Uses a bit of vertical space:
The issue for me was that the garage door was too tall and, even though I have a lot of space, which I think would be about 3', it was too little space and my garage door would hit the cargo carrier. Due to the design of this unit, it uses up quite a bit of veritcal space. Probably another 18" or so, in addition to the cargo box. Due to this, I ended up purchasing a more expensive, Teal Triangle unit, which probably stores the box about 8" higher (just a guess visually - I did not take a measurement), but I hope to keep this one and find another use for it since I think it's a great option. I may use it to get my bike rack off the floor.
The only other downside is that the rope seemed have a lot of friction when release it to the side, due to the lack of a 3rd ceiling mount for a brake.
Summary, this product is worth the price, and other more complex options have additional features, that can also be worth the price if you need those.
The mounting instructions could've been better, but I ended up mounting these two 2x4s which simply lay across a pair of the rafter ties. I got this kayak version thinking the straps might help, but also because the hooks looked stronger than the bike version.
Other reviews on these types of hoists indicate the rope starts to fray and suggest using paracord instead. I took the advice to heart and ordered 11-strand paracord, but to my dismay the locking mechanism doesn't work. I grabbed a thicker rope at Harbor Freight, but too thick and the hooks can't descend. I ended up using the original rope and while it may fray in time, I use my bikes sparingly enough that it may be quite a while til then.

After that simply attached to pulleys with the through bolts provided. Since the ceiling of the pavillion is pretty high, I ran the rope through as one piece, going through the pulleys as instructions describe but then threaded the bitter end back up through the brake and pulleys to knot it through the hole. I wanted to make sure there was wnough rope for the main system before cutting it. I then pulled 6ft of rope clear from the back pulley, cutting it with a rope cutting soldering iron. I used this 6ft to make the restrictor between the pulleys. The only issue I had was despite pre-drilling the first hole for the cleat, then screw snapped off at the head using an 18 volt Ryobi impact gun ( which I use for virtually every screw I put in anything). I used some Stainless panhead screws I had to put the cleat up.
The brake is excellent and makes it much easier to cleat off because you don't have hold up the weight of the kayak while cleating off as well as uncleating. You do have release one rope at a time to bring the kayak down until there is some space between it and the ceiling so you can pull the line downand a little toward the other pulley so the brake stays released. When it's up tight against the ceiling it won't release both lines at the same time. Pull on one line to keep the brake off while letting out the other line to lower one end of the kayak, Reverse the process with the other line. When it's got a couple feet of clearance you can lower both ends at once. The only concern I have is that the brake essentially pinches the lines against the pulleys so I wonder how this will wear the lines over time. The line seems to be decent woven nylon line so chafe may nerver be an issue.
I may get a few more of these to hang other things things like a tadpole trike. Well made for what it's designed to do, in my opinion. The only problem I could possibly anticipate anyone having with this is if they try to lift too much weight. It's for a kayak not an engine block.

For the instructions there are two issues. 1) It says to cut 6-10 feet off the rope so you can use it to tie the two hooks together. I have 9 foot ceilings, there's no way there would be enough rope for the hoist if I cut 6 feet off of it. Instead I just used some other rope I already had.
2) It says to cut the rope in half for the two pulleys. But one pulley requires way more rope than the other so I think this is just an error. However I don't think you should cut the rope at all. I left the entire rope intact, I just tied a knot on one end, threaded it through, then tied a knot on the other end. This makes way more sense to me.
The other thing I would like change is the design of the ceiling mount. It adds 3 inches to the overall height of the thing for no good reason. I'm bolting this into joists, I wish that bracket was just flush with the ceiling.
They designed it to accommodate different scenarios, exposed joists versus drywalled ceiling. However I think the product could still be flexible but offer a better solution for flush mounting. Between the joist bracket, the pulleys and the hooks I'm losing 1.5 feet of space. I would like the kayak to be tucked way up.
Last thing is the spacing of the pulleys. The instructions say to space them between 6 and 10 feet. I don't understand why they say 6 feet minimum. My kayak is short (10.5 feet). I decided to space them 5 feet apart and still I think the straps are further out than I would like. I may remount them 4 feet apart. That's fine, my issue is the instructions make it sound like it's bad to mount them any closer than 6 feet.

Die Montage war knifflig da ich den Lift in eine Scheune mit 3,60 Meter Deckenhöhe montiert habe, die Seile sind dann nämlich zu kurz,.
Der Lift funktioniert super!
