I'm a long time user of Iomega zip drives. My first computer had an internal 250MB zip drive installed in it. Over the years I've built up quite a collection of zip disk with files stored on them. I bought the external zip drive so I would still be able to access all of those files with my new computer.

(...) My new PC uses Windows Vista as the OS, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was no need to install the driver that was supplied with the zip drive. Windows Vista knew what to do with it soon after I plugged in the USB cable.

The external version is noisier then the internal dive I used for so many years, and it also takes longer to write to, or read files from it. However, the product has been trouble free so far, I've had it a couple of months, and I would recommend it. There is newer technology out there that is both faster, and has a greater storage capacity, but the 250MB zip drive has performed the task I bought it for with no problems.

Does anyone even use zip drives anymore? The media disk that came with it only has 250 mb of memory, which when I bought this in 2002, was a LOT of storage. I have a few other zip disks, as well, filled with data. With flash drives able to hold TBs (or more!) of data these days, the only reason you would need a zip drive now is if you had stored data on a zip disk, and wanted to access it. Luckily I kept my zip drive, as I had used it to store genealogy research on a zip disk back then, and now I've got family wanting to see the info I found. So the Zip drives do come in handy if you've got data stored on media that only these drives can access. You can either transfer saved data to a newer computer with more storage space, a flash drive, or if no zip drive is available, take them somewhere and pay to have the data transferred to updated storage media. 11 years later, when I pulled it out of the big box of old tech toys, the Iomega Zip Drive still works like a charm!

This product was purchased to upgrade from an earlier USB ac-powered version (1.0). Installation was straight forward and completed without a hitch.

I encountered a problem with the new drive reading disks previously formatted on my old system. Drive would chatter loudly and only seldom display contents of the disk after many attempts.

I eventually discovered my problem. My old system was a FAT 16 and my new computer system is a FAT 32. I hooked up both old and new Zip drives to my computer with appropriately formatted disks in each one. I then explored the data on the FAT 16 formatted disks and then saved the data to the new FAT 32 Zip drive.

Everything is now working fine and I expect the new drive to perform as rock-solidly as did the old ac-powered unit. It will be used as a backup until all previously saved data has been converted to FAT 32.

The new drive appears to be much faster--which is certainly a "plus"--and there is also the absence of one ac adapter plugged in to the surge protector!

Tried to load this on 3 different machines each running a different OS. Only one OS (Win VISTA) recognized the device but I could not do anything. I could not access my zip tapes or eject the tape.

Update to my review below (7-3-2010): I bought this zip drive a year ago and just recently got around to copying all my zip disk data to a different media (flash drive). I copied about 25 zip disks and as I inserted the last disk to copy, it started making a clicking noise and wouldn't read my disk. I did some research and found out that people call the clicking noise the "click of death," meaning the zip drive has broken! The good news is that unlike my experience below, I was able to get my disk out of the drive. Below is my review from over a year ago. I stand by it my statement to buy and use a different storage or backup media.
*********************************************************

Like some of the other reviewers, I bought the original 100MB zip drive in the late 90s, which featured a serial port or parallel port (not sure which one). It was awesome.

But then a few years later I got a new computer that didn't have the port I needed to connect the device. IOmega told me they didn't have or recommend any adapters and that I'd have to buy a new zip drive. So I purchased the IOmega 250MB USB drive.

I didn't use it much at all. Maybe 10 times?? I got it out the other day to download some stored files and I got all sorts of errors. Then the device wouldn't eject my disk. I looked on the Iomega support site and followed their troubleshooting tips to no avail. The site said if none of the tips worked to call support. I did, and since my unit was out of warranty, I had to pay $25 to talk to someone. After getting connected they said that if their posted troubleshooting tips don't work for getting out disk, the unit is broken. They said it was out of their scope and against company policy to tell me how take apart the unit to get my disk. So I asked, "You mean to tell me I paid $25 for you to tell me the device is broken and you won't tell me how to get the disk out??" I was ticked. After I asked to speak to a supervisor, my $25 was refunded to me.

I broke apart the device with a screwdriver (not easy, by the way) to find that the ejection mechanism was made out of the flimsiest and most brittle plastic I have ever seen -- like the mechanism was designed to break. Which it had. Plastic utensils are made better. I was able to get the disk out. (Hint: The ejection mechanism is on the belly of the device and hardest to get to.)

Anyway, so now I have to order yet another zip drive so I can transfer all my data to another medium, then I will kiss my zip drive goodbye.

I had a iOmega SCSI Zip Drive connected to a FireWire to SCSI adapter connected to Power Book G4 /Mac and iOmega SCSI Zip Drive connected to an old Apple IIGS computer this computer would be totally obsolete if I didn't have a SCSI Zip Drive to connected to it. I have several SCSI Zip Drives I got refurbished years ago when they stopped making them just in case. I use this setup to transfer files between the two which would be impossible without the Zip Drives. I got the Zip 250 USB cause my FireWire to SCSI adapter failed to work after a little more then five years of use and I have a lot of 100MB Zip disks. I use it on the Mac side and it works well. Also useful for transferring files between the Mac and a PC. I give it a four star cause it writes slow but it reads faster then it writes and its compatibility deserves five.
