I bought this Toshiba DVR610 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo because it can also play AVI files which my older LiteOn LVC-9016 couldn't. So far this was the hardest to install to work properly, neither the long manual nor the included short one contained the connection that made it work for me! My TV is an older Toshiba 32A13 and I have a Time Warner digital cable box. I struggled for 3 days until both VHS and DVD had picture and sound and I could also record and dub, convert from VHS to DVD! First when I tried it with the Component cable which the LiteOn used, it could play DVDs with sound but the VCR part didn't work, so I changed finally to RCA cables, it had first a picture but no sound on both, only after adding an extra set of RCA audio cables, it finally worked! The LiteOn manual is 36 pages long, Toshiba's is 126 pages, the remote of the LiteOn has 39 buttons, the Toshiba has 49! I have installed a while ago a Samsung DVD only Recorder for a friend which was also a struggle but not as bad as with the Toshiba. The best and easiest Function and Usage Menu has the LiteOn LVC-9016 Recorder and I miss it very much!Read full review
I bought without a remote and it us useless without unless i wanted to just watch videos. The picture would blank out avery few seconds. I will try a head cleaner to see if that will help. My rating is based on a used device and mu not be typical to another.

I've only had it for a few weeks, and I'm not really sure how I feel about it. For one, I'm not sure if it is working correctly, what I mean by this is, it will not allow the DVD player part of it to function unless you put a VCR tape in first. I'm really not sure if this is normal or not. Once you put a VCR tape in, the DVD player works just fine. All in all, provided you place a VCR tape in it first, it seems to work fine. I still need to get more familiar with it, but from what I have learned so far, it does do an excellent job of converting VCR tapes over to DVD, and so far, they play well in other players after being finalized. Generally speaking, for the price I paid, it seems as though I got a fair product for a fair price. I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying this unit, but you may want to look around and perhaps buy a model that has a few more options, like High Speed Dubbing. I don't believe this one will do it, at least I have not figured out a way to do it yet. I would give it three stars out of a possible five stars. That could change as I get to know the features it has to offer, better.Read full review
I bought this unit to dub my old VHS tapes to DVD, after about 10 hrs of use it developed a high pitched whining squeek/grind, which became progressively worse. Manufacturer was responsive, and my replacement is finally on the way, but next time I will save the hassle and buy a new unit. The savings just didn't outweigh the hassle of having to return the product, and waiting for another. On the plus side the unit was easy enough to use, and will record an entire 6 hr VHS onto a single DVD, once I figured out how to change the recording speed. (one touch on the remote) Good luck with this unit, I hope my replacement is issue free.
I purchased the Toshiba DVR610 Recorder/VCR Combo to dub some famiily vhs tapes to dvd. To this point I have dubbed around 14 vhs tape to dvd format. This unit has performed remarkably well. Dubbing is relatively simple. I would recommend that you read the owners manual before you use it and briefly review it as you are using the unit as it can be somewaht complex with some of the features it has. I read reviews on this unit and other brands and this unit had very positive reviews and has proven so far that it lives up to what others are saying about it. I fully expect to take advantage of some of the many features of this recorder and player as I use it more and more. I would recommend this unit to anyoune considering purchasing equipment to convert your old vhs tapes to dvd. Additionally this player upconverts to 1080i and has very high quality video and audio output when playing pre-recorded dvds.Read full review
