Useful and compact
The Teal Skyes Hand Auger Wrench with Wood Piece for Leverage and Scotch Eye Peg Maker is a useful and compact tool. To test the auger, I chose a piece of birch wood that had been seasoned for six months. The tip of the auger is quite sharp and bit into the wood with ease. I used the included wood dowel to thread through the Scotch Eye for leverage. The wood dowel was considerably thinner than the Scotch Eye, but usable. Ideally I would choose a slightly thicker and longer piece to use. It took about ten minutes to create the hole you can see in the photo. Not bad when you consider that I am a 67 year old woman with arthritic hands. The weld between the auger and the Scotch Eye is slightly defective, but it did work to create a peg that fit into the hole. I wish I had a photo of that, but my husband accidentally tossed both pieces into the wood stove before I took a picture! The leather strip with Velcro closure held tight around the auger to protect my fingers while making the peg. I did notice that the cutting edge of the Scotch Eye was somewhat deformed after using it, so I’m assuming it’s not hardened steel. I think it’s still usable, but am not sure how long it will last without needing to be resharpened. I will keep this tool in my emergency kit as it will still come in handy in a pinch.
