My wife and I recently took this on a trip with us and used it to plug in to the TV in our hotel room and absolutely loved it. We brought along some TV seasons and movies. Too often when traveling we were at the mercy of what was on TV in the area and at the time we turned it on, had to watch commercials, and really missed our DVR. This was great to watch TV on our own terms while traveling. I had no problem plugging it in using the AV connection cable provided and remote to watch.
I have only two minor complaints. First, it only remembers where you left off for one disc and only while the disc is still in. If you remove the disc and reinsert it, it will lose its place. Compared to my normal Sony DVD player which remembers the last 5 discs inserted in case you swap between a TV series and a movie, or if you take the disc out to put everything away like me, then you have to remember where you left off. I wish it would remember at least the last disc if you were to reinsert the same disc again. Second, it doesn't realize the AV cable plugged into the audio out port and audio through the built-in speakers as well as the TV. You just need to turn the volume down to off on the DVD player to remedy that. You can also plug the AV audio cable into the headphone port as an alternative, but you could end up with some amplification or quality loss by being controlled by both volumes, but you probably wouldn't even notice.
The battery ran for a long time for us. We kept it charged over night because we never knew if the next time we would be by an outlet or for how long. But we always seemed to have a lot of battery life. We did use it for several evenings connected to a TV without a power outlet accessible. Without the LCD or built-in speakers running, it probably runs longer. We have used it during a power outage for its LCD screen before too, which worked fine. But it is never the same as our 52" TV screen.
We absolutely love this. The only thing I would change is having it remember where it left off beyond removing the current disc.
The features that drove me to decide on this player is the ability to fold tablet style, touch sensitive panel for controls (instead of buttons), inclusion of a remote so I can control the player from the front seat while my child can enjoy his program(s) uninterrupted in the back seat. The battery on the player last a great long time (I have thus far used it on battery power for about 3 hours and the player did not cut off). I can not say enough good things about this player, perfect size, great controls, clear picture.
One piece of information related to using the player for mounting, not an attribute of the actual player though, is that it can be easily mounted in a vehicle with just using a very short (around 8-10 inch) bungee cord. I purchased a companion third party bag mount for the unit (http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-PDVK-10-10-Inch-Portable/dp/B000P17188/ref=pd_sim_e_3); however, it ended up being useless as a mount an marginally sat for a carrying case, so I found it easier to use a bungee cord placed in between the player screen and the player unit where the disc are inserted with the player folded tablet style, and then each end of the bungee cord attached to the head rest rails. The player had to be position so that it was wedged slightly on the top of the back of the set with the bottom of the head rest contacting the middle of the back of the player so it didn't slip; but this set up ended up working great. I just shared this part of my experience to be cautious of which type of mount and carrying case you get and a give you a DIY jerry rig method that I employed in case you want to try it.
This player is excellent and I would recommend it to any families with young children who take vacations or long trips.
Also, for those who do not drive a luxery car with a sound-proof cabin, this unit has exceptional speakers. It comes with a nice remote so you can adjust the volume in case your passenger decides to turn it too loud. The unit also has a removeable battery pack. Since Sony does not seem to offer additional battery packs for sale, I do not see the use in this feature.
The only thing I do not like about this unit so far is it is bulky and heavy. It's 31.75 oz (or almost 2 pounds). I know that does not sound like much, but when you have to pack other stuff (especially for travel), you would expect this portable unit to be lighter. The unit is a little on the pricey side, but the overall quality justifies the cost. I will be sure to update this post IF I run into any quality issues that others should be aware of. So far, my 4 year old daughter loves it, and she's taking great care of it: She learned from her previous experience with the cheaper Dynex portable DVD player that I bought for her 1 year ago.
