Better, but nowhere near where it should be for the money. It will do the job, but just barely.
4 Stars
Better, but nowhere near where it should be for the money. It will do the job, but just barely.
These work OK, better for me than the Wolverine Pro, but not by much. I did not have film feed problems like the Wolverine Pro, nor did I have to shove paper in the film track like Wolverine suggests to "get it to work". That being said, aside from being made as cheaply as possible to maximize profits, the biggest problem with all of these is they ignore established film industry standards from lessons learned a century ago: use 3 (THREE) pawls on the tractor to move the film! A single pawl (see photo - the little metal tip in the dark rectangular hole on the right) will make the film stop moving when it hits a damaged sprocket hole - DUH! That is why movie projectors standardized using 3 sprockets to move the film, not to mention it takes the stress off of a single hole, so you do not make so many damaged sprocket holes to begin with. For the price they charge for these, there is no excuse for that. Wolverine Pro is the same. Combined with their film jamming problems, I sent that back. All things considered, you are only going to use this for a few days and be done with it. If you have a lot of film to do, it works out cheaper to buy it, but plan to babysit the thing (all makes) to get the job done.Unless I find some more old films in the closets, I am done with this thing. I should try to rent it out or sell it to recover some of my money and make the price more reasonable. All in all, these things do a good job. I am happy with the results. They take individual photos of each frame, so they are slow, but they do work well. If you have a lot of films to do, this can be cost effective to use. If you only have a few films, you should take them in and get them done. Although expensive, for a few films, the overall cost would be less per roll than buying something like this.

This unit is easy to use. It's lightweight and of simple design. Loading film is simple. Run time is slow at 2 frames per second, so 34 minutes to do a 3 inch reel, but that's to be expected for any unit. Picture adjustment is easy for color and frame settings. Picture quality is 1080p but it looks slightly grainy with the sharpness setting at default for low lighted scenes. I turn it down then adjust later when post editing of the clip. The white balance setting is auto and can cause some weird color changes on certain scenes as the camera makes it's own adjustments. I wish I could just manually set it.

The recorded session is saved on an SD card you plug into the unit, and converted as an mp4 file. Unfortunately you cannot set a time of file creation so that's always as January 1st. Now and then, my machine will make a loud crunching sound, then quits, but I am not sure if its the film pulling hard or the unit itself internally.

I use the usb connection to import the files to my PC to then later to edit color and to add titles and such. However, for simple and quick conversions, this unit does a pretty fair job to yield a finished mp4 video file that can be played back on any mobile or PC device.

I watched YOUtube videos on this Kodak unit and other brands, and this model was give the better of the reviews. All in all, this is a much better way to convert 8mm film than trying to use a cellphone or camera setup. It's also much cheaper then sending off your films, and quality, as I have read about, is much the same you would get if paid for services, and you have control of your films and video editing at your desire.

I had another converter of a different brand and it was a horrible machine. I bought the Kodak brand out of desperation. I spent a whole lot more, but it was worth every penny. I have literally 500 3.5 " reels to convert and wanted to use the machine before I posted a review. The Kodak machine lives up to its name. So easy to use and the quality of the final raw footage is top notch. I wish I had bought this machine before wasting money on the other brand. The Kodak digitizer is a beast. I can't say enough good about it. Don't waste your money on a cheap knock off brand. Spend the extra and get something you'll love too.

Pretty nifty piece of equipment. I'll share a brief list of the pros and cons at the end of my review for those who don't have a lot of time.

How it works:
This digitizer works in an interesting way. It does not play back the film in real time. Instead, it takes a single picture of each frame of the film automatically at a rate of 2 frames per second. It then turns those pictures into an MP4 video file at a frame rate of 20 FPS. This means the time it takes to digitize your film is 10x as long as the film itself. A 3 minute 8mm film takes 30 minutes to digitize.

It is fairly quiet. I am quite impressed with its ability to automatically line up the film in the center of the frame as well as its consistency in keeping the video stable! I also appreciate the versatile camera controls. You can adjust the video up, down, left, and right and zoom in or zoom out to get your film pretty darn close to perfectly aligned. The picture quality is decent, but quite grainy

Loading the film is fairly easy if you find a video online. The instructions do a poor job of explaining for new users. I did find that I had to babysit the digitizer during the process. At the end of my tapes the film would not always come off the reel. The digitizer would attempt to keep moving. I don't know what the risk to the internal mechanics or to the film are, but to be safe it is best to keep an eye on it when it is close to done and press it a second or 2 early as there is a delay to stop it.

There are a few things that I would like to have seen done better with this. The biggest problem is that this works well as long as your film is in very good condition. I have had several films that were spliced or repaired at multiple points, and the digitizer snapped the film at those points almost every time, leaving me to have to stop the digitization, repair, and continue where I left off.

Addionally, there is not an easy way to clean the backlight without stopping the digitizing process. I had a couple films drop debris onto the scanner which causes a black spot in the video. I then had to stop the process, open the film tray, and be very very careful while taking the film out. It is not designed to allow you to pull film out unless you are at the beginning or the end of a reel.

Pros:

- Excellent camera controls. Includes adjusting the frame up, down, left, right, zoom. It also allows you to adjust exposure, sharpness, and tint.

- Once your recording has finished, it tells you very clearly what the file has been named. For example "Your recording has been saved as "movie 0001"."

- Your film is automatically centered in the frame and is very consistent at keeping the image stable.

- Decently quiet, almost satisfying to listen to.

- It allows for rewinding when finished by taking the reels off and switching sides. No need to keep the film wrapped around all the tension knobs while doing this!

Cons:

- It does not digitize in real time. It takes pictures of each frame automatically at a rate of 2 pictures per second. The videos are exported as an mp4 video file at a frame rate of 20 FPS. This means the time it takes to digitize your film is 10x as long as the film itself. A 3 minute 8mm film takes 30 minutes to digitize.

- There is no easy way to clean the rear projection light mid-digization

- There is not an easy way to remove the film mid digitization. You risk damaging the film. It is safest to remove the film at the beginning or the end of the reel

- If your film has been spliced or repaired previouslt, it is quite likely to rip the film, requiring more repairs. However! Any time my film snapped, it happened after it was already scanned, which was nice. This works best with prestine quality film.

- I would strongly recommend babysitting the digitizer during the process in order to stop it if it snaps film and when the film reel is done, as my film did not always fall off the reel when finished. The motors still attempted to keep pulling the stuck film

- Decent image quality, but quite grainy!

- Instructions are poor. I recommend looking at some videos of others using it before loading your reels

First, this is incredibly easy to use. Second, love the viewing screen. HOWEVER, the BIG miss is that it does not capture the images clearly.

I previewed my film on my projector. The film was significantly clearer on my projector verses the digitizer. I played with it a bit and noticed that if I tightened the film so that it went through the digitizer more taut, it was as clear as my projector. This is a big miss for Kodak. I clearly cannot sit and hold the film taught frame by frame. Super disappointed.

Returning it and wishing there was another manufacturer that provided a better quality digitizer.

I had a lot of 8mm left over from the 50s and 60s from my dad. I watched a few YT videos first and decided this was the one I wanted. Simple to set up and use and the picture quality is excellent. The only caveat and not the fault of the camera, is my brother spliced a lot of the films and gave no consideration as to the frame alignment. IF you want this to work correctly for you and your splices are not correct then you have to stop the capture after the splice and reset the frame capture area. This creates a "new" mini-dump in mp4. IF you have simple small reels with no splices it will work awesome. For me I will have to add the captures back together later in SW. NOT the machines fault. Buy a little air squirt bulb to blow pieces of old film that will flake onto the censor. Don't try to brush it with something physical and scratch the CMOS lens surface.

Don't waste precious time or money on anything else. I bought an Eyesen (same price range), which apparently is made by Wolverine (Eyesen is on the chassis, but it said "Wolverine" on the screen every time I fired it up) - it was absolute garbage. Returned it and got this one. Night and day. Better picture, less wow and flutter, nicer screen, fewer resulting files to work with since it glitched less on things like splices. Much nicer, more stable machine. Fun to use, as opposed to frustrating like the other one. Only negative thing to say is that the rewind motor is kind of week so it rewinds too loosely and sometimes film falls off the end of a fuller reel - but this is not a big deal. Have now redone all the films I did with the first machine. Happy with the results now, just sorry I had to do it twice. Take my advice and do it right the first time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Kodak Reels delivers on its promises

I researched having my 8mm film converted online by a service. It was very expensive and I finally decided to purchase the Kodak Reels converter to tackle the job myself. It was extremely easy to setup and use. I was converted film within an hour after opening the package. The quality is acceptable for what it is. You can probably do better from an online service that is using better equipment. However, the price I would have paid to do the amount of film that I had to convert with a service would have been at least 3 times the price of the machine. So, the strategy that I have adopted now is to convert everything first with the Kodak Reels, and if it is good enough, then I'm done. If I think it might be worth paying for a higher quality, then I will send those particular reels off for a more professional conversion. There was a lot of footage shot on the film that I had to convert that really wasn't that good, so I'm glad I didn't pay a premium to convert it. Like I said, this gave me the flexibility to get a good enough copy, and to identify what I wanted to go to the next step with.
