To make matters worse, Suzanne picks a very public fight at the local hotel with her former classmate Karen Kivas. Booked for Trouble is the wonderful second book in the Lighthouse Library Mystery series by Eva Gates. In book 2, Lucy gets an unexpected visit from her mother, Suzanne, who is trying to persuade Lucy to move back to Boston. Lucy continues to dodge her mom's attempts to guilt her into coming back home and back into a life she wasn't happy with as the story unfolds. Not only is Suzanne pressuring Lucy to leave the Outer Banks, she is also causing scenes with hotel employees that she went to school with - very public scenes.

When her classmate, Karen, is found dead outside the lighthouse the morning after a book club meeting, in which Suzanne also attended, all fingers point at Suzanne. As Lucy is trying to get a little more settled into her home and job at the lighthouse library, she now has to figure out who killed Karen and why. She knows her mother didn't kill anyone but as the evidence mounts and clues show up, Lucy must up her game to keep her mother out of jail for a crime Lucy knows she did not commit.

Lucy is a wonderful character. She may come from money but she doesn't act like it or flaunt her family's riches. Even with her mother in the Outer Banks, Lucy is still pretty down-to-earth and likeable. She doesn't put on airs or look at anyone as being beneath her. I love Charlene's continued obsession of rap music and her passion for wanting to share, especially with Lucy's upper crust mother. The love triangle possibility is still on the table and being explored but it doesn't overstep the death of Karen. I like how the romance is a subtlety that adds substance to the story without taking charge or undermining the death. All of the secondary characters are unique in their own way and believable. I enjoy both Connor and Butch's characters so much and know who I'm rooting for but you'll get no hints from me. Charles, the library cat is a delightful addition to the cast. I love that the library has a pet.

The story is well paced, enjoyable, and full of suspense. The author did a wonderful job describing the characters and scenery within the book. I was able to visualize the story as it played out. An enjoyable second book in the Lighthouse Library series, Booked for Trouble is engaging, doesn't divulge the suspect right away, and keeps the reader guessing. I'm really enjoying this series.

I read the first and second of this series right in a row and didn't get bored. They are enjoyable. I like that the MC doesn't actually solve the mystery but does end up involved in it each time. Makes her more likable. What I don't like is the pattern to far of having unbalanced people be the culprit. That gets tiresome quickly, so I am hoping the next one ends differently. And that the threesome starts going somewhere.

Sometimes I think that the author of this series, Eva Gates, read my mind and wrote these books just for me because I love libraries and lighthouses so much. Put the two together along with a great location and a few murders and it's the perfect formula for an all night read for me.

Lucy Richardson escaped her Boston society family and a fiance who was a bit too much of the upper class for her and started a new life as an assistant librarian in North Carolina's Bodie Island Lighthouse. It's the perfect job for her since she loves the beach, the casual feel of it and the lighthouse is both her workplace and her home. She and her cat, Charles, live on the fourth floor of the library in a small apartment that has become home to Lucy and that she loves. In this second book in the series, Lucy is quite surprised to see her mother come to visit her unannounced. Just what Lucy wanted! Her mother is bound and determined to convince her daughter to return to Boston to marry her ex-fiance, but Lucy has two potential love interests right where she is and where she plans on staying.

While there, Lucy's mother runs into a woman she went to high school with, Karen Kivas, and winds up in a major fight with her, harsh words being spoken. When Karen's body is found beside the lighthouse the obvious suspect that the police concentrate on is Lucy's mother. Lucy tries to help her mother maintain her innocence since she knows in her heart that her mom would never hurt or kill anyone.

Booked for Trouble is a very enjoyable cozy mystery with an extra bit of the mystery whisked in because of character Louise Jane's tales of the occult happenings in and around the library. Just an all around enjoyable book with delightful characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A REAL PAGE-TURNER - COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 6, 2017
OMG - what a gripping novel. I read it in one sitting - simply couldn't put it down.

Lucy, the main character, is Librarian (and tenant) of a library housed in an old lighthouse. When a member of her book club is done in, Lucy sets about uncovering the truth, a quest made all the more urgent when the main suspect is her mother (who's visiting). The story is a real page-turner because the author writes in such an engaging way that holds one's attention and makes you eager to carry on reading.

Readers who like gentle whodunits (not graphically 'grizzly' murders) will love this book, and if you have read Jo Dereske's 'Helma Zukas' series and are clamouring for something similar, this series (of 3) will quench your thirst. (Note: if you are expecting the library cat (as featured on the cover) to be part of the 'discovery' process, it isn't. Cat literally just jumps up on people's laps etc so doesn't really play any part in the book). I'm so glad the other two are on their way from Amazon as I write. CAN'T WAIT!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining mystery - highly recommended!
Reviewed in Canada on November 2, 2015
The setting for this novel - a lighthouse on North Carolina's Outer Banks - was enough to draw me in to the story and I'm so glad it did. Lucy, the librarian, is an engaging character with a talent for solving deadly puzzles. Having fled the stuffy confines of Boston and her parent's attempt to match her up with a less than enticing potential fiancée, Lucy's just getting settled into her new community when her mother descends and an old friend of her mother's is murdered. This is just the start of an absorbing mystery and entertaining read. You know you're in experienced hands when the writing flows so well you lose track of time - I promise, you'll love this book!

Réellement triste qu'il n'y ait que trois tomes dans cette série! J'espère qu'Eva Gates se penche sur son écritoire afin de nous en concocter un autre.
