***NOTE: I am not a professional photographer, just a hobbyist.***
I can’t believe it took canon this long, but they’ve finally released the EF-M portrait lens everyone’s been asking for, and let me tell you, they knocked it out of the park.
The images it produces are extremely sharp (especially above f2.0) have a nice creamy bokeh, and focus is very fast on my EOS M100 and M50. It is approximately as sharp as my EF-M 22mm, with the 22mm being ever so slightly sharper in my test photos. I’ve seen some easily corrected chromatic aberration wide open, but less than my Sigma 30mm f1.4 Art lens.
The minimum focal distance is quite short, but maxing out at f16 macro work is a little limited (clearly not the intended purpose of the lens).
As for heft and “manuverability”, it’s quite light, but heavier than I expected it to be, given the amount of glass contained. It sticks out approximately 2.5x as far as the EF-M 22mm (see photo).
I bought this to replace my faithful Sigma 30mm f1.4 Art lens, since it’s so bulky with the adapter. This is about half the bulk and a third the weight (see photo). In use, it is just as sharp, and faster to focus. The 2mm difference in focal length is negligable.
Overall, a great lens for a great price, and this will likely replace my 22mm as the lens that spends the most time on my EOS M cameras. I just wish it had come out 4 years ago.
Edit: OH and not necessarily of importance beyond aesthetics, this lens has a super neat looking deep convex front element. The 22mm EF-M does as well, but this one’s about twice the diameter so it looks really cool. Not that it should affect your purchase decision.

El complemento ideal para la Canon M5
Como fotógrafo aficionado que utilizó durante muchos años la Canon AE-1 con un objetivo FD de 50mm, puedo decir que por fin Canon nos ha dado el objetivo equivalente para usar en sus cámaras mirrorless de formato APS como lo es la M5, ya que con este lente podemos aprovechar las funciones automatizadas de la cámara sin sacrificar alguna como sucede cuando se usan lentes de cámaras análogas adaptados para cámaras digitales. EL lente tiene una muy buena luminosidad y nitidez que permite tomar fotografías en condiciones de poca luz o escenas nocturnas sin elevar exageradamente la sensibilidad ni el tiempo de exposición. En el ejemplo que añado a esta reseña la sensibilidad fue de ISO 640 con una velocidad de obturación de 1/60 y una apertura de diafragma de 1.4 en modo P sin necesidad de usar un trípode. Si se compara el precio del objetivo con el de la versión más nueva de la serie M, es casi el 60% pero vale la pena si eres un aficionado como yo que busca tomar buenas fotografías (bien enfocadas y bien expuestas) en sus viajes o recorridos por la ciudad.

I have several EF-M lenses. I'd rather use them for my M50 than an adapted EF or EF-S lens, which totally defeats the small form factor of these little mirrorless camera bodies.
The EF-M is bright, fast, and tack sharp. At f/1.4, the lens holds its own and produces a shallow depth of field - that until now, was painfully lacking in the other EF-M series lenses. The 32mm is larger than the kit lens, and certainly larger than the 22mm, but its still nicely compact. Equivalent to a about 51mm on a full body, this little lens makes for a great "normal" walk-about lens. It feels good, works smoothly, and captures beautiful images. Like many of the Canon lenses, there is just something about the ergonomics that works.
I am not a pixel peeper, but this lens does appear to be sharp corner to corner, with some minor chromatic aberration wide open. This is easily correctable in post-processing. I don't judge lenses by shooting test charts and crunching mathematical solutions. I judge lenses by the life they bring to an image. In this regard, this little lens delivers. The images are similar in quality to the EF-M 22mm, another fantastic lens.
This was the lens for which users of the M series were waiting. Worth the wait.
