About the Author

Manuel Rodriguez learned the art of constructing a guitar firsthand. He started as an apprentice at the age of 13 in Madrid, where he first began to learn what makes a beautiful and resonant guitar. After apprenticing and operating in his own shop in Spain, Manuel immigrated to Los Angeles in 1959 and opened a business there. Residing in the City of Angels for nearly 15 years, Manuel made guitars for professionals, Hollywood actors, teachers, students, and those just wishing to express themselves creatively through music, before moving back to Madrid in 1973.

This is a great piece of writing aimed at those who want to get behind the mind of a luthier. Well worth reading and re-reading. It is not a how-to guide, but more of a behind the scenes look at the early 20th century Spanish guitar making culture.

This book should be on your shelf if you are interested in guitars as a player or a builder the reason's I only gave it 4 stars is that he is a little bit to heavy with self praise and most of all he virtually snubbed one of the great master builder's of our time and my hero
JOSE ROMANILLOS or maybe I am just a cranky old sod so there you have it cheers

Really nice, good price
Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2010
This book offered so much promise in both its title and the pedigree of its author. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to follow in that there seemed little logic in its chapter headings and subheadings. At times I wondered if the English version had gone through two translations, perhaps from Spanish to German and then to English. Many sentences were nonsensical and it was dotted with more literals and proofreading "misses" than a professional publication should have. I am a guitar-maker, although not with the international standing of the author and his family, and was eagerly looking forward to consuming lots of valuable information... however there was almost no usable information, much of the "information" was emotional and somewhat out of date. I would not recommend this book to either a maker or a player. Perhaps it may be of interest to a historian, in which case the title is very misleading. Bad buy.

This is not a book about how to build classical guitars, but a short history of the Rodriguez luthier family. It is interesting for the guitar aficionado, but the title is misleading

I thought I had read most all the books about the luthiers in Spain but this book taught me lots of new things. I met the author once and what a nice man. 5 stars from me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Introduction to the ideas of the Madrid School
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 24, 2015
Thorough introduction to the Madrid school and the main Spanish makers. Has a section on the Granada makers as well. Doesn't talk that much about the different construction systems, which would have been interesting, but is definitely a great read. Sr Rodriguez comes across as a really likeable and amusing character. His clarifications of guitar history are really interesting (Ramirez workshop days, etc.)
