BOOK ONE OF THE BUTTERFLY TRILOGY

From
New York Times bestselling author Kathryn Harvey comes an arousing, passionate story of three women’s hidden desires and the place called Butterfly, where dreams are kept and where fantasies come to life.

Above an exclusive men’s store on Rodeo Drive there is a private club called Butterfly, where women are free to act out their secret erotic fantasies. Only the most beautiful and powerful women in Beverly Hills are invited to join: Jessica, a lawyer who longs for the days when men were men, and women dressed to please them; Trudie, a builder who wants a man who will challenge her—all of her—with no holds barred; and Linda, a surgeon, who uses masks to unmask the desires she hides even from herself.
But the most mysterious of them all is the woman who created Butterfly. She has changed her name, her accent, even her face to hide her true identity. And now she is about to reveal everything to realize the dream that has driven her since childhood—the secret obsession that will carry her beyond ecstasy, or destroy her and everyone around her.

"Butterfly
is a great read I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys a hot sexxy read with a side of revenge." —-Read Our Lips!

From Publishers Weekly

The pseudonymous Harvey's vivid, imaginative tale of a unique Beverly Hills brothel called Butterfly focuses on its wealthy founder, and three of her troubled female patrons. Discreetly located above an elegant men's clothing store, the brothel features costumed male "companions": a masked burglar, a Confederate soldier, a Versailles courtier, a cowboy capable of fulfilling any woman's needs and fantasies. Lawyer Jessica Franklin goes there for relief from her cold, intimidating husband; Dr. Linda Markus tries to cure her frigidity; Trudie Stein wants affirmation of her feminity. Behind the scenes is Butterfly's owner, Beverly Highland, whose harrowing life story is interspersed with the current action of the tale. Having run away from home in New Mexico at age 14 after being abused by her alcoholic father, Beverly succumbed to the rough-hewn charm of Danny Mackay, who put her to work in a squalid brothel and forced her to abort their baby. Vowing revenge, plain Beverly attains beauty through plastic surgery, becomes an affluent California entrepreneur and cunningly plots against Mackay, now an influential TV evangelist and presidential candidate. Glamour, wickedness and passion spark this highly commercial novel, which builds to a dramatic and unexpected conclusion. $75,000 ad/promo; first serial to Cosmopolitan; Troll Book Club main selection.

1st time I read this book I was in my late teens. I'm now in my 40's & have read it several times & I swear it was the 1st book that I have reread. I have since reread other books, but this is the first! Fabulous book! I reread it every few years! Subsequently I then reread Stars. (Shouldn't read Stars without reading Butterfly)
Butterfly is a revenge story, I don't want to give it away so I'll be vague. Man does woman wrong, woman plots revenge....flash backs & "present" brings it together fabulously! Stars is similar in the writing style. Another book Private Entrance should not be considered as part of the set (although for some reason it is so they call it a trilogy) it has absolutely nothing to do with Butterfly or Stars. I will leave a separate review for it but don't let that stop you from reading an awesome book! FYI there are intimate scenes in the book but (in my opinion) tastefully done.

Dang, I love this book.

This is erotica FOR WOMEN!!!! The story is great and well-plotted and it's verrrrry sexy.

I read this when I was in eighth grade (oh, thank you, local library used book sale!) - THIS IS NOT A YOUNG ADULT NOVEL!!! - and I've never forgotten Beverly's journey. She goes through a lot of crap, meets people who exploit her and people who support her. And man, does she RISE.

This is not a romance novel in the classic sense. There's no white knight and Bev is no damsel in distress. This is a romance for modern women - about a woman in love with her life, her strengths, and her sexuality.

It may not be in the pantheon of great feminist texts but Butterfly showed me what healthy sexuality looks like (and what unhealthy sexual relations look like, too). That's invaluable for any woman.

Butterfly  by Katherine Harvey is a very entertaining read. I loved following the development of various female characters from women with little self-worth to fully integrated women. For some, vengeance is the catalyst; for others, it is the acceptance of self, with all its imperfections. Very tastefully, Harvey attributes this acceptance to having good sex with a partner whose desire is to please rather than be pleased. What woman cannot relate to that!

But Butterfly is more than titillating. The characters are richly developed. The plot, entwined with mystery and secretiveness, keeps the reader guessing what will happen next, and, at the end of the novel, wanting to know what happened to the beloved characters. Fortunately, Butterfly is the first book in the trilogy. I can't wait to see what happens to the characters in the subsequent books.

Loved the story the first time I read it but it was long enough ago that I forgot much of it so it was a pleasure to read again. A very good plot with lots of twists and turns. Surprises all the way to the last page. Well written and I highly recommend.

I read this book in the late 80's and was reminded of it when 50 Shades of Grey first came out. So when I saw that I could get Butterfly for my Kindle and get the second book in the series for free I knew I wanted to re-read it. I think I enjoyed it even more as I have gotten older. The concept of having a place like "Butterfly" just inspired me as a true fantasy. There really isn't a lot I can add to the review that hasn't already been mentioned. I loved the description of it as deliciously trashy. I liked the character development and watching the protagonist do her thing. She proves the saying that whatever doesn't kill us makes us strong.

I should begin by saying that going into this book, I thought it was published in 2005 & was a contemporary romance. As I began reading, it became evident that this was not a story in that time period. I then found it was originally published in 1988. The many references in this book definitely made sense in that context but it became a bit of a distraction because there were so many brand names mentioned that are no longer "high end" (Lear instead of Gulf Stream, Pierre Cardin, Members Only, etc) or even recognizable. Furthermore, it didn't set the time in the way a story by Bret Easton Ellis can or more to this genre Ruth Harris, it just felt like it was pushing "wealthy L.A. in the 80s" in a heavy handed way with all the name brand dropping.

I found the first chapter intro to be very compelling because you don't know who has died or who the woman who put it all into motion happens to be. I thought the mystery/revenge set up would get going much earlier on but instead we go back & forth in time getting to know the main female characters. While that was somewhat interesting, I found that it was mostly tedious because I wanted to get to the mystery. The main women we follow have all been on the rough side of relationships with men & other life circumstances but they excel in their professional lives & so seek liberation & freedom in Butterfly. I am a fan of stories of empowered women & certainly love stories where women take charge of their own happiness but none of the characters were very compelling in the long run. There was nothing new here & nothing that will stand out as revelatory or have lasting impression.

This may well have been an edgy story when it was originally published (what with women running & patronising the brothel) but by today's standard, it is quite tame. There's nothing sexually graphic or kinky here. And there's nothing wrong with that but I wouldn't even say there was anything in this book that felt like it belonged in "romance". It is a broad chick-lit ensemble where the b-story revenge plot is the most interesting thing going on (but that takes some time to get around to). Don't go into it looking for more & it should be a satisfying telling. If you're looking for a romantic & erotic story of a woman patronising a brothel, pick up Robin Schone's "The Lover".

This is definitely a book that caught my attention because of the cover & its blurb about being sensual & romantic but in the end, that's just a great marketing strategy to reissue this book to new readers hunting for a sensual, romantic read. That is fairly brilliant to sell books but it's disappointing as a reader when that's not what you get. This is the first in the Butterfly Trilogy but I don't have any desire to read the remaining installments.

Roman très bien et écrit et énigme passionnante. Très sensuel à lire. Mais j’ai préféré un autre livre qu’elle a écrit, Les Vierges du Paradis.
Cependant je vais définitivement racheter des livres de cette auteure 👍

5.0 out of 5 stars Book from the eighties but up-to-date- nevertheless
Reviewed in Germany on August 15, 2017
I enjoyed reading this book very much as it reminded me of my youth and all of our limitations: no constant entertainment, no cellphones, no planerides but slowly getting somewhere by bus, only emotions, love and hatred, are the same.

Two stories are told in turn, Beverley's from age 14 to now aged 51, and those of three friends, Trudie, Linda, and Jessica, in the present which is the 1980s. The first tells how women are used for men's entertainment, the later how women use men to fulfill female dreams. The first is full of revenge( she builds an empire to destroy another) and suspense, in the other you get women in the 1980s looking for love who face the same problems women have nowadays in male dominated areas: equality in the construction business, workload as a doctor, no appreciation from her lawyer husband for her accomplishments as a lawyer.

As there are no dates or names as captions of the chapters it was difficult to distinguish which time or head we were in that reduced my reading pleasure.

You always have to keep in mind that the present in the book are the eighties.

My sister had this book when it was first published and it was passed around all her friends and well read. I really enjoyed it then but sadly the hardcopy has been lost over the years. When I found it was available for my kindle I jumped at the opportunity to own a copy myself. The storyline had lost none of its escapism, intrigue or excitement that I'd remembered. I have now gone on to download the other other two books in trilogy and throughly enjoyed all of them. Damn good holiday ready, couldn't put it down.
