After that, the scope is perfect. Adjustments were accurate. Scope holds zero with normal use. I haven't really banged it around, but I wasn't surgically gentle with it either.
Shoots true to zero from 2-4 power. Image is clear in flat light. Crosshairs are easy to pick up. They are not super thin for long range shooting. You need to spend $1k more for that. This is great for typical hunting distances.
Initial Impression. Out of the box, it was immediately apparent to me that whatever company actually constructs these doesn’t have even the most basic standards. The rings were torqued in place, as though it were “drop-in”, but they were on backwards, the gaps weren’t even, they weren’t radially aligned, and weren’t spaced for a picatinny rail - a byproduct of being assembled by a seven year old in China no doubt, as the sticker on the bottom proudly proclaims. The rings also seem to be made of pot metal and the finish is shinier than the scope body. I’ll use them for the duration of my evaluation, but they’ll eventually get thrown into a fire or under a train.
Glass and reticle. This isn’t a true 1 - 4 power, it’s a 1.3 - 3.9, which isn’t a big deal to me, but if you shoot both eyes open at 1 power, you’ll notice the image distortion and shift. The glass clarity is actually quite nice, but it does have an obvious yellow tinge to the image even though the lenses aren’t coated, so this indicates a poor quality of glass. I like the reticle. I originally had a red dot on this gun, so this is a really cool way to compromise between a crosshair and a dot - it’s a duplex crosshair with a circle, great for fast shooting or maybe on a shotgun. I like it, it’s fun and fast and easy to use. I’d like to shoot it more to see if I can use it for drop compensation, but that’s not a priority and nothing I would call a negative if I can’t.
Knobs. The knobs are literally THE WORST - the tiny little finger tip turn thing, hate them. I guess I like knobs I can grip. And knobs that do what they say (1/4” should mean 1/4”). And adjustments to which you can return. They have audible and sensory clicks, I like that, but there’s a good amount of gear lash between clicks and going up 8 clicks and back down 8 clicks is almost always not the same place. The best way to use cheap knobs is to be turning in (clockwise) against spring pressure. If you need to adjust the knob out, say 4 clicks, adjust out 10 and come back in 6 or so until you’re where you need to be on target. This scope does not like to be adjusted once it is set but it keeps adjustment if you leave it alone.
Why Choose This Scope? I’ll be honest, this scope isn’t very impressive. The price allows a lot of forgiveness since the bar is set pretty low in the sub-$100 range. But looking around, you’ll find that there aren’t a lot of 1-4 or 1-6 power AR-style scopes in this price range. Barska, UTG/Leapers, and even brands I’ve never heard of. You need to spend about $300 to get a name brand scope. TruGlo stands out because it’s a recognizable name in a budget range.
Final Thoughts. I complain a lot and I’m snooty, but overall I just can’t bring myself to dislike this optic. It has a whole handful of shortcomings if you’re comparing it to a Nightforce, but among $100 scopes, it actually holds its own pretty well and delivers what one can expect in this price range. It’s durable, clear, cool reticle, low profile, low power range, and low priced. And it doesn’t weigh much. i actually enjoy using it (once it’s zeroed) and it is living up to my expectations of it nicely.
