    Much better than Apple for athletic and outdoors enthusiasts.
    5 Stars
    Much better than Apple for athletic and outdoors enthusiasts.
    Battery life, watch face size and configurations is phenomenal. I love everything about it except that I cannot respond to text on it. I can live without that more than I can live with a single day battery life of my apple watches.This allows me to travel and go places that are multiple days w/out bringing a charger. I can track fitness rides for as many hours as I like and not worry about the watch dying. This watch would dominate if it could take calls and respond to texts. It's already more valuable to me without those features.The pictures are with an additional glass screen protector over the face. I am very hard on watches and don’t want to risk it.

    So I purchased this lower model even though I had been eyeing the Fenix 7 Pro Sapphire, and I had previously come from Apple but recently switched over to Android when i got the Motorola Edge 2023.

    So far I love this watch. Here's my list of Pros.
    - It reads my heartrate regularly and fairly accurately
    - I get ALL of my notifications (Apple watch had a serious problem with notifications from certain apps)
    - I love the map features because I do go hiking often and usually don't have service where I go so having a GPS centralized map helps me figure out where I am going on trailless hikes.
    - Steps counter is pretty accurate though sometimes registers my arm movements whenever I play with my kids so I get extra steps.
    - Definitely waterproof as I have showered with it on, washed dishes, washed my car, this thing has been dunked in and soaked in water and performs as promised. I'm not a diver though so I can't attest to the depth other than in a pool.
    - Love the wrist awareness for when the light goes on. It's pretty sensitive so whenever I have to put my daughter down I have to take off my watch so it doesn't light up the room. It's pretty bright, so the "flashlight" feature is pretty great and works well in the dark.
    - THE BATTERY LASTS FOR DAYS. Even with heavy notification activity, I won't need to charge it for at least 3 days, and my watch will tell me for how many days the battery will last. I love that it learns your patterns too and adjusts the battery life accordingly.

    Cons! Not really much here honestly.
    - My only con is that the screen is not touch sensitive. You HAVE to use the buttons. But I suppose that helps to add to the battery life and reduces the chances of the screen cracking under pressure as the technology for a touch screen is different than standard watch glass.
    - The watch face store could have more variety that doesn't require you to PURCHASE the watch face. One thing I loved about Apple Watch is that it had SO may different faces and setting up the complications for the different faces seemed a bit easier and more streamline. Through the Garmin IQ app it can be a little confusing.
    - Updating can be a bit of a chore and I am a little disappointed that it doesn't come with a lot of storage space or upgradeable storage space. It really limits how many apps you can have.

    Other than that, so far, I give this watch a 5/5. It works great, it looks great and better than an Apple Watch (in my opinion I prefer circles to squares), it does what I need it to do and it does it well. Super happy with my purchase.

    I've debated what actually makes anything “smart” as opposed to a conversely “dumb” device.

    From my collection of watches I've gathered over a number of decades many of them will display: time (multiple time zones), date, stop watch, count down timer, altimeter, compass and temperature. Some may have a calculator (however without many of the other options) and a few may have a 'game'.

    Simply adding biometric sensors and fixed 'guesstimations' calculated from the data collected might provide more information to the user however can it be considered “smart”?

    While more and more portable and wearable devices gain more features and functionality is the sheer number of functions and uses what makes a device “smart”?

    If a device can communicate or receive/send data with other devices does that make it “smart”?

    The seemingly overwhelming difference between a “smart” device and it's “dumb” counterparts appears to be how much CONTROL the user has over the device in the customization of what the device does and how the device is used.

    Laptops, tablets and 'smart phones' may come with a set of 'default applications' installed however there are almost countless applications available to be installed on them providing nearly unlimited features.

    Rather “dumb” devices have fixed functionality from the factory and generally ZERO or very little customization available to their owners while “smart” devices may have some default functionality when it left the factory however the user is able to add/remove features/functions and customize the device to their liking and use patterns.

    Disclaimer: I own over ½ dozen different “smart” watches from various OEM's with various price points (MSRP). While the OEM's are calling them “smart” however I should mention that I'd consider only ONE of my “smart” watches is actually “smart” and all the others are simply 'feature' watches that have various numbers of features.

    The Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Solar is one of the ones mentioned above. (and NO, I don't consider it “smart”)

    Why did I purchase the Fenix 6 instead of a Fenix5 or the newer Fenix7? Mainly COST. I really could NOT bring myself to spend over $500 for a watch again and I was able to get the Fenix6prosolar at a %50 discount. YMMV.

    I'll admit that I've paid 2x the cost for much less functionality and 1/10th for many (not all) the same abilities. ('health trackers' with more biometric's sensors are a good example however are lacking many of the features the the Fenix has)

    Consider the Fenix as a combination of the following devices:
    * watch/time piece
    * activity & health tracker
    * portable GPS
    * smart phone companion
    * MP3 music player (~31GB of storage space and paired with earbuds/headphones!)
    ability to be paired with bicycle sensors (bike computer)

    Selling points for me are/were (in no order): the screen, UI, battery life, solar and level of customization available.

    Screen
    There are a number of screen technologies available and used in portable electronics. Namely: OLED, LCD and Transreflective LCD. OLED screens can be the brightest however they also require the most power & can't be seen unless power is applied.
    LCD screens require much less power than OLED's however unless they are 'transreflective' they can't be seen unless the backlight is activated. Which brings us to seemingly rare 'transreflective' screens that CAN be viewed if there is enough ambient light without activating a backlight. The 'drawback' of transreflective screens is that they can look 'grainy' because room between individual pixels is required for ambient light to pass through ('trans') so it can 'reflect' and light up the pixel.

    IMHO: Garmin portable devices have the best screens as they are easily visible in ambient light and use the least amount of power.

    UI
    The portable device market is flooded with devices that have 'touch screens' (TS) as well as buttons. One of the problems with TS is that they are BOTH to easy to activate (with sleeve or other items) and to hard to operate with gloves on or with wet fingers.
    The Fenix makes use of 5 buttons for everything (short press or long press) which can be operated with (or without) gloves, wet/dry fingers/hands.
    It should also be noted that many parts of the UI can be customized which can make operating/using the Fenix easier for the user.

    Battery Life
    I have not owned my Fenix long enough to really comment however the Fenix measures its battery life in DAYS while other watches measure in HOURS.

    Solar
    I have a few Casio watches that rely entirely on Solar. Hence they never need to be 'plugged in'. The 'solar' feature on the Fenix MIGHT help with battery life. It is to early to tell how much.

    Level of Customization
    The Fenix offers an almost industry leading level of customization for a feature watch. An added bonus is that the power/battery life impact of turning on/off different features is provided.

    While the companion smart phone applications are needed/required to get the most out of the Fenix, it is worth noting that a Computer with a USB2/3 port is a requirement for updating the Fenix as even though it has both Bluetooth and (oddly I might add!) WiFi connectivity a 'Garmin Express' application is required for updates and only runs on Win/MacOS computers.

    Conclusion:

    The Fenix6pro is a high end, top of the line feature watch that combines the functionality of many portable electronic devices into an attractive package that fits and is worn on a users wrist.

    Worth noting is the sheer amount of documentation that Garmin provides. Not only is there a very detailed .PDF manual there is a helpful Website and countless videos explaining the abilities and uses for this product. Surely an almost (if not) industry leading level of documentation!

    Thankfully I was able to find one at %50 discount as IMHO the MSRP is rather outrageous even for its features and functionality. While Apple, Google, Samsung (and others) may offer actual smart watches the Fenix can only be classified as a highly configurable 'feature watch' and ought to have a MSRP to match.
    While the expectation of a 'solar watch' is that it is able to get %100 of its power requirements from solar and even %50 or more might be acceptable however many/most reports are that the Fenix is less than %20.

    Really very disappointed with this watch, I wish I had returned it in the window that I had.

    For the Exercises it works really well and the GPS is great.

    Sleep tracking is not ideal for how expensive the watch is, which is a shame I was really looking forward to that feature. For I don't get very much sleep and was hoping for a look into how I could improve.

    11 days battery, bah not even close. A lot closer to 3. Even with being outside every day for work.
    I wish I could use youtube music as the default music app instead of Spotify or what ever else is the other one.

    For the price point this device needs a lot of improvement, i had to return it because of a few issues, one was the gps acting up after the update, the next issue was the course plotting, whenever i would plot a course and make sure it was what i wanted, id save it to the watch and when loading and following the course, it would have random points that were added to the route, i think its doing this because it is assuming you are a car and wants you to take the legal route. Lastly the buttons ruin it for me, after using samsung watches and their bezel, button pushing to navigate just isn't right, the buttons feel cheap and i wish they would do something to put on the rotating bezel for navigations.
    All in all this watch needs to improved if they are going to charge 820 to 1600 dollars for variant models.
