The paper is glossy cardstock. While it has a glossy finish, you can use any kind of ink on it, from Sharpie (the easiest) to ballpoint, to water-based marker and fountain pen (give both of those a few seconds to dry before touching, because they’re more likely to smear before drying–but they both also dry quickly and look good--the paper is glossy but doesn't repel ink)

Is the string tied at both ends?

The current stock products are already tied at both ends, but they are also easy to untie, so you don't have to worry about it.

Will a sharpie smear?

We use a black sharpie and never had a problem. I would definitely recommend these tags.

What can these tags be used for?

i used this to tag several glass bottles which are in a padded container in my pantry (i live in earthquake country). I chose these tags so i could have ample room to write on them in large text. I wrote the item name or description (Avocado oil, balsamic vinegar, cooking sherry, etc) in a large font and put the tag on the neck of the bottles. Now i don't have to play whack-a-mole trying to find the rice wine vinegar on the bottom shelf (earthquake country, again) of the pantry. This worked out really well for me

These are basically pieces of fairly firm cardstock with some strings that allow you to attach them to things. That's basically it, as there's really not that much more to these.

They feel like a good quality, and are pretty sturdy. I'd use them for anything I wanted to label in a pretty calm environment. I'm not sure if they're hold up outdoors for instance, but I'm not sure they're meant to.
