, the tent is really easy and fast to set up. I practiced it a couple times at home before taking it out camping and it was a breeze. Only takes a few minutes with really no hassle. The rainfly also is very easy to lay over the frame and secure in place. Not a whole lot of extra material to flap around either - I think other than the steaks needed to plant the vestibule, I only needed to utilize one other guyline in the back of the tent to really snug everything down.

Teardown: Packs up very easily and neatly with plenty of room in the storage bag. The material is pretty lightweight so everything folds up very compact. Careful not to bend the sewn-in vent supports though when folding up the main tent body.

Size: at 5'-10" felt perfect for me just a few inches each above and below and the same to the sides, it was very cozy but just enough room to sit up and get situated and change clothes. I was able to use my folding sleep mat that is like 30x72 inches and it was a near perfect fit. A few articles of clothing and my jacket ended up in the tent with me, but other than that not a whole lot of room for extra storage other than maybe a very modestly sized pack. That said though, I think if you really wanted/had to two small framed side sleepers who dont mind getting REALLY cozy could sleep fine in this tent, although this has yet to be tested. The vestibule was great for extra storage and privacy, but if you're planning on rain you'll definitely want to prop your gear up off the ground.

Materials: the poles are a really nice anodized aluminum and snap together with ease once you extend them out. The tent/rainfly/footprint are all lightweight but very high quality. The zipper, although YKK, seems kind of lightweight and small for the job. That was the only thing that worried me, but it did fine with no problems so far. I definitely wouldnt manhandle it around though.

Overall: very happy with this tent. Perfect size, easy setup and teardown, and good quality materials.

Bought this for my son, who uses it for car camping, summer camp (scouting) and scout camp-outs. This works great for these events. It's a bit on the heavy side for his backpacking trips.

Fairly easy to set up, the fiddly bit is the long poles, which want to spring back together when trying to splay them to the corners of the tent. After a few set-up and tear-downs, my son (in middle-school) is able to handle it without any help.

It kept him dry through some strong thunderstorms and seems to have adequate ventilation. He hasn't used it in the early spring, late fall or winter, although I believe it will work fine in 3 seasons. Winter might be a bit of a stretch for this tent- too much screen material.

The vestibule is adequate for his backpack, or a medium Rubbermaid bin of clothes.

Build quality is good as well. I've owned a number of MSR tents through the years and this is about average for those I've seen from MSR- definitely a few steps above the cheap tents, but not as nice as the high-end ultralight backpacking tents.

Very tempted to buy a second for myself.

In fact, this tent is not too light. With support poles, the weight will reach 6.6lb. The fabric is thick, waterproof should be good, the height and width are very suitable, there is enough space for one person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ottima!
Reviewed in Italy on July 24, 2020
