The pad for my Boy Scout needed to be tough enough to survive a tall teenage boy learning to take care of his equipment. He has used this pad for only 10 days so far, and it has done a great job for him.
Neither of us put the pad inside our bags, and the pad stayed under us anyway.
Well worth the money spent. Had no problems at all. After the first use in the morning it was still inflated, but a little soft, we assumed from first time use stretching, and we added literally only 1/2 a breath. This lasted until the end of our 10 day trip. We did not deflate each night but left them inflated. The air held the whole time, which I was amazed about. I thought that we would have to add at least a breath from time to time, but we did not need to.
I am thrilled to get my hips off the ground, with something that will to pack up small in my pack to give me more room, and very light weight. I am trying to lighten my pack weight and spend as little $$ as I can, and yet still be able to get equipment that is good enough to accommodate my aging body out in the sticks.
My Scout wanted an air pad that was comfortable and tough and small and light weight because he likes to have nothing in his pack, so he has lots of room for other things and he does not want anything attached to the outside of his pack. This air pad was perfect for him.
We live at 6,000 feet and camp out usually above that. The nights are cool, or cold, all year round, and the ground is above freezing but not really warm. This pad has worked great! and has allowed us to reduce down to one 15 degree sleeping bag without an extra layer to insulate against ground effect. We have not yet tried to use this pad directly on the snow pack, just on non-snow covered ground.
Cons:
This pad is pretty quiet, but not the most silent. We have been on plenty of louder/noisier pads, and a few quieter pads that were a whole lot more expensive. I would put this one somewhere in the middle-ish pile.
We tried this pad out as a kids sleepover bed. The kid stayed on top of the pad, but on the carpet this pad walked/schooched itself about 14 inches sideways during the night where as the other air pads we had did not. Was this the kid on top moving differently or the air pad? We do not know. The kid did not care and used it for the next 2 nights anyway.
When we have more than 1 Scout with the same pad (yes we have more than one Scout with the same pad), it is hard to know who's pad is who's come pack up time. This could be partly solved with some choices in colour availability.
- It took me eight - (8) - breaths... to inflate! And I didn't have to reinflate for the 7 night outing! I can't tell you how many different air mattresses I have dealt with while camping over the years (air pumps/reinflate every night/fight to roll over/noisy...); How can this little "bubble wrap like" mat be more comfortable, lighter, quieter, and remain inflated(?), I don't know but it does.
- It was not invasive in my "two man" tent (lol, two man if that's the only thing in it).
- Small ungulating terrain under the bed site was not a big deal, the mat helped fill the voids and smoothed it out; didn't spend an hour trying to smooth the ground out = good thing.
- Super small and super light weight, a good night's sleep can compete for limited pack space any day IMO.
- The size was just right for me.
- The air moves about between the cells and kind of adapts to your position, very comfortable, and I was surprised that I woke up without pain. I actually looked forward to going bed vice dreading it.
Shortly after my first use, I went to Colorado for a 8 day camp trip. My flights got delayed due to weather which left me at a gate in the airport over night... I was so wishing that I would have put this mat in my carry on vice checked bag, I could have easily found room, because trying to sleep on the airport floor without it was futile, the mat would have been PERFECT.
- Fast forward to the Rocky Mountains; hiking, fishing, camping.
- Setting up camp, my family had various air mattresses or cots, LOL, waiting for the battery powered air pump, searching for new batteries... not me, this time it took me nine (9) breaths (elevation) and my bed was made, and again I didn't put another breath in for the duration. Slept great, didn't wake up sore, and didn't make a bunch of noise when moving.
Bottom line, I'm extremely happy with this product, have told my fellow Marines, friends and family about it and will be buying one for each of my three imeadiate family members for camping; so much more efficient and comfortable than a giant air mattress. So far I am very impressed with quality, ease of use/ convince, and comfort... Especially for the price point. Highly recommended.
