Early Sly before the hits, but a great collection in its own right. I bought this after buying a used vinyl copy of 'Recorded In San Francisco: 1964-67', which shares/repeats three tracks ("Life Of Fortune And Fame", "I Can't Turn You Loose" and "Take My Advice"), at a sidewalk sale for $1. I thought "I Can't Turn You Loose" on my vinyl was scratched (even after repeated cleanings) because of how a line of verse seemed to "skip", but the version on this CD sounded exactly the same and proves it was just a poor edit during the mixing. "Life Of Fortune And Fame" was sampled by the wonderful hip-hop group The Roots on the title track of its 'Game Theory' album. Both 'Family Soul Sessions' and 'Recorded In San Francisco' complement each other and are a must have for fans of Sly. For the vinyl heads, I've seen 'Family Soul Sessions' pressed on red vinyl and packaged in a clear plastic sleeve. Came across it at a Virgin Megastore before they all closed. It was reasonably priced (under $20), but I passed due to my skepticism since it was before the hits and I wasn't familiar with the content. Didn't want the cool package if the songs were lackluster. However, the CD proved I passed on a good thing and nice collector's item. Peace.
