I bought this because I wanted a Wacom tablet that was medium sized (because the small Intuos tablets have a writing area the size of a postcard), but I didn't quite want to pay $200 for the US version.
As far as I can tell, the hardware that comes with CTH-680/S3 is more or less the same as the CTH690AK, or at least, the stats that I have found online are the same. It has the same pressure sensitivity, resolution, multi touch, size active area, etc. The tablet's 4 buttons are laid out differently, but the pen you get is better because it has an additional button for an eraser. I suspect the hardware underneath the shiny tablet exterior is exactly the same.
The main difference between the two is who the intended consumer is. The CTH-680/S3 is intended for a Japanese consumer which means most of the papers that come in the box are in Japanese only (although the manual comes in English, Japanese, Korean, and whatever TC and SC are), and the version of Clip Studio Paint Pro that you get is in Japanese. I tried downloading the English version of Clip Studio Paint Pro, but my key did not work. I emailed their tech support to see if I can exchange my key for an English version key, but they declined.
Realizing I had the key to the wrong version of the paint software was a little disappointing, but it doesn't matter. From my perspective, the difference between this and the CTH690AK Intuos Art medium is (currently) $40 and Corel Painter Essentials. Corel Painter Essentials 5 (currently) costs $35 on Amazon, so if I do decide to buy that software, I'll be ahead $5. In the mean time, I'm experimenting with free open source paint programs like Krita, and MyPaint.
Also, the usb cord that plugs into your computer is about 3 feet long. Make sure you get a usb extension cord if that's not long enough.
I love this tablet, I swear by it!... The only complaint I have is that I have to keep registering it every time I use it, I don't know why this happens but that is my only complaint. Great Tablet, but I little too difficult with installation.
The product did not come with a Software Bundle Download number needed to register and set it up. The software license key was invalid and clip-studio would not accept it. The website provided is in japanese - it's a lot of work just to get it working. My daughter and I are still trying to figure it out and may have to return it. It's frustrating!!
