After working with this keyboard for the last few weeks, I've grown to really enjoy using it. So much so, that I decided to purchase this particular keyboard for my personal use at home.
The keyboard arrived packed really well and double-boxed for protection. It did have a slight plastic odor when removing it from the plastic bag inside the secondary box. Reminiscent of the plastic smell associated with some children's toys? At least that's what came to mind when I noticed the faint smell. The keyboard is a softer plastic than the brands I personally own, so let's get that out of the way.
At home, I have an Apple Magic Keyboard, a Macally Premium wireless keyboard with the number pad, and a Logitech K380 wireless keyboard and I prefer the BTO over them. I enjoy the tactile stroke of the keys and the audible clicking when typing at a decent pace. It's almost an ASMR thing for me.
It's an extremely lightweight keyboard that is sturdy and able to resist spills and food debris, not that I plan to test this. It is a USB-wired keyboard, there is no Bluetooth on this particular model, which isn't an issue for me. This is a great keyboard for a family computer or if you have younger children.
This has become my favorite component to my personal desktop setup, and funnily enough, it's the least expensive item out of all my other higher-end brand-name components by a significant amount.
For under $10, this is a hidden gem. If this keyboard lasts me 2-3 years then I'll have gotten more than my money's worth. I'm seriously thinking of buying at least one more, as I've grown to enjoy using it on a daily basis.
There are a few things that I think may put some people off from purchasing this keyboard.
1: The soft plastic feel of the keys and keyboard. If you prefer high-end components or are accustomed to particular brands, you may not like the feel of the keys. They aren't too soft, but if you are familiar with Apple products or Logitech you will notice a difference.
2: The keys are elevated, depending on the type of keyboard you use, but I did notice that they are higher than the standard keyboard.
3: The adjustable tabs at the back and rear of the keyboard that raise the height and angle of the keyboard may not last if you are a heavy typist. If you pound the keys hard, I can see where the tabs may eventually flex and warp.
4: The tabs at the back of the keyboard do not angle the keyboard enough to be noticeable, at least not for me. I would prefer the keyboard to be at a higher, more forward-facing angle since the keys are set high, but that is my preference. I may have to find something to place under the back of the keyboard to angle the keyboard more forward.
Will this keyboard work for you? I can't honestly say. Do I prefer this over my $100+ Apple keyboard, my $50+ Logitech keyboard, and my $70 + Macally keyboard? Yes, without a doubt.
Now, nothing against those brands or keyboards. My Apple keyboard is over 10 years old and just now the J key is starting to stick, hence the purchase of the Macally and Logitech. I do like the Macally and Logitech very much, they are fantastic keyboards with excellent build quality, responsiveness, and excellent tactile feel when typing.
For some reason, I'm drawn to the BTO keyboard. Whether it's the audible clicking, the softer plastic, the raised keys, or a combination of all those factors, who knows? I just find it comical that this $10 keyboard is probably my favorite desktop component.
If you're willing to risk the $10 I wholeheartedly recommend this keyboard.
