Awesome to quickly view negatives
So the pictures are literally where I used my cell phone to take a picture of the screen; I imagine if you actually save them they’ll be clearer. They’re definitely not perfect, but they enabled us to look through a large amount of negatives relatively quickly and determine which ones we’d want to send for print. To me it was well worth it :)

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2024
Size: Top ScreenVerified Purchase
My reason for purchasing the Magnasonic All-In-One Scanner was twofold: 1. the viewer screen was on the far side of the operating controls, and, 2. the process of inserting individual slides in a row and physically pushing them across the viewing window to perform a scan seemed to be less onerous than inserting a bunch of slides into a flat tray, viewing and scanning them, then removing the slides and stacking them. The single row individual scan process allows easier stacking for us simple minded folks.

However, the slide carrier design being a thin, hinged single row device can create a minor inconvenience. Slides being pushed into the scanning position by a follow-on slide may cause the carrier top to open and jam the slide moving into the scanning position. Over my bunch of slides this happened about a dozen times causing me to remove the tray, reposition the offending slide and continue the process. It's a very minor aggravation.

SD card capture and transmission into my computer worked flawlessly although I preferred to just use a SD card reader on the computer rather than hooking up a USB cable to perform the transfer. Since most folks prefer to enhance their photos on the computer the ability to change brightness and perform color manipulation on the scanner was not of importance to me although I did perform some brightness changes when necessary.

I would recommend this scanner if you want something reasonably priced and easy to use.

For the price, the scanner does pretty well. It is easy to use. However, the colors are not perfect. I have professional photo editing software that improved the color, but it still could have been better, if the scanner itself was closer to the true color. Now some negatives were very good, but a couple would not improve enough, even with my software. I wish I would have purchased a more expensive scanner. Keep in mind, however, that I used to be a professional photographer who developed his own color slides, negatives and prints! I was extremely picky!

I USED THE MAGNASONIC FILM/SLIDE SCANNER TO TRANSFER ABOUT 500 SLIDE IMAGES TO COMPUTER. HAVE NOT YET TRIED TO SCAN IMAGES FROM FILM TO COMPUTER. SCANNER IS VERY EASY TO USE.AND YOU CAN DO SOME EDITING ON THE SCANNER WITH RESPECT TO LIGHTING AND COLOR AND FURTHER EDITING ON THE COMPUTER. CONTACTED THE MAGNASONIC COMPANY TO ASK SOME QUESTIONS AND RECEIVED QUICK RESPONSE. VERY HAPPY WITH THE PURCHASE.

Was debating whether to purchase this vs a Kodak product and so glad I settled on the Magnasonoic based on Amazon reviews. As others have said, there is a brief learning curve (<30min) but really it's just getting used to the product. I did however find that having a computer , I used a Mac, with excellent photo enhansement built in made the level of satisfaction with the end result much more acceptable. In fact, I wouldn't have been satisfied without this capability. I didn't expect that I would find that, after enhancement, that the digital conversion would in so many many cases be better that the original slide. I have process several thousand slides and could not be more satisfied. I solidly built product that does not disappoint. I was somewhat hesitant to purchase at first when I saw that there was no Amazon return guarantee, but when I saw the one year warranty, I decided to take a chance. So glad I did. From my experience, I can't imagine someone being dissatisfied with this Magnasonic product.

This is a lovely way to quickly scan slides. I used a HDMI cable to connect the scanner to our TV and we could watch the slides as a family, then take a two-second scan to save the photo on the fly. But we noticed that the TV screen was buzzing with digital noise. And it wasn't just in underexposed slides. It showed up all the time—especially in areas of the photo with with continuous tones, such as the sky.

When you scan the photo, you also capture the noise. The photo of Ephesus above is scanned at the highest resolution. The second photo is a frame grab of the same image in opened Photoshop at 200 percent enlargement. You can see the pattern of the noise. I don't think this is the grain of the film. I also don't think this is artifact of over-compressing the image because scanner seems to save jpegs at the Photoshop level of 10 on a scale of 1 to 12.

If you're scanning photos to share on Facebook or Instagram, you probably won't notice it. But if you're scanning slides for the Ken Burns documentary on your life, you may want to try something different.

Most important to learn is that all slides should be placed in the slide holder in the landscape position, and not in the portrait position as the picture will be truncated in the portrait position. After capture in the landscape position, rotate the picture after transfer to your computer.
Also important to know that the slides should be placed on the slide holder with the slide number and date visible, otherwise the transfer will be upside down.
Would be great if there were a white "upside mark" on the slide holder so that when you're working in a dim lighted area or after working several hours and your eyes are tired, it is more readily apparent that you're inserting the slide tray correctly.
I converted my whole drawer of slides, over 2 thousand slides, to jpg files over a couple of weeks and it was certainly less expensive than taking them to a photo shop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great scanner for 35mm slides
Reviewed in Canada on February 8, 2024
Size: Top ScreenVerified Purchase
I purchased this scanner a week ago and I have digitized well over 500 35mm slides so far. In summary, this is a great scanner for scanning 35mm slides. It’s easy to use and the image quality is good.

The scanner comes with a 5V, 1A USB wall adapter, but if your end goal is to upload images to a PC you can leave the scanner connected to your PC’s USB port. I typically capture a batch of images to the scanner’s memory, upload to the PC, delete the images stored in the scanner and start again. I installed a 32GB SD card since the scanner’s 128MB internal memory only holds about 50 images. Captured images are named “PICTxxxx.JPG” so if you want to keep images organized by event, date, etc. you’ll need to work in batches. I wish there was an option to capture directly to the PC, where captured images could be renamed or tagged on the fly.

The 35mm slide adapter makes easy work of continuously feeding and capturing slides. I found that the best way is to have three slides in the adapter – one infeed, one outfeed and the middle slide being scanned. Pushing on the infeed and outfeed slides allows you to shift the middle slide back and forth to ensure it is perfectly centered before hitting the “Capture” button.

If your goal is to scan negatives, watch out! I tried scanning some 35mm negatives, but the film catches on the adapter outfeed slot and does not feed through. The plastic adapter has a slight step at the outfeed slot that catches the film. This is likely a molding defect, but it completely kills this feature.

The images on the built-in 5in LCD screen look good, but to really see detail I suggest connecting a PC monitor via the HDMI port. The addition detail visible on an external monitor allows you to ensure the slide is centered and you’re not capturing the edge of the slide frame. Even so, be prepared to do a lot of digital cropping to get rid of the occasional edge artifact.

On an external monitor the image sensor gaussian noise is noticeable. I was disappointed to see this, but it is not really a problem, just an opportunity for improvement.

The resolution spec. is misleading. The sensor is a 16Mp sensor (4920x3280). The scanner is spec’d at 24Mp, but this is achieved with interpolation. Pixel interpolation does not necessarily mean better image quality, but it guarantees a larger file size. I’ll let the marketeers debate image quality, but I did not see any significant difference, so I set the resolution to 16Mp (about 3Mp per JPG image) and left it there.
Once I established how to orient the slides, I did not need to use the vertical or horizontal flip buttons. The most common adjustment I needed to make was the brightness, and this is easy to do with just a few button clicks. Brightness adjustment just ensures no part of the image is saturating. After that, any remaining adjustments (tint, contrast, etc.) require image editing software on a PC.

The cleaning tool works brilliantly. Thankfully my slides are relatively clean, but it was very easy to clean the occasional bit of dust that landed on the scanner’s illumination pane.
.
Overall, this scanner is easy to use and works exactly as described. I am happy with this purchase.
