    Product Description

    From the Manufacturer

The 7.2-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W80 camera captures the magic of life with an advanced Bionz processor that powers new capabilities like Face Detection, in-camera retouching and red-eye reduction, D-Range Optimization, and 9-Point AF. The Sony Double Anti-Blur Solution combines Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization with high-sensitivity (ISO 3200) shooting to capture sharp, clear low-light images without flash to preserve the mood -- and the new HD output lets you share memories with spectacular high-definition clarity and impact on compatible HDTV screens.

    Cyber-shot DSC-W80 Highlights

7.2-megapixel Super HAD CCD More megapixels give you more detail and definition when you make big prints or crop in tight on your subject. The advanced Sony Super HAD (Hole Accumulated Diode) CCD design allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise.

Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens A top-quality Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens design helps the DSC-W80 bring distant subjects closer and lets you frame shots quickly for better composition -- a real advantage for family sports, outdoor fun, and travel photos.

Face detection By automatically controlling focus, exposure, color and flash, this new Sony feature reveals faces in shadow, makes skin tones look more natural and eliminates harsh facial glare -- to help bring out every expression on every face in every shot, so you’ll capture the personalities and emotions that make memories come alive.

The Sony Double Anti-Blur Solution With Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization and high sensitivity (ISO 3200), the DSC-W80 compensates for shaky hands, minimizes blur, brightens images, and allows flash-free shooting to preserve the mood -- with Sony Clear RAW Noise Reduction to take care of the picture noise that can ruin low-light shots.

HD output Thanks to Sony, your photo album can go high-def -- with direct HD output to compatible HDTV screens, so you can view DSC-W80 still photos in spectacular high definition clarity and detail. Your life never looked so exciting!
Note: HD output requires an optional Sony HD connector cable; HDTV sold separately.

HD slide show with music It’s the high-definition viewing experience that makes photos come alive on compatible HDTV screens, accompanied by your choice of visual effects and any of four preset musical selections stored in memory or your favorite MP3 tunes downloaded from PC to your camera for use as background music.

9-point auto focus Because an off-center subject can make your shot more interesting, the DSC-W80 can measure auto-focus precision at 9 points on your screen -- giving you greater creative freedom to compose your image.

D-Range Optimization Powered by the exclusive Sony Bionz high-speed processing engine, D-Range Optimization preserves image data in bright highlights and reveals more detail in shadows or backlit areas -- for great results even in difficult lighting conditions.

In-camera retouching The DSC-W80 lets you add creative effects to photos after you shoot -- including soft edge filter to soften backgrounds, cross filter to place starry "dazzles" at highlight points, partial color filter to mute surrounding colors, even fish-eye filter to create interesting fish-eye lens effects.

In-camera red-eye reduction Irritating "glowing eyes" can ruin even the most creative photos -- so the DSC-W80 provides in-camera correction at the touch of a button to reduce lingering red-eye effect that other systems might miss.

Large 2.5-inch LCD screen The DSC-W80 provides a large, bright LCD screen for composing shots, checking results, sharing your photos on location -- and an optical viewfinder allows shooting in traditional rangefinder camera style.

Simple setup controls A touch of the Home button opens your user-friendly GUI -- and you can select functions by simply moving a cursor vertically or horizontally to the appropriate icon. Function names and the on-screen Function Guide display make it easier to learn camera setup operations.

31 MB internal memory The DSC-W80 allows you to capture a large number of images without a flash memory card, so it’s great for traveling or for quick candid snapshots.

Memory Stick Duo Media convenience A built-in slot accepts optional Memory Stick Duo media or Memory Stick Pro Duo media -- the compact, high-capacity storage media that make it easily to upload photos to your computer or make lab-quality prints at home on your Sony Picture Station digital printer (sold separately).

14x Smart Zoom feature The Sony Smart Zoom feature intelligently "crops into" the central portion of interest in your photo, avoiding the image degradation of other digital zooms.

MPEG Movie VX Fine Mode Captures VGA (640 x 480) audio/video clips at high frame rate (up to 30 frames per second), with length limited only by the capacity of your media.

Stamina battery power The DSC-W80 provides up to 340 shots with a fully charged NP-BG1 Lithium-ion battery -- enough shooting capacity to cover a long weekend or a whole vacation.

Picture Motion Browser software Supplied software makes it easier to upload, organize and search photos on your PC -- and provides a convenient map view function to sort photos by location and display their origin on a world map by using an optional GPS unit.

    Great for the price
This is a great camera for its price. This might be the best choice for its class because it provides IS (image stabilization for shaky hands and moving objects:anti blur), 2.5 inch lcd, 7.2 megapixels and 3x optical zoom for under $235. You can find different cameras with IS and with more pixels or zoom capabilities but you should also compare their price with this one. I researched alot before buying this camera and could not find any camera with IS under $300 (brand new, not used). Morover, this is very handy, tiny and light that you can carry in your pocket without feeling it. There are cameras out there with 10x optical zooms but you have to hire someone to carry it for you:) I will always prefer a tiny camera over a bulky one because those bulky ones are usually loaded with features that you will never need or use. Additionally, those bulky cameras are also much more expensive. You would end up paying high prices for features that you will never use.I recommend you to buy at least 2gb of memory from e-bay.Buy from someone with high feedback score. I purchased a 2gb "high speed memory stick pro duo" for $20 (incl shipping) from e-bay. As time passes, as in every technological toy, you will be able to find cheaper and better.Menus and settings are very easy and clear. Information about the current settings appear on the lcd when you switch or push buttons for example when you switch mode dial to moon (one of the symbols on the dial) "Shoot low light scene without flash" explanation appears on the lcd for about 2 seconds which is very helpful.I wish you could have been able to charge the battery while its in the camera but you cannot. You need to carry the included charger if you are travelling. Carrying a cable for charging instead of a seperate charger would be better. However, battery life is very satisfying and better than its competitors. One of my disappointments about the camera (actually it is not a big deal) is you need to press too many buttons to delete an image. This is only case for deleting an image. Other menu shortcuts are great; however, I wish it had also a shortcut or a button for deleting since this is a digital camera and the great thing about these cameras is the ability to erase easily. My previous camera (Dsc-v1) had a button for erasig images on the menu buttons which was very easy and helpful. But with this camera, I had to press 5 times (on different buttons) before I can delete the last image taken.Overall, this is a very great camera for the price and features. One of the most important adventage is its IS (Image stabilization) feature. One of the best alternative for this camera is Canon PowerShot SD800 IS 7.1MP, in case you do not like DSC-W80, which you can buy around $300. Since I purchased Dsc-w80 for $230, I recommend sony over canon.

I had the Sony DSC W50. It worked well for its portability purpose. However,I dropped it on concrete. It still takes pictures, but there's no zoom. I bought the DSCW80 to replace it, mainly because the DSC W80 price came down the the DSC w50 price went up. I also chose it because all the W50 accessories would work with it (case, battery, memory, charger). I like the W80 much better. It is easy to use without having the manual as a constant companion. The ISO low light capability is MUCH better than the W50. It can take pictures that are brighter than the room itself. As usual, the lower the light, the grainier the picture. However, pictures come out fine with a decently lit room. There is some lag time between shots, but that will not have much impact on the way I photograph. The camera is very portable, can slip in a shirt pocket (beware of bending over), and takes great pictures. I'd have bought this camera in the first place had it been available at the time of the W50 purchase. I was able to take clear shots in low light with the stabilizer feature. The W50 shots were usually blurry in low light (no stabilizaton). Note that blur will occur in low light when photographing moving objects.

For the price, this is a great camera. Easy, light, fast, and a good battery. I use it mainly to shoot candid shots of friends and capture scenic views of the cities I travel to and it works quite well for that! It has a lot more options on it than I will probably ever use...or will take the time to learn. So I stick mainly with the basic automatic functions and have played around with a few others. I've found that it's very self-explanatory and for the most part does exactly what I want it to do. I really like the ISO setting for low light. The only two really irritating things about the camera are that the power button is located too close to the shutter button and then sometimes I turn the camera off instead of taking a photo. The other is that during movies, if there is a lot of white glare somewhere, pink stripes will show up all across that area. I didn't read anyone else having this problem in other reviews, so I'm not sure if it's a "normal" problem or not. Oh and the software for downloading photos is nice, the red eye correction function is a bit sketchy and you can't edit any of the movies with it :-( But overall, I'm extremely pleased with this purchase and would highly reccommend it.

When I open the Amazon package I realize that the Camera box was open, cause Sony seal were broken. First, I check that all accessories, manuals and CD are on place. Then I follow the instructions to set the camera on. I put the battery charging but the battery already was full; Second I set the battery in the camera and I realize that some photos were taken from a guy and a family. Then I check the photos' date I, there were taken on December , I took some photos to see if the camera works OK and then clean the internal memory. Until now I've take around 100 photos and the camera works OK.
So My concern what it happens if I bought the item from Amazon, not from a reseller. So it is annoying that this kind of event happen in Amazon. Any clue what happened?

I'm an over 60 female and was shopping for my 3rd digital camera. I was looking for a camera that was compact, easy to use and took great pictures. The DSCW80 is all that and more. My hands sometimes shake, especially when I get tired, and the image stabilization in this camera completely solves that problem. The LED screen is large and easy to see, yet unlike most digitals, I have a viewfinder to fall back on in situations where I might have difficulty seeing the screen well. Great for these tired old eyes. Best of all, unlike my previous cameras, this one offers many features while being very easy to use. I don't have to wade through numerous menus to get to the most frequently used adjustments. This camera is everything I had hoped for and more.

I bought this camera because I was taking a trip and I would be attending several concerts and I wanted to capture the moment. This camera took great outdoor shot and has an awesome landscape feature, combined with the zoom I was able to take great shots while in a moving vehicle. During the concerts I wish the pictures came out a little better. The low light setting was a disaster for me everything ended up red. However, overall it is a great camera for a non pro like me. I love the dial which gave me easy access to the menu features and the fact that it tells you on screen what each feature is used for. This camera had a great feel to it. It wasn't to small or big and bulky. I purchased the silver one, but it also comes in different colors which makes it very fashionable.

I can't say enough good things about the Sony DSCW80, but I'll mention 10 features that I've been particularly pleased with:
    1. In "fine" mode you can snap images that will print with great detail up to 13" x 19".
    2. With a 4GB ProDuo card you can shoot almost an hour of very decent video, with sound.
    3. The image stabilizer works great.
    4. Shutter response is very fast and works particularly well in continuous shooting mode.
    5. Auto Exposure Bracketing (which allows you to shoot the same images at three different exposure settings) is a wonderful feature that is usually available only in much more expensive cameras.
    6. Battery life is excellent and charging time is reasonable.
    7. The mode selector provides brief on-screen explanations as each mode is selected.
    8. The camera has a view finder (which is invaluable when the sun is shining on the LCD screen).
    9. The camera includes shutter-click and other useful sound effects.
    10. The flash is well-synchronized and it can be manually calibrated to provide higher or lower flash intensity - a great feature!
I could be describing a camera that costs $1,000 and weighs 2 pounds, but the DSCW80 offers so much in such a tiny, low-cost package - it's just amazing!

I bought this for my father-in-law. He loved it, but the camera froze up after about 5 months.
It had to be returned. It was still under the one year warranty. The replacement works fine.

If you like a larger display screen, this is not it. Check out the T-100 or newer T-200.
