About this product

Product Information

The Sony DSC-F717 camera has replaced the Sony DSC-F707, becoming the fourth generation of Sony's L shaped digital cameras. The Sony F717 uses the same body, Carl Zeiss 5x optical zoom, and 5 megapixel sensor as the previous versions. Expanded options and added features are the main differences between these generations of cameras. The Sony DSC-F717 camera adds an ISO sensitivity of 800 to the camera. Maximum shutter speed when using Program AE is 1/2000 per second, compared to 1/1000 per second in previous generations. This model allows for five selectable autofocus points. Also added is a Full Auto mode in addition to the Program AE, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Full Manual, and Scene modes. You also have access to additional options for the white balance for fluorescent and tungsten lighting. The USB connectivity is provided via USB 2.0. The accessory shoe is hot, and MPEG clips use MPEG HQX, allowing for an unlimited 16 frames per second. A Multi-Burst mode can be found in the movie mode. Included storage is a 32 MB memory stick to store a large amount of photos and videos. Additional features include a short shutter lag, fast startup time, autofocus, and advanced All White Balance. The 1/2000 shutter speed can be a helpful feature with certain modes and apertures. For example, you can select 1/2000 per second in Auto Exposure and Program AE modes. The 1/2000 second speed will work in the Aperture Priority mode if the aperture is F5.6 or smaller. The reason behind this is a combined shutter/aperture iris mechanism, allowing the camera to shoot faster the smaller the aperture. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC F717 uses a CCD optical sensor and has a 2x digital zoom. It records video in MPEG-1 format and images in JPEG and TIFF formats. In addition to the USB port, the Sony DSC F717 has component video connectivity. The flash is a pop up feature with a range of 1 foot to 15 feet. It has a red eye reduction feature as well as plus and minus flash compensation. Along with AP, automatic, program, manual, and shutter priority, it also offers landscape, twilight, portrait, and twilight portrait mode shooting programs. Available special effects include negative art, black and white, solarization, and sepia. The lens aperture ranges from f/2.0 to f/2.4. It has a minimal focal length of 9.7 mm and a maximum of 48.5 mm. This makes the focal length equal to that of 125 feet in a 35 mm camera. The minimal focus distance is 1.6 feet with a macro range of 8 inches to 20 inches. The lens takes a 58 mm filter. You have the option of both automatic and manual focus for your photography, and you can also choose between motorized and manual zoom. This Sony digital camera has a continuous shooting speed of 2 frames per second. There is a 10 second self-timer delay. Other features include built-in speakers, a microphone for audio in your movies, optional date and time stamp, auto power save, and digital noise reduction. Included in the package from Sony is a rechargeable lithium ion battery.

    Excellent optics

The most outstanding feature, of this camera, is the Carl Zeiss Lens. i shoot a lot of portraits. i have compared the image from this camera vs Nikon (which i own) and others ....to me the image quality is excellent. It takes very good night shots, in the simple program mode. You can also do video. The newer cameras, have more advanced features. More megapixels, and a greater capacity for memory. Trust me , Image vs image, this camera will go up against, any them. if it does not beat them outright,( which i am betting, that it will), it would compare, very favorably.

  • Versatile, full-featured, easy to use workhorse

Sony did not disappoint with this unit. I took a lot of pictures with this: candids, scenery, performances, panoramas, eBay, events and more. I always walked away with lots of good photos. The most distinctive and useful feature is the unique barrel lens that rotates up and down. This is great for candids. When you're looking down at the camera, you can point the lens forward or to the side and sneak pictures of camera-shy people. If you like to get down to a child's eyelevel, you don't have to kneel down to get the shot. If you like to photograph that dog or cat lying on the ground, or you're following it around, you can get great pictures at their level without so much exertion. I'm now using a Digital SLR with the tiny viewfinder that makes me do all of the bending down. How I miss ...

  • A Different View

There are at least hundreds of new digital cameras of all types on the market right now, with every possible bell & whistle among them, not to mention megapixels galore. So why did I buy an older Sony F717 when I already have an Olympus E-410 dSLR? One word: infrared. The F717 was a fairly high-end camera at its introduction, with a Carl Zeiss lens, multiple shooting modes, the ability to save images in either JPEG or TIFF format, and a unique body style that lets you work from pretty much any angle. And 5 megapixels was nothing to sneeze at. By today's standards, though, it's entry level, and many cameras have excellent optics and movable screens to allow shooting at odd angles. It's the infrared, or IR, that makes this camera still stand out. In Nightshot mode, ...

  • Good camera for people who like "Gadgets" :-)

I've had this camera for several years - there are some 'better' cameras out there these days, but if you can pick up one of these for a good price, it might serve you well. Here are some random things about the camera: It can use the Sony memory stick *pro* (as opposed to the previous f707 model). The pro is faster, and can go to larger sized (non-pro is limited to 128Mb). The lens swivels from the body, which allows you to easily take pictures from interesting angles (high & low). The battery lasts about 2 hours, and tells you exactly how many minutes are left (that's the 'info' part of the 'info-lithium'). You can attach filters & extra lenses to the 58mm threads. The infra-red night-vision mode is pretty neat :) The macro mode works pretty well for extreme close-ups of insects, ...

  • Sony DSC-F707 & F717 camera's

For taking pictures I really like the F707 & F717 Sony DSC camera's. I purchased my first 707 at a closeout price at one of the big box stores. I enjoyed the ease of use, easy controls, close to where your finger was holding the camera and the joystick is so easy to use. I have purchased 2 others since, both on eBay. Once came as almost new with lots of extra attachments. The 2nd one I was lied to about how it worked. The 707s after having a long life with being used and picked up everyday start losing contact with the memory stick and it just got worse instead of better. I have not been able to find anyone except sony to work on them and when you get their bill, you may as well have bought a new one. I purchased a 717 and have been very happy with it. The same Carl Zeiss lens and ...
