Pros
+ There is absolutely no lag, despite the Bluetooth connectivity, neither for the keyboard nor for the touchpad
+ It looks very good, just like a regular computer keyboard
+ The pairing process took only a couple of seconds and never had to be repeated
+ Waking up the keyboard after not using it for a while takes only a second too. I always forget to turn the keyboard off but I guess the auto-off feature is good as well
+ It has all function keys that the Magic Keyboard lacks
+ It’s still working with the initial battery charge it came with, after three weeks of daily work, so the battery seems to hold pretty well
+ The backlit keys
+ The possibility to modify the keyboard light intensity and the different light patterns. Some are too colorful and don’t look professional at all but I guess it’s nice to have the option, even if I myself won’t use those patterns too often (I take rather the same blue for the whole keyboard)
+ The 2nd gen Apple Pencil fits perfectly. It’s well protected and always charged.
+ To think that, with the money I saved by NOT buying the Magic Keyboard I was able to buy the Apple Pencil, two new iPad chargers for the spots in my home I mostly use my iPad in, a USB-C hub with lots of connectors, a screen protector and I still have almost hundred bugs left, is AWESOME!!
Cons
- As a whole, it’s a very light case, which is very nice. On a desk, it’s very nice to work with. At the same time, if you want to work with it on your lap or in bed, you have to hold it with your palms so it doesn’t tip over when the viewing angle becomes greater because of the weight of the iPad itself. An extra weight would be of use, but then it would be heavier as a whole. I guess it’s a difficult compromise between both facts.
- The touchpad is very sensitive, which is good too. But it causes that sometimes, while typing, you touch it and the cursor jumps to another position. I guess some sort of “palm recognition algorithm” would be needed here, as with the iPad itself. I guess with time I’ll learn to separate my palms some millimeters from it and not touch it but it can be annoying at times, like when you’re not looking at the screen
- With the case on, you can easily connect the USB-C charger the iPad comes with. On the other hand, the connector for the USB-C hub was a bit larger and wouldn’t fit in, as will probably happen with many hubs. I solved it by widening the opening with an scalpel. Perhaps not the most professional solution, but it worked. A bit bigger hole would have been nicer
- I haven’t found any “nice and easy” way to take the iPad out of the case, for example, when I want to fill out a formular. I have to push the iPad out by pressing the camera module, which I have to clean sometimes after the procedure
- Related to the above, if you want to keep using your iPad in “tablet mode” as often as you plan using it in “PC mode”, I guess this might not be the best case. It’s the only use case I have found where the Magic Keyboard is better because with it you can easily decouple the iPad from the case as it’s magnetically and not mechanically attached
I was in love of my Logitech keyboard for my 9.7” 1st-gen iPad Pro but this is even better... :-)
Alright, so a little background here… I bought my iPad Pro 2021 on launch day long before I had plans on starting a YouTube channel… Well, fast forward to 2023 and I ended up starting one.
After wishing I had went with an M1 Mac instead, I decided to do a little research. The Magic Keyboard was definitely not going to work at that price. So I looked at the aftermarket keyboards. I specifically wanted a clamshell style keyboard that was stable on my lap. Something that literally imitated the experience of using a laptop.
This was the only case designed in such a way. All of the other options including some real expensive options were not even close to being a clamshell-like design. This is a game changer for me. Especially for the price.
This keyboard case is very well-built at such a low price, that I was pleasantly surprised. One of my main concerns were how well it would hold the iPad Pro upright. As with an actual laptop, the weight is all in the base of the machine. I was pleasantly surprised that it holds well. My only complaint is the angle of travel could be a little extra. But you need to keep in mind that the weight is up top so I understand how that would be a problem.
The keyboard feels like typing on an average 13 inch laptop. Almost as good as a MacBook Air but not 100%. The trackpad isn’t the best design but it definitely is usable. I think the issue lies more in how iPadOS handles mice and trackpads. Lastly, I wish there was an option to keep the keyboard backlighting on all the time as opposed to on only when using.
But for the price? It’s better than I expected and saved me from having to buy another device. The ultimate test to a keyboard is being able to touch type on it. It took a little getting used to being used to full sized keyboards. But yes, touch typing is possible on this keyboard!
Overall, I hope you found this review helpful.
