Product Description

The Aether Plus 85 blazes the trail for those in search of a customizable, perfect-fitting pack. One of our largest volume packs with a stronger LightWire frame, this pack offers a stable carry that can manage the heaviest of loads. Dial in the perfect fit with a Custom Fit-On-The-Fly Hipbelt and Shoulder Strap and detach the top lid to use as a daypack for side trips. Constructed with high quality bluesign®-approved high-tenacity nylon and PFC-free DWR. The framesheet maintains comfortable back contact with ventilated airflow channels and maximum stability for carrying heavy loads while the mesh-covered foam lumbar creates supportive, lightweight and comfortable contact surfaces. The extendible hipbelt allows for incremental length and angle adjustments which adds a fine-tuned fit for varying waist sizes. The Crossbody ErgoPull hipbelt pulls the pack weight into the lumbar when hipbelt is tightened for a better distribution of weight and, in turn, a better carry. The Raincover is included.

I got this backpack to take on philmont scout crew, and was looking for something with a large capacity that could still fit my slim frame (5’9” 115 lbs). I also have a very small waist (27”) and found this to be the first backpack that properly fit me (albeit almost minimum size, but a fantastic fit nonetheless). The huge size made it very easy to pack quickly and the strong belt definitely helped make the load feel lighter. Not to mention the daypack topper being a very confining addition. The only downside I can think of is the positioning of the water bladder pouch being slightly hard to access when the bag is full. I can see this being my go to bag for many more trips!

This is a BIG pack (second largest Osprey makes) and loaded with features. Optimized to carry 40 -70 lbs, it's an excellent choice if you're spending several days on the trail or are a camping maximalist. Pockets and attachment points abound and are well thought out to provide quick access to frequently used items. Multiple compression straps allow you to cinch down the load. As expected from Osprey, materials are highest quality and clearly engineered by people who understand and use their products in the real world.

Every effort is made to maximize comfort and mobility while carrying a heavy load. The wide shoulder straps and hip belt have thick firm padding that maintains comfort over the long haul. The "AirScape" molded back panel provides excellent support while still allowing good airflow. The suspension system effectively transfers most of the weight to the hips and lumbar area. The are outstanding options for dialing the in perfect fit that are easily adjusted with Osprey's "fit on the fly" system. I recommend watching their videos on adjusting and fitting the pack before hitting the trail.

There are surprising complexities to this wearable wilderness technology. I recommend downloading the product manual from the Osprey website. Even that did not help with converting the "Daylid" top compartment into a daypack. The instructions said to attach buckles on the harness straps, but the harness straps on the daypack don't have buckles. I contacted Osprey via chat on their website and they provided me with a video on the proper way to attach straps by sliding a plastic tab on the end of the shoulder strap through a loop of nylon string on each side of the pack.

If you're planning on several days in the backcountry, this is probably one of the best packs available. Comfort, quality, features and design are all outstanding.

The media could not be loaded.
Osprey backpacks don't get much bigger or fancier than this Aether Plus 85. Eighty-five liters is a big pack. This pack is made for serious backpacking and is perhaps overkill for the multi-week canoe trips I will use it on. It's made for technical use--being worn for a full day of walking or climbing--and not for riding in a canoe. Yet its size and comfortable fit for portaging make if a fine, if somewhat fancy, pack for canoeing in the Boundary Waters.

Osprey is a classy maker of top-notch backpacks. I've owned half-a-dozen over the years, and every one of them has been durable and comfortable. This bag is a perfect size and configuration for backpacking across Europe (or wherever). I would have benefitted from having this pack the summer I traveled via Eurail around Europe. It's spacious, comfortable, durable and has a little top that can be taken off and used separately as a superb day pack. The main pocket is front and top accessible and it has several top zippered pockets for quick access to your phone, gps, etc. It also has a hydration pocket inside the pack with a hole through the back for a tube to drink from.

Osprey's Aether Plus series is differentiated from the older Aether backpacks by switching away from the custom moldable waist belt and "Anti-Gravity" system of the Aether to the fixed, heavily padded system of the Aether Plus.

This Aether Plus 85 also has three "Fit-On-The-Fly" attachment points. First, the back frame panel slides up and down, lengthening and shortening the pack's overall suspension system to accommodate varying torso lengths. Second, there is an on-the-go alteration to the height of the shoulder straps. Finally, the waist belt's padding can be pulled forward or made reduced depending on the waist size of the wearer.

There are other backpacks in the top-of-the-line range inhabited by this Osprey Aether Plus. Deuter makes the well-rated Futura Vario, but comparative reviews consistently rank Osprey at the top, or right there with the very best. Though I've not tried most of the others, I don't have reason to because I've been satisfied with every Osprey I've owned.

Wow! Osprey has thought of everything with this bag! To be honest I was a little afraid when I first picked up the bag in my hand because it felt heavy - that's before putting anything in it. But, as soon as I put it on my back it's as if the weight of the bag (6 lbs) disappeared! After making a few adjustments the bag feels custom sculpted to my back. The beauty is in the details with this bag. Everything is so well thought out and engineered. From the plush shoulder straps, to the rigid and ventilated back, to the seemingly endless adjustments for a customized fit. Love this bag and wish I had more occasions to use it.

3.0 out of 5 stars The harness system is tiny.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2023

I'm 6ft 1" large'ish frame, I'm slim & muscular. I bought the L/XL 85 ltr and its tiny on me, the waist pockets are inaccessible to me because they wider part of the waist strap is very short, and the shoulder harness cuts in to me because the top attachment of the shoulder harness is only a couple of inches apart.
When I put it on my Mrs was laughing due to the fact it looked like a child's school satchel on me.
BTW I do have other backpacks and I also use a Bergen, been using them for years so I'm not some clueless Noob.

5.0 out of 5 stars 長時間の登山でも重さを感じない
Reviewed in Japan on January 25, 2024
Size: Small/MediumColor: Axo GreenVerified Purchase
